THE BATMAN: There Are Reportedly No Plans To Make Robert Pattinson The DCU's Dark Knight Despite 2027 Delay

Despite the news that Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel has been hit with a year-long delay, this development reportedly has nothing to do with Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader joining the DCU.

Earlier today, we got the disappointing news that Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel - which is no longer officially titled "The Batman - Part II" - has been hit with a major delay, and now won't arrive in theaters until October 1, 2027.

Despite DC Studios co-head James Gunn taking to social media to state that the delay was simply down to the fact that the script hasn't been finished, speculation mounted that some recent rumors relating to Gunn wanting to bring star Robert Pattinson in as the DCU's Dark Knight might be the real reason.

On last week's episode of The Hot Mic, co-host Jeff Sneider shared some of the things he's heard about the Batman situation, and he believes that Gunn does indeed want Pattinson in the DCU - but Reeves is "resistant" to the idea.

Whether there is any truth to this or not, Daniel Richtman has heard that, for now, there are "still no plans to make Pattinson the DCU Batman."

Things could always change on this front, but let's assume that Gunn and co. still fully intend to cast a new Batman for The Brave and the Bold, what is taking so long with The Batman sequel's script?

We have heard that some kind of personal issues might be involved. We're not sure if this means problems between Reeves and someone at the studio or in his home life, but we'll just say that the rumor mill has been churning.

At this point, folding the Batverse into the DCU might make the most sense, if for no other reason than to avoid having two separate Batman franchises running alongside each other. By the time The Batman sequel actually hits theaters in 2027, there's sure to have been at least some progress on The Brave and The Bold, although director Andy Muschietti did reveal that the project has been "postponed a little bit" earlier today.

Gunn has previously admitted that he did consider bringing Pattinson on as the DCU's Dark Knight.

"I've contemplated it, yeah. I contemplate everything and talk about everything," the filmmaker said in a recent interview. "I'm committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories. We want to be able to tell a story where Superman is very different or tell a Red Sun story or whatever. We want to be able to play with these characters in different ways."

"One of the things I love about DC over Marvel comic books is those things are much more plentiful," he added. "There are many more Elseworlds stories. I think that's part of the fun of DC."

What do you think? Would you like to see Pattinson as the DCU's Batman? Drop us a comment down below.

I have been a big fan of Reeves take on these characters thus far but I still don’t think that stylized yet grounded universe fits in with the DCU we have seen as of now.

Let Matt have his version for now as well as the DCU which will likely be more comic book-y anyway which is good since it will give variety…

I think the audience is smart enough to understand that would be two seperate iterations of Batman & his world.

For [frick]s sake, just make Robert the DCU Batman, and let Reeves deal with it. Why do these [frick]ing WB heads always make things so complicated? You have a chance to make a difference but you always find a was to [frick] it up

@THEKENDOMAN - What are you suggesting they do? Force Reeves to make a creative choice that he doesn't want to?

THEKENDOMAN - 12/28/2024, 8:40 AM
@Nightwing1015 - My man, it's been a while.
I suggest that they stop making it complicated and sit down with Reeves and see how they can bring Robert and his Batverse into the DCU. I've been in support of Elseworlds, but come on if they can focus on one Universe, and keep the same story through Film, TV, and Video games, I believe that will be fun to watch, the tone can change but the story remains connected. And it's quite obvious
they are having problems with the direction, that's because it is all complicated and rushed. I mean do we really need two Batman or a white and black Superman? I honestly believe to avoid chaos start somewhere and build from there.

@MCUKnight11 - agreed

To integrate Pattinson’s version into the DCU , they would have to change the entire premise they already announced which I don’t see happening.

idk they say that, but there's actual news about the development of the project actively happening and it recently had a successful spin-off in the form of "The Penguin".

Plus the likeness of Batman in the Creature Commandos ep looked like it had The Patman's collar

Ahhh gotcha. It was at least fun to theorize it. lol It's just odd that we got two postponed announcements for two different Batman projects, with a Clayface film being produced by Reeves and A canceled DCU related Arkham Asylum series by Reeves. 🤷🏾‍♂️

The honesty is that the story of Brave and the Bold just sucks and the Morrison run was pretty average. A Batman Hush, Under the Red Hood or even Court of Owls film would've been superb. Visually I know Gunn's vision will be amazing for a fantastical Batman, but that's as far as the hype goes for me for now. Still confident in a solid project but there's no denying that Reeves is killing it with his storytelling.

Don’t back down James I’m not buying any reason for the delay just yet but I’m sure Matt realizes they’re sitting on a goldmine if they pull it off. Merging a brand new franchise with a fellow blossoming series? That is some seriously epic shit, not saying it wouldn’t be hard just saying it not that far fetched (example Avengers 2012)

It is early, but it seems crazy to me that Snyder’s DCEU felt more planned out than the current DCU.

I get James Gunn wanting quality, that’s cool, but right now it seems scatter fire. I like the DCU starting with heroes already established, but I still feel like we should be starting with the trinity and then branching going out.
Asterisk
Asterisk - 12/27/2024, 11:44 PM
@Knightrider - I think not starting with the whole trinity is the right choice. They rushed them out of the gate last time and the audience couldn’t connect to them. They need to give all the heroes room to breathe. Mixing in a Superman movie right next to a Clayface smaller budget horror movie is the absolutely the smart way to go. Build out your universe in large and small increments.

Imagine if the MCU had started with Spider-Man, Hulk, and Wolverine films as Phase 1. Maybe it would’ve been good idk but there wouldn’t have been the push to explore lesser known characters

If he joined Gunn's slapstick world it would ruin that Batman franchise. The Batman is currently the fourth best Batman film ever made. We would be going back to Schumacher level Batman nonsense!

Where does the belief that they'd fold Reeves' Batman into the DCU come from ?

Is it purely speculation ? Is it just people thinking "there's no way they'll have TWO Batmen on screen, they HAVE to use the one that's already there !" ? Having one Batman for the cinematic universe stuff and one Elseworlds Batman isn't that confusing. People understand different iterations.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 12/28/2024, 12:00 AM
I honestly hope they don’t change The Brave and The Bold premise since I like Damian personally.

However aside from Grant Morrison , I hope they take some inspiration from the Peter Tomasi run too since I liked what I read of it aswell.

You could even use Morgan Ducard/Nobody as the villain though that likely won’t work in the first film given his storyline of thinking Batman’s too soft on crime and trying to lure Damian to his side.

Nearly 6 years between sequels is insane. I understand wanting to get the script right, but if it's taking this long, maybe it would've been better to go with another story.

NodrickStripson - 12/28/2024, 5:33 AM
@TheJok3r -

Alien (1979)
Aliens (1986)
Alien3 (1992)

The Terminator (1984)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Silence of the Lambs (1990)
Hannibal (2001)

The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather Part II (1974)
The Godfather Part III (1990)

Taking time between sequels is not insane.
discounting “legacy sequels“, it used to be the norm for filmmakers to actually take time to think about where they wanted a story to go.

These days people are used to the Marvel approach of having multiple films in production at the same time leading to a production line of sequels with varying results in terms of quality.

@TheJok3r - If a treatment for a trilogy was already in place and Reeves went straight from the first into the sequel then a late ‘24 early/mid ‘25 would’ve easily been achievable.

@NodrickStripson - If Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Sonic and a whole bunch of others can get a hang of a good pacing with developing a script and shooting it there is no excuse for something like this to delay so much. Punctuality is important when you set out a date.

I’d rather Reeves Batman be grounded in a separate universe and Gunns Batman should be more comic book like. Since Gunn is going all in on Superman being more comic book like he should do the same for Batman. 🤷‍♂️
