Previous reports have indicated that Todd Phillips' Joker sequel is going to be a musical, and while composer Hildur Guðnadóttir doesn't outright confirm this, she does offer a pretty telling update...

The trades mentioned that Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, Folie à Deux, would feature musical numbers back when the movie was officially announced, and recent set videos spotlighted Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn dancing down the first film's familiar steps while singing a few lines from Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz's "That's Entertainment."

Even so, we still haven't received official confirmation that Joker 2 is going to be a full on musical.

While speaking to ComicBook.com during the A Haunting in Venice press junket, Joker: Folie à Deux composer Hildur Guðnadóttir - who nabbed an Oscar for the first movie's stunning score at the 92nd Academy Awards - was asked about those early reports, and while she declined to confirm anything outright, her response was very telling.

"All I can say is there is going to be a lot of music," Guðnadóttir offered. "That's all I can give away."

While some fans are a little resistant to the idea of a follow-up to Phillips' dark psychological thriller being a musical, others have embraced the concept. We're still not sure exactly how these songs will be implemented into the story, but rumor has it that the narrative will be split between Harley  and Arthur Fleck's (Joaquin Phoenix) skewed perspectives, so there's a chance the musical numbers will simply be part of the characters' delusions (Fleck imagined his entire relationship with Sofie Dummond in the first film, after all).

Whatever form the songs take, we have heard that the soundtrack will be "heavily inspired" by classic Liza Minelli musicals such as Cabaret, New York, New York, and That's Entertainment. This isn't really too surprising, since Lady Gaga is a big Minelli fan.

We still don't know if the pop megastar is actually writing the soundtrack, but we'd say there's a decent chance she'll pen at least one song for the movie.

In addition to Phoenix and Gaga, Joker 2 will see the return of Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, along with new cast members Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey in undisclosed roles.

The Joker sequel won't take place in the same world as the main DCU, and will be known as an "Elseworlds" project, along with Matt Reeves' The Batman movies, J.J. Abrams' Superman film, and Constantine 2 (if they happen).

Joker: Folie à deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.

It will be Interesting to see how Gunn promotes this and Reeves Batman. 😅🤣

Probably will be slyly salty about their existence.
Th3Batman - 9/2/2023, 6:57 AM
@TheClunges - I think both of these will be promoted by WB, not DC Studios.
AquaClunge - 9/2/2023, 7:26 AM
@Th3Batman - true, but this guy confuses me lol...he went out of his way to promote the Flash which had a lot of marketing money behind it but then hardly promoted Blue Beetle which was a better film and needed more help with its promotion.

So I wanna se what he does when it comes to the films he can't touch 🤔
TheHumanSpider2 - 9/2/2023, 8:53 AM
@TheClunges - "Joker is launching the DCU"
bobevanz - 9/2/2023, 9:04 AM
@TheClunges - it's damage control, he knew Flash was mid and Blue Beetle is a new character to movies, they didn't bank on those being successful but you can hype them into making them profitable.. most of the time. Joker 2 will make bank and win awards, they don't even have to hype it at all if need be lol
bobevanz - 9/2/2023, 9:05 AM
Also I hate to say it, but the mindless Snyder cult was inflating all of those DC movies with box office number. They mindlessly watched everything until after ZSJL, then they turned their backs and somehow it shows. Once the cult backs down, you lose money orrrr barely break even (Marvel)
AquaClunge - 9/2/2023, 1:17 PM
@bobevanz - you're probably right about the cult but I think there was some genuine interest from the GA too. Now both are gone leaving DC films to flop like a mf💀💀
dagenspear - 9/8/2023, 3:46 PM
@bobevanz - LORD willing.
GarthRanzz - 9/2/2023, 8:47 AM
One of only 2 comic book movies I am truly excited for.
kingruggid - 9/2/2023, 5:24 PM
@GarthRanzz - lmao... Really?????
GarthRanzz - 9/2/2023, 8:44 PM
@kingruggid - Yeah the other is The Batman 2. Marvel hasnt been good as of late. Fox is done. Sony having the next Spiderverse movie seems so far away. Gunn doesnt inspire confidence.
TheHumanSpider2 - 9/2/2023, 8:53 AM
Really liked the first movie, but I hate musical...this can either be a masterpiece, or a complete disaster.
bobevanz - 9/2/2023, 9:07 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - La La Land is technically a musical, but the second and third act is more of a drama. There's a fine line and so far, it was the only movie to do so. I also hate musicals lol Hamilton is trash!
Shivermetimbers - 9/2/2023, 9:17 AM
This is terrible news. The Joker 2 was one of the comic movies I was most anticipating, hoping the musical aspect was being over reported. I hate HATE musicals though, so I might have to skip this.
ThorArms - 9/2/2023, 11:04 AM
Zero interest in this
LenSkivorskiJr - 9/2/2023, 11:18 AM
Another Batman movie without Robin 𝒐𝒓 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒏 AND a Harley Quinn that isn’t Ms. Robbie?

Tim Dillon better have a musical number in this!
SuperCat - 9/2/2023, 12:46 PM
Nolanite - 9/2/2023, 1:28 PM
Of course there will be.
Background music, live music, music from the score, the songs playing during the credits and post credits, and so forth.
Idiots taking nothing and making it into something with no sense.
Nolanite out.
dagenspear - 9/8/2023, 3:44 PM
@Nolanite - LORD willing, insulting isn't right.
Nolanite - 9/8/2023, 4:08 PM
@dagenspear - lord? Which lord?
Lord of the flies? Lord of the rings?
Lord Sebastian of the east?
There are plenty of willing lords.
Non-Lord Nolanite out.

WhatIfRickJames - 9/2/2023, 3:05 PM
I normally don’t like musicals but I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to be bonkers
kingruggid - 9/2/2023, 5:23 PM
WB and their DC properties are now uninvestable gross echos of what it could or should be. A Joker musical is just a lame money grab that is going to fail, mark these words, WB have no idea what their doing over there period.
dagenspear - 9/8/2023, 3:44 PM
@kingruggid - What WOULDN'T BE a lame moneygrab?
JayLemle - 9/2/2023, 7:18 PM
I don't do musicals. But, I should probably watch some of the ones that did very well over the last 23 years, or so (the one with the Christina Aguilera song, and the other with Richard Gere). That might help me be able to stomach Joker 2.
Timerider - 9/2/2023, 7:33 PM
You know what’s funny, Joaquin Phoenix was in Superboy, that boy grew up to be the Joker.

I wonder what Lady Gaga will dance to going down the stairs, probably one of her songs.
oliverttom - 9/3/2023, 10:14 AM
Can't shake the feeling this is gonna be so dire! Love Joker, can't stand Gaga..def one I'll be avoiding.
sully - 9/3/2023, 1:47 PM
I just can't get excited for this movie. The rumors of this film being a musical in any aspect just seems like they're changing the formula for something that was already successful. Why change what worked? Seems idiotic. The one and only time any musical number would be acceptable is if Arthur was having intermittent delusions.
