THE BATMAN Will Reportedly Feature At Least Four Of The Dark Knight's Villains

Ben Affleck may not be our Caped Crusader anymore but The Batman is still happening, and a couple of new reports claim to shed some light on how many villains we'll end up seeing in the DC Comics movie!

Despite the fact that Ben Affleck has stepped down as the DCEU's Dark Knight, Matt Reeves remains hard at work on his movie and is currently attempting to find a brand new lead for The Batman.

Recently, we've been hearing a lot about the film featuring multiple villains, and Forbes' Mark Hughes has now doubled down on that by Tweeting, "The Batman
is peppered w/multiple villains, not just 1 or 2...I know a/b 3 of them for sure + there are others filling in Gotham's population in cameos/supporting roles."

It's been widely reported that The Penguin will be making an appearance, and Batman On Film lends some weight to this by claiming that "There are at least 4" bad guys in the movie.

A lot of superhero movies have struggled with more than one villain, so it will be interesting to see how Reeves handles four. Some will more than likely have only very minor roles, but then that runs the risk of fans getting upset about their lack of screentime or the way they're used in the larger story.

Regardless, with casting expected to begin soon, we may find out which villains we're getting this year.

I think if you've got a wide overarching crime or conspiracy going, up to four villains could definitely work.

@DnA - I was happy to see this honestly, gives me more faith that they really are following the detective angle, and instead of clues/leads/interrogations etc. involving nondescript mobsters and thugs it will be villains we know

@DillonEnnis @DnA @riel - I believe the premise is based on Batman: The Long Halloween where Batman is hunting a murderer and it retells how he meets most of his rogue gallery. It's known as 1 of Batman's best spin-offs and is up there in the top with Hush, Dark Knight Returns, Gotham by Gaslight, etc. A DC animated movie is already being adapted.

I'm highly looking forward to Matt Reeve's adaptation as with Caesar from Planet of the apes, he knows how to create great characters.

@mastakilla39 - that would make me soooooo happy! Such a good Batman story... dark victory was pretty good... but nowhere near long Halloween

Batman Begins had about 5 or six - each representing a different aspect of Batman/Bruce Wayne. As long as the script and story are good there is no reason why it can't work.

@Orphix - That was the last Batman film that gave us anything new in terms of villains.

I'm growing to love that film more and more, recently.

@GwenLantern - Yep - I love how each villain reflects and conflicts with a certain aspect of Batman. A great villain should allow you to explore the main character. Scarecrow = Use of Fear. Earle = Corporate Wealth. Ducard = Secret Identity, Rha's = Imagery, etc

I would love to see a few that haven't been seen on film before. Hush, Hugo Strange, Firefly, and deathstroke (I know he made a cameo but that doesn't count)

The only thing about dealing with four major villains is dealing with four origins. Could be tricky.

@ElJefe - But we wouldn't have to see the origins of villains like Two-Face or Catwoman because the audience already knows them. That would be a problem if they were all new villains who had never appeared on the big screen.

@ElJefe - Do their origins have to be explained, really? TDK didn't explain Joker's origin. He just is who he is.

Having four villains means you're not specifically focusing on any of them. So you don't need to develop their origins (which is usually done to tie back to the hero). They can just be there, already established bad guys.

Before everyone panics about another Spider-Man 3, keep in mind, we've already been introduced to some of these characters before. They don't have to introduce Two-Face again, just have him be in the film.
