Colin Farrell Officially Signs On To Reprise Penguin Role For THE BATMAN HBO Max Spinoff

It was recently announced that a The Batman spinoff show focusing on the early criminal career of The Penguin is in the works for HBO Max, and Colin Farrell has now signed on to reprise the role.

We got word a few months back that a Penguin series is in the early stages of development for HBO Max, and Colin Farrell has now officially signed on to reprise the role. The In Bruges actor will make his debut as a new interpretation of the classic DC Comics villain in Matt Reeves' The Batman next March.

The show, which is described as a "Scarface-like series about the rise of the Penguin character" that will delve into his ascension to power in the Gotham criminal underworld, is set to be executive produced by The Batman duo Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves.

The Penguin, aka Oswald Cobbelpot, is one of The Dark Knight's best-known foes and has been depicted in live-action several times over the years, with Burgess Meredith bringing arguably the most iconic interpretation of the character to life in the '60s Batman TV series, and Danny DeVito playing a more grotesque incarnation in Tim Burton's Batman Returns. More recently, Robin Lord Taylor starred as Cobblepot in Fox's Gotham.

The Penguin series joins Joe Barton's still untitled GCPD show, which is also set before the events of The Batman and is expected to "extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad complex characters of Gotham."

The Penguin seems like an odd character to get his own spinoff (especially with so many Bat-related villains yet to receive the spotlight), but Warner Bros. is clearly confident that fans will want to see more of Farrell's take on the crime boss after The Batman

@manofillintent1

We’re getting a Matt Reeves Bat-Universe, for better or worse.

I’m excited about it, I think there’s a lot of shit you can do in Gotham. But dilution of product is absolutely a concern.

@KWilly - lol Colin could act circles around Robin. Also; Gotham was pure cringe with the worst dialogue ever.

Is this "Batman spinoff" in "active development" Like the green lantern series,Gotham Sirens and Harley vs Joker?

I love seeing people gripe about this, meanwhile Marvel just announced a show about Echo, who literally no one heard of until five seconds ago, and Agatha Harkness. I think at this point we can assume anything and everything is on the table from now until the time the earth decides to just hurtle itself into the sun.

No idea why people are so against this. Gotham wasn’t exactly amazing. Very much so alright. On top of that Batman’s biggest strength has always been the world building which a trilogy of films doesn’t do as well as you’d want it too. A whole bunch of characters getting development in shows works.

I wonder what is their thought process to greenlit prequel spin-offs from the movie so early.

I’m torn on this. On the one hand I really like what I’ve seen from this movie so I’m a little excited but at the same time WB really needs to chil with this greenlighting everything before the audience has seen the first project. They did it with Snyder (which to be fair I enjoyed but most people didn’t do it counts) they have been doing it with Gunn and it’s already getting old, and now they are doing it with Reeves. Maybe just focus on making a good thing and let people see it and decide they like it before giving over the keys to the kingdom to anyone who gives you a good pitch.

I think the possibilities are endless, and it's Matt Reeves so I get it, but WB keeps greenlighting things before anyone decides they want more of it.

People is against cause DC is over the place with Batman, they have the Snyderverse Gotham, Batwoman's Gotham, Titans Gotham, Reeves Gotham,Flash/Burton's Gotham Joker's Gotham 🙃

I mean, still feels strange having Colin Farrell in the role.
Actually quite like him as an actor (In Bruges is a great movie) but it just feels like...if your just gonna cake him in prosthetics and have him act against type, then why not just cast someone cheaper 😂😂
Wouldn't mind a Ray Winstone Penquin meself.

I...guess. But as someone else pointed out above, every body was cool with random Echo and Harkness tv shows from Marvel, so why not? Got to feed the ever growing content machine.
