THE BATMAN 2 Finally Moving Forward As PROJECT POWER's Mattson Tomlin Joins Matt Reeves As Co-Writer

Deadline reports that The Batman director Matt Reeves has signed an overall first-look film deal with Warner Bros. Now, the filmmaker will call that studio home, which makes perfect sense when he's so deeply involved with the Caped Crusader's franchise on the big and small screens.

"Making this legendary studio my home is a dream," Reeves said in a statement today. "I am so excited to be working with Mike [De Luca], Pam [Abdy], and Channing [Dungey] and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen."

The trade also confirms that, as part of this deal, Reeves is currently penning The Batman sequel with Project Power scribe Mattson Tomlin. He actually worked on the first movie, though didn't receive a credit for his contributions. Among the other upcoming DC projects Reeves is currently working on are The Penguin TV series starring Colin Farrell and a show set in Arkham Asylum.

This deal has been put together under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's watch, so, while he may have scrapped Batgirl, it appears The Batman franchise is safe.

De Luca says, "Keeping Matt and creating a home for him to do more projects in the Batman universe but also originals, was very important to us." Dungey, meanwhile, adds: "We look forward to continuing our partnership with the wonderful 6th & Idaho team and expanding the world Matt so artfully created with The Batman film through our upcoming series The Penguin."

If Reeves has only just started writing The Batman 2, chances are we aren't going to be watching the sequel on the big screen this side of 2025. There's a chance it could be released in 2024, but even that seems a tad optimistic. However, we're just glad that Robert Pattinson's time as the Dark Knight hasn't reached a premature end.

What are your hopes for The Batman franchise moving forward?

I have a few issues with The Batman but it was overall pretty good. Make things a little tighter, and a little more for the villain to do and I'll be satisfied.

@ThorArms - The Batman reminded me a lot of Batman Begins, in that is was decent but opens up the door for a kickass sequel🤞

@UncleHarm1 - Batman Begins is way better than The Batman. I don’t have too much faith in the sequel.

@Humperdoo - Tha Batman was definitely pretty bloated, there's a good 2hr movie in there somewhere

@UncleHarm1 - I actually think the opposite: The Batman would’ve benefitted from being a series. Double the running time (6 one hour episodes) and flesh out the story and characterizations a bit more. Make a real investigative procedural that takes its time with the details while deep diving into the characters’ relationships, etc. Drop a cliffhanger at the end of each episode and you crank up the forward momentum.

@HarryBloodscreaming - That would be better definitely. Either way, too much going on for one movie but glad they didn't pull a WB and do their own monstrosity of a cut

@UncleHarm1 - I agree.

Steadily introduce some more fantastical elements. We’ve seen enough grounded Batman.

Awesome. I hope they do an antagonist that relies a little more on the sci-fi aspect this time.

I bet the flow of this film will drastically different than the first.

People let it slide because it was Batman's latest outing. This movie made very little noise. It's like it didn't even come out. Betting Discovery chooses not to double down on Reeves' flair but go another direction without ruining what was created in the first.

In other words part will lean more towards a traditional Batman. Betting it tones down the noir vibe a hair and picks up the pace a bit.

My oldest bro is the biggest Batman fan of all time and he has yet to see this movie

@DCasAhobby - I'd say it made some pretty decent noise considering it was a completely fresh start to batman with no ties to any already existing franchise.

@DCasAhobby - It made quite a bit of noise and still regularly trends on Twitter.

@DCasAhobby - hates the new take of a film he hasn't seen? Pretty sure any Batman fan would watch a new Batman film, regardless of what they heard of it. And it's pretty damn good.
