The Batman introduces new takes on several key villains and supporting players from the source material, including The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin and Jim Gordon, but if Matt Reeves gets the opportunity to helm a sequel, which other DC Comics character would he most like to see join them?
The director was asked that very question during a Twitter Q&A, and while he admitted that there are countless possibilities, he settled on Hush. "There are so many, and, I dunno... I think Hush is a really interesting one to do. I'll say Hush. But that doesn't mean that the next one will be Hush!"
Reeves stresses that sequel plans are in the very early stages, and while he has a lot of ideas for how to continue The Dark Knight's journey, Hush won't necessarily factor into the story.
Spoilers follow
If you've seen The Batman, you'll likely have noticed that the groundwork is actually laid for the introduction of Hush, aka Dr. Thomas Elliot. At one point, The Riddler exposes some dark secrets, revealing that Thomas Wayne played a part in the death of a journalist named Edward Elliot. While this could just be a coincidence, the word "hush" even flashes up on the screen at one point.
This may not mean very much, but given Reeves' fondness for the character, we wouldn't be surprised to see Hush track down his childhood friend in an attempt to take revenge for the death of his father in the next movie.
