The Dark Knight Rises: Christian Bale's Last Chance to Show What He Can Do

After a solid first attempt, Christian Bale had the second movie stolen from him. Now with his new Oscar, it's time for him to show everyone why he won the role of Batman

So I tuned into the Oscar telecast this past Sunday, expecting the same boring, shameless pandering we've come to expect from the Academy. Well the show ended up being anything but boring but that's a whole different subject, but one thing that made me very happy was Christian Bale walking away with the Best Supporting Actor award. I've been a big fan of Bale's for years, and I thought he definitely deserved the award for the years of solid performances he's been turning in. Now, he's off to his next film, The Dark Knight Rises, and I think going into the third Batman movie with Oscar momentum is the best thing for Christian Bale right now.

Before Batman Begins, I didn't really know much about Christian Bale other than he was best known for American Psycho. After hearing that he had been cast as my favorite comic book hero I immediately started checking out his filmography, and I found myself impressed with how versatile of an actor he was. Just watch Empire of the Sun, it's kind of a boring movie but a young Christian Bale totally owns the movie. Equilibrium was awesome but ridiculous, but it's clear the movie would not have been as good without Bale's performance. Post Begins, Christian Bale gave a criminally underrated performance in The Prestige (in my opinion one of the best of his career) and a few other movies.

Then The Dark Knight hit, a movie that should have been the biggest success of his career, but Bale started getting a bad rep after the movie premiered. First there was the incident with his mom and sister, which was swept away pretty quickly, but then the criticism started over his bat-voice. Soon, Bale's performance as Batman became the butt of many jokes and internet memes. Then, almost a year later, a recording hit the web of Bale getting into a profanity laced tirade against the DP of Terminator Salvation, and the film being a critical and commercial failure didn't help either. Once again, Bale was the subject of internet jokes and remixes. But now, Bale has seemingly redeemed himself by lying low and being on his best behavior, and now the rest of his career is in his hands, especially in the role he will be best known for: Batman.

Earlier tonight, I was sitting around my house bored, and popped in Batman Begins. A few minutes in, I realized that it had been years since the last time I watched this movie, in fact I think the last time I watched it was the night before The Dark Knight hit theaters. Other than being reminded how awesome Batman Begins is, I also realized how much Bale owns this movie. I'm going to say it right now: Batman Begins owes a lot of it's success to Bale's performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Batman Begins is very much Bale's movie from beginning to end, not to say he didn't have help from an amazing supporting cast though. As Bruce Wayne, Bale is sympathetic, bad-ass, intense, charismatic, and just plain compelling as a scarred youth on a mission. After the movie came out, I remember many people saying how they wanted to "be Batman"; one review I read of the movie stated "Finally, the Batman movies have found their Christopher Reeve". When you watch it, Bale just owns every scene he's in because he seems to understand both Batman and Bruce Wayne.

Batman Begins definitely created a new generation of Batman fans, especially with younger people, who seemed to connect with Christian Bale's Batman. Bale's Batman is an outsider, fighting against society by seemingly doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants. As someone in my late teens, this spoke volumes to me and once again Batman was my hero, and I think many other angry young people connected with Bale's performance in the same way. After all, aren't most teenagers angry young people trying to fight back against society?

Then The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger happened.

Though Bale stills gives a great performance as Batman, it's clear from the beginning that something was off. It seems like Bale was intimidated by Heath Ledger's performance and tried to keep up with him, but just ended up over doing it, just look at his voice as an example. Christian Bale had a similar Batman voice in Begins, but it was a little more subdued so it didn't bother people, where as it was just plain distracting in many scenes of TDK. And the youth, who had connected with Bale so well in Begins now had a new hero: Heath Ledger's Joker.

We loved Batman as the outlaw bad-ass in Batman Begins, but The Joker took that to an extreme in The Dark Knight. We all long to be able to fight against the establishment, to do whatever we want and get away with it, and Heath Ledger's Joker did just that and made it look cool. Not only did Ledger's performance steal the movie from Bale, but his character was far more fun to watch than Batman.

Now, we have over a year until The Dark Knight Rises hits, and I think it's time to show everyone why we love Batman so much. Hopefully Bale has heard the criticisms about his Batman voice and scales it back. Bale has also got to scale back his performance and bring back more of that rebel cool that he had with the first film. Seeing how Batman will probably be a fugitive in this movie, the ball is in Bale's court to once again make Batman the guy we all want to be. Choosing Bane as the villain is a good approach because he's nowhere near as compelling as Joker, and hopefully he'll be a dastardly villain that will have us cheering for Bats again. This movie is Bale's last chance to show if he really is the Christopher Reeve of the Batman franchise and to show that Batman can be a hero and not an internet punchline.

I agree with your assessment that this might be Bale's last chance to deliver the goods. My problem with his interpretation is that all this time he's been a bit... emo. Where is the madman dancing on the precipice of insanity? Bale's Bat never struck me as... DRIVEN to the point of madness. Even at the end of the last film, he still seemed to be wrestling with the dual identity - there was still a difinitive personality line drawn between Bruce Wayne and Batman. I want that line FINALLY blurred (just like the comics)!

I totally agree with this article. In this movie Bale really has an opportunity to shine. Assuming they go with some sort of story where Batman gets beaten by Bane it would be amazing to see how Bale takes this opportunity as an actor to show his emotional range as a man who was completely torn down by society and a villian just to rise back up again. The Dark Knight will rise and hopefully Bale will too.

pretty much one of the best op ed this site has had in a while.

take notes all you "contributors" who whine about the gloves on the GL costume or poll obsessed freaks pitting Black Widow against Deadpool and the like.

I cannot prove it unfortunately, but they say it was Nolan's decision to modify Bale's Batman voice even more than it was done in BB. And anyway, I never could understand what's so bad about that voice. Well, except just one phrase early in the movie: "Ihhh'm nhhhot whhhearrringhhh hhhhhockhhhey phhhadhhhs!" Grrrhhhhh! Now that was just ridiculous.
And while I agree that Ledger completely stole the show from everyone in TDK, I believe it was the whole point of the movie to show what happens when such an unstoppable force comes in and starts to twist everything and anything around it. So, Joker was supposed to be the central character. And that's exactly what was bothering me all this time. When Bale, Nolan & Co were doing interviews for BB I seem to remember they were always going on about how wrong it was that earlier Batman movies concentrated more on the villains than on Batman. And then with TDK they went and did just that.
So, yes, I hope that TDKR will be more about Batman/Bruce Wayne, but not because Bale failed in TDK, but quite contrary because I am very much invested in his character and want to know the end of his story, and not to see some more villains showing off around.

I agree with you on the topic of Bale's voice. I also felt like The Dark Knight was more about Harvey Dent then Bruce Wayne, so not only did the Joker steal the show, Bruce Wayne was never the focus to begin with.

In fairness one of the more compelling batman articles I've read recently. To be honest I think a lot of what's written on the site is just garbage. I guess like a lot of things it just comes down to personal taste but generally I don't think it's wise to compare two different actors. I have a great deal of love and respect for Christopher Reeve but I just don't feel that he was in the same leagues as Bale. Bale is an actor's actor and I don't find the batman voice bad at all. It just seems that when one or two people write their opinions on the internet a whole bunch of other people decide to jump on the band wagon like sheep. Let's face those people couldn't do a better job of playing this part if their lives depended on it. Everyone's a critic and perhaps if they tried to do something of any worth with their own lives instead of pissing on someone else's performance then they could be take more seriously and perhaps they wouldn't feel the need to be so critical of everyone else all the time.

He'll never deliver the Batman goods until he can learn how to use a gruff Batman voice without sounding like he's been smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for 30 years.

This was a great, well written article but I will say one thing. You said that Bale seemed intimidated by Ledger's performance, but I do think that part of the movie was Batman experiencing intimidation as well as a fear of the Joker and what he is capable of. So I agree that Christian Bale was overcompensating a bit in TDK, but I think it worked. The final film should have more of a focus on Batman again, finish Nolan's trilogy then instead of rebooting it in 6 years, wait and give us a film adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, using Nolan's trilogy as a basis for casting and character development.

Nicely written, well thought out article. You deserve props for that. I don't agree with everything you've said ( voice, intimidated, fugitive), but I'm busy at the moment, so I'll get back to all that later.

Nice.

"It seems like Bale was intimidated by Heath Ledger's performance and tried to keep up with him, but just ended up over doing it"

That's a pretty strange assumption considering if there were such a thing as an onscreen actor-battle, it would make more sense if he was competing with Eckhart- and even then, how do you conclude that Bale is trying to out act someone? Even less likely, that one would discern intimidation from his performance. They had like two scenes together (Ledger and Bale) where they traded diolog.

Anyway, I agree that BATMAN himself is a little fish in a movie that is bigger than him. In TDK, BATMAN is merely one of the characters and never really rises (no pun intended) into a leading position. But in all fairness, his weakness here is due to an effective story that challenges BATMAN and breaks him down. He never really recovers and gets his ass kicked for most of the film. But it isn't nessessarily Bale that needs to bring BATMAN to the front of the finale, it's Christopher Nolan.

Christopher Nolan needs make sure TDKR is a BATMAN movie. He needs to make the story about Bruce Wayne and all that he's been through since BEGINS. He can't be smothered by an atmosphear that's bigger than him this time. I would like to see the focus on BRUCE/BATS. If Nolan presents the story this way, Bale will perform accordingly.

Christopher Nolan has to direct Bale. He must have thought the cookie monster voice was fine, because I can't see Nolan not liking it and not directing Bale to tone it down. At least two times near the end of TDK, the cookie monster voice is cringe-worthy. I think it was because BATMAN at those times were given longer paragraphs of diolog to say and he can't sustain that voice and sound emotional at the same time without it being a little over-the-top. It's up to Nolan, not Bale, to keep the voice in the range that it was in BATMAN BEGINS- although, it seemed unperfected at the time and Bale would do the monster voice and the Bruce voice both while in the mask. Still, it's up to Nolan as a director to correct this if he does indeed feel it needs to be fixed. He might not.

I agree with pretty much everything you are saying but I believe some of the scenes you mention in BEGINS where he uses his Bruce Wayne voice while wearing the cowl was on purpose. In the Batmobile chase, at that point, he's afraid he's going to lose Rachel which caused him to naturally yell in his regular voice. Due to his inexperience (in the story), he didn't keep his composure. In the other scene where he repeats Rachel's earlier line at the restaurant to her before he jumps off the roof, I believe he also used his regular voice to help her remember where she said that line and who she said it to.

Within the context of the film, it would make sense that Batman seemed a little 'perplexed' about the Joker - he's never delt with this type of criminal before. Remember Alfred's line, "Some people just want to watch the world burn..."? Up until this point, the Bat has delt with people who've had clear-cut motivations for their actions. It would be a little unnerving to come across someone who truly believes in and is committed to anarchy and chaos to the point of fanatcism. Face it, the boy ain't right in the head, and that would put anyone off!

BatPunisherFan You're probably right about the Bruce voice with Rachel. I watched the film recently and it seems like there were some inconsistencies outside of the Rachel situations. But as you've stated, he was new to the whole thing and he probably hadn't perfected his approach. The whole "Swear to me!" scene was incredible. I remember the audience in the theater were blown away by that. No one expected an alternate voice. It really lends itself to the fact that like Batman's enemies, he's crazy too.

I'm hoping for a happy medium with the voice this time. Nonetheless, I can't help feel the film will be phenomenal. I'm going to shit my pants at the first teaser trailer or official artwork.
