Paul Thomas Anderson Shares His Opinion Of Christopher Nolan's BATMAN Trilogy

Currently Paul Thomas Anderson is garnering a lot of well deserved praise for his latest film The Master, which has been praised by critics and moviegoers alike. Anderson has always been at the top of my list when it comes to directors that I'd like to see takeover the Batman franchise after Christopher Nolan so I am especially interested in his thoughts on Nolan's trilogy and his interest in blockbusters in general.

I’ve never really been asked to do [big tentpole blockbusters]. You look at what Christopher Nolan did with Batman, that’s like the meeting of the highest level of artistic skill & a kind of commerciality and appeal to a wide range of people which is what anybody would want. It’s kind of unparalleled actually, and they don’t come to me with those. And that’s alright.

Seems almost criminal that someone as talented as Anderson hasn't been offered a comic book movie, let alone any tentpole films thus far. I still think Warner Bros., a company that doesn't have a reputation of being cheap with directors, like Marvel, will make Anderson a sizable offer. They were able to woo Chris Nolan from the land of Indie films so they could do the same with Anderson.

The Dark Knight Rises will be available on DVD and Blu-ray December 4th. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

Saw him on the Daily Show a few weeks ago. Seems like a genuinely nice guy. Only seen Punch Drunk Love but they say his movies are generally fantastic. Nice to see him showing an appreciation for blockbusters.

He could make a pretty interesting CBM. On the top of my head, I'd like to see him make a proper Extraordinary Gentlemen

Well, if you want a Batman with more action than incredible acting, you won't want P.T. Anderson.

Imagine PTA for a Hellblazer remake? I didn't mind the original, Constantine, with Keanu Reeves because it had some genuinely entertaining scenes and moments throughout it. A remake to that would be so up his alley, especially considering There Will Be Blood and the performance he helped Daniel Day Lewis deliver. I think that would be fun.

I wonder if people are gonna start talking shit about him because he liked Nolan's Batman movies.

PTA is one of my all time favorite directors. I loved the Master and There Will Be Blood. But I don't think a CBM or a tent-pole movie would be a good fit for him. I think he's fine making independent movies.

Keep doing your dramas. Personally, I like comic book films being made by people who don't look down on the source material.

The Master may be a great movie but the preview was so terrible and conveyed nothing of what it was about that I had absolutely no interest in seeing it

@AlienVersusPredator

Are you kidding? Lots of people speak ill of each other in the film industry. Terry Gilliam is known for his public dislike of Steven Spielberg's films. Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg and Jane Campion have all publicly noted their dislike of Nolan's Batman films. Sigourney Weaver trashed Kathryn Bigelow and her Oscar win for The Hurt Locker, saying that the only reason James Cameron didn't win is because he "didn't have a pair of breasts." Just a week ago everyone was making a big deal out of Wally Pfister trashing The Avengers and it's cinematography in particular.

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Yeah sure. Marvels cheap on the directors and WB isn't. That's why Marvels track record is so much better than WB's right? WB has ONE good franchise. Marvel has multiple. WB did Green Lantern. Nuff said.

I'm not doing the Marvel Dc war crap. I like both. But that was kind of an unwarranted low low by Nail. I don't think this guy should touch superhero movies btw. Show me one action oriented film he's made. Or even a film that shows an inkling of capability to do good action pieces. That is kind of a prerequisite. Just cuz the guy makes good movies doesn't mean he should make comic book movies. That's like saying Wes Anderson should direct Ant Man.

Lol. It's up there with LOTR and Godfather? Really?

I LOVE the first two. They are two of the best cbm's ever made. Dark Knight probably is the best cbm ever made. Avengers is my favorite because its way more fun, and I think cbm's should be fun. But Rises, tho it was a good film by its own merits, is a plot hole riddled heap of a mess, with a ton of silly film making decisions that should of never been made. This franchise is considerably under the level of LOTR, and it only comes close to Godfather in the sense that the first two are amazing and third one...not so much.

Dark Knight was a great film. Batman Begins was a good film. TDKR was an utter bore and that made me sad . The DKR is one of the most artistic and best cbm made but to compare it to the LOTR triology and Godfather makes you sound ridiculous. And now I will ignore everything you say from here on out.

@TheYoungMan: because the MCU movies have no atristic and philosophical ambition. they're meant to be a product of mass consumption and that's fine and tey're very good at it. Ain't citizen kane though.

This is one of the best scenes of the 90's. Up there with the overdose in Pulp Fiction, and the dream sequence in The Big Lebowski.

its great , sam mendes said that quite recently about the TDK, the guys in total recall wanted to be compared to it too, there are other people as well who now realise that this is the standard. The MCU movies are fun and i watch and will continue to support all of them too. But you have to admit that the batman trilogy (particularly the first two) were a cut above anything else. What was fantastic was that we got a movie that showcased comic book as a serious medium to tell credible compelling stories, even if you arent a comic book fan you have to respect what they brought. The marvel films are fun to watch like all disney movies.

That REALLY tells you something when a guy of his stature and talent says that about the Dark Knight Trilogy and Christopher Nolans work.

It is strange. I do not hear a lot of A-list directors singing the praises of Joss Wheedon..

precisely! I keep using this term, but the MCU is cream dream! THat;s a good thing! THey are trying with all their heart to breathe life into comic book panels in a manner that's not so up front as say 300 or Sin City. The Nolan trilogy is something different entirely, hence my ire towards the comparisons of two films I wanted nothing but to embrace.

There's nothing in Anderson's filmography that suggests that he could or would do a successful comic book based film. I could see him taking on an adaptation of a non-superhero property, like "Road to Perdition" or "History of Violence," but I don't see him doing, say, Batman.
DrRockso

I don't think we will see anything remotely comparable to what Nolan accomplished in our lifetime. We are so lucky to have had what we've had between him and Whedon.

For fun, PTA doing Daredevil. :D All the old twinkies eyeballing Murdock at the bar thinking he can't sense itl. :D Who else would be histerically done with PTA's genius sensibilities? :-P It's okay throw some out there. Alpha Flight?

If PTA did a comic book film, no one would like it. He'd put so much of a signature on it that the only way it would work would be a perfect sync. I'm contemplating. Who would you think, if any, could be PTA's comicbookmovie perfect mashup? Come on guys, chime in; this is fun!
