If you simply want to hear my current speculation about The Dark Knight Rises feel free to skip down to the third paragraph, however if you want to know about the inception of this speculation feel free to read on.
Since the moment that Bane and Catwoman were cast in the Dark Knight Rises I have speculated about what would happen if Bane would break the bat. I have speculated that should the bat be broken how would he recover or even if he would. Remember those rumors a while back when Mr. Nolan said that everything would come full circle, or that rumor about the inclusion of Robin. I speculated like crazy. When it was rumored by a certain CBM-er that Batman's back would in fact be broken, an idea came about. Where too begin... When Nolan said that everything would come full circle everyone went off about how it could mean the return of the league of shadows I found it all soooo boring because I thought i saw it all in Batman Begins; I went off in a different direction. When reported site scouting was done for bird boys hideout I started thinking of Schumachers Batman Forever, and then of the whole coming full circle thing. I remembered back to The Dark Knight when Harvy Dent said that "...Batman must be looking for someone to take up his mantle." I started drawing connections between the league of shadows, Bane, Batman's broken back, Catwoman, and Robin. I began to combine all the speculation to form one piece of massive speculation myself, and here it is.
Bane is sort of the Dark side of batman, the thing batman could have become had he joined the league of shadows or if luke had joined vader to rule the galaxy. Bane after hearing about the death of his mentor Ras al Ghul seeks revenge against the Bat. Bane takes over the now leader-less mob and destroys Arkham Asylum letting all the crazies run loose. Batman physically and mentally weakened is now attacked by Bane and his back is broken. Selina Kyle and Miranda Tate take care of him. Selina then finds the Lazerus pits and dunks Bruce Wayne. Batman then goes after Bane eventually defeating him (barely)gets killed by mob and the mantle of Batman gets passed onto a close friend (Dick Grayson). However the mob again without a leader becomes a disorganized mess. With Gotham cleansed Grayson never has to become batman.

NOTE: I know in the comics there is another heir to the Falcone crime family called Alberto Falcone, since he has not been cast in the movie yet i am assuming that in the Nolanverse/Batman-Universe he does not exist.
