THE BATMAN Star Robert Pattinson Teases His Less "Straight-Up Heroic" Take On The Dark Knight

The trailers for The Batman showed a pretty brutal incarnation of the iconic DC Comics vigilante in action, and star Robert Pattinson has now teased a less heroic take on The Dark Knight.

The first trailer for The Batman gave us a good indication that this latest incarnation of the Dark Knight won't be holding back when it comes to dealing with criminals, and everything we've seen from Matt Reeves' upcoming reboot since has suggested that we're in for a fairly brutal take (well, as brutal as a PG-13 rating allows) on the iconic DC Comics vigilante.

Robert Pattinson has previously implied that his Batman will head down a pretty dark route in the movie, and the actor has now teased a less heroic interpretation of the character than fans might be used to.

“I needed to know about as much of the history of the character as possible to see what hadn’t really been done," he revealed during an interview with The Daily Record. "People see Batman as this straight-up heroic character, but in our story it really questions what the nature of a hero is and it gives a lot of different angles to it.”

Ben Affleck's Batman was a pretty violent fella, to be fair, but many assumed Warner Bros. would go with a slightly less intense version of the character in order to differentiate Reeves' film from the "SnyderVerse" era movies. Evidently not!

We're not expecting Pattinson's Caped Crusader to fully break bad, of course, but it sounds like he might go to some extreme places in his efforts to bring The Riddler to justice.

I'm liking this unhinged Batman. It's a nice change of pace for what's usually portrayed for the character.

As long as he isn’t an ANTI hero and doesn’t kill, I‘m good. That was basically my biggest critique of batfleck

I hope they focused more on the plot and story than to make this movie different than the others. It feels like every interview is about how they made some aspect of the movie different than the others.

I think unhinged Batman is going to be due to him being Batman for vengeance (he even says it in the trailer) and not justice.

He's not out stopping criminals just because they're doing something illegal. He wants to make them all pay for his parents' deaths. He wants to make them hurt.

I think he'll eventually become a more heroic version of the character down the line. But this seems to be his mindset in year 2 as Batman.

Totally fine with this. Especially with Reeves behind the camera. The way he handled Caesar's character arc in thr Planet of the Apes movies was damn near perfect and I can't wait to see what he does with Batman.

I know some are worried about it being another "grounded" version of Batman and his villains. But the dude made an ape riding a horse while shooting a machine guy look cool. So I'm sure in the sequels Reeves could still find a way to make characters like Mr Freeze or Clayface work in this Batman world.

Robert Pattinson's opinion on Batman kinda annoys me. Like why he thinks this guy is an anti-hero is beyond me.

He's just as heroic as Spider-Man or Superman, he's just grumpy and paranoid.

@KWilly - And he hates people calling Batman a superhero… he is a superhero Pattinson, so is Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, Green Arrow etc…

@KWilly - Lmao this is straight up wrong. No he isn't. Superman and spiderman don't straight up torture people at certain points. They don't manuplate and have counter measures on their friends. Strange take.

Batman IS A HERO. I think the motivation to be vengeance makes him seem anti-hero like but anti-heroes take SHORTCUTS. Why be patient? Why build a case? Why not just use the same methods the villains would use on you?

Most anti-heroes are written in such a way as to justify fighting fire with fire, something Batman is actually against. This is because Batman, at his core, is extremely compassionate. It’s the fact that he doesn’t cross those lines despite wanting to that makes him a hero we can look up to.

Just because he’s more flare and morose than most superheroes doesn’t mean that through the bitter anger he isn’t doing this mostly because he doesn’t want another kid to end up like he did.

@BlackBeltJones - I think your outline still fits. Year 2. Hero-in-training. if we get a full trilogy - a complete path - circle closed.

I'm going to wait till it comes out to judge Pattinson's take, but...my spidey senses are telling me this is not going to be any closer to a definitive Batman.

I think we’re all splitting hairs here.

As long at he doesn’t straight up kill people then he’s still Batman (from silver age an upwards).

If he did kill, that would be going back to the golden age, I believe. Or perhaps just his first appearances.

Visually, Batman has been interpreted so many ways. And I like most of them! However, remaining consistent with the No Killing rule has been shaky. If we can get an unhinged Batman that still adheres to that rule, great. The No Killing rule is sort of a big deal when it comes to the character. I’ve forgiven it so many times before, it would be nice to see it adhered to again.
