While we know that Ben Affleck is being replaced by a younger actor in
The Batman, it's currently unclear whether or not director Matt Reeves is planning to also switch out J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon) and Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth). It would make sense if he did, but many fans would be disappointed to say goodbye to their takes on the characters.
Something that could lessen the blow, however, is someone like Ralph Fiennes taking over as the Caped Crusader's loyal butler.
Asked during a recent interview if he would be interested in playing Alfred in a live-action setting after voicing him in
The LEGO Batman Movie and
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, he said:
"A lot of good people have gone before me. I'd be happy to follow in their footsteps!" The actor then pointed to the camera and said,
"Put that out there! Alfred!"
It would definitely be fun to see someone like Fiennes take over the role and it's easy to imagine him dishing out advice to an inexperienced Dark Knight. His casting could be a little too on the nose, though, and Reeves no doubt has his own ideas.
