Robin Williams Denies That He's Pursuing The Role Of The Riddler In Batman 3!

Hardly suprising news, but the actor does go on to talk more about nearly playing the villain in past Batman movies and says he'd love to work with Chris Nolan again despite the backlash from a few angry fans...

Remember when Robin Williams told Empire Magazine that he'd love to play the Riddler in the next Batman movie? (If not, click HERE to read the original article) Well, when quizzed by British tabloid The Sun recently, he was quick to point out that the whole thing has been blown completely out of proportion!

"They've now made it seem like I'm lobbying to play the Riddler in the new movie. It's not true."

"I was once offered the Joker, then they gave it to Jack Ncholson, then they offered me the Riddler and they gave it to Jim Carrey. I've been punked twice, don't punk me again!"

"Now I get the angry people saying, 'He should never play that part!"

However, he was quick to point out that he'd love the oppurtunity to work alongside director Chris Nolan once again, "It's Chris's call, man. But to work with him again - oh god, I'd love to, it was a great experience on Insomnia."

Looks like he might be quite keen on portraying the villain after all! With Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy and Leonardo DiCaprio all also apparently in the running, do you think Robin Williams is a good choice? Share your thoughts in the usual place!

Another great find Josh!

It would have been an interesting & different direction with the character (him being old & an actual comedian). Having an older wise-ass for a villain would be quite entertaining in Nolan's "so serious" franchise.

I love Robin Williams but unfortunately he is a bit old. Who know though, i could be wrong, i didn't think Heath Ledger would be the right fit as the Joker. I was definitely wrong about that! I mean he isn't just a comedian, look at Good Will Hunting. Great movie and he was one of the best performances!

Yeah, he's not quite the best fit for the Riddler. It's not like there's a shortage of actors who are fit for the part.

I think that Ryan Gosling would be an excellent pic for The Riddler. Joseph Gordon-Levitts is a great actor, and would be good for ANY role in the movie.

I kinda think he'd make a cool TOYMAN?

He could play that well creepy!

DCMF: Thanks again bud, lol! :P He would have made an even better Riddler than Carrey a few years ago but I think he's just too old for that particular character now. However, the point you make is a great one which is why I'd love to see him play a character like Ventriloquist or even Toyman! (never thought of that before...great idea LEE!)

Why is he too old? Is there a mandatory retirement age for criminals? its not as if the riddler is known for his fighting skills.

However, I am not sure he would be a good fit for Nolans Batman universe....I kind of like Paul Bettany for the Riddler, if that is the villain we are going to get in Batman 3.

I'm thinking Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the guy nolan will pick for the villan in this one no matter what it is. He loved him while they were making Inception. And to be honest Leo wouldn't be bad either. to pull a quote from 40 year old virgin in regards to Decaprio "Y'know, I always thought that (Leo) was like a Streisand, but he's rocking the shit in this one! " :)

I think he would make a good Arnold Wesker ( The Ventriloquist) he can play the mentally disturbed (look at one hour photo)

NPH for riddler. robin williams would have been a good choice 10-15 years ago

Depending on the direction Nolan is taking the character, i think Williams would be a fine choice. Leo and JGL are both 2 of my favorite actors. Who the best choice is completely depends on what angle they are taking with the Riddler.

but if i had to pick one i'd say..Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

he would own both joker and riddler. especially the joker in '89. but the riddler even now would be excellent choice. although carrey and nicholson were great choices back then, why did they offer it to him if they didn't want him eventually?unless he turned them down which doesn't seem to be the case because he says he liked both roles and wanted them when offered.

Good lord dont let him get close of Nolan Bat movies. Williams sucks seriously, but I agree with @LEEE777 DiCaprio or Depp should play The Riddler, and yeah dude Williams would be good as Toyman, just not as Riddler.

I just wrote a little article about how I think they should take the character toward "Alex" in A Clockwork Orange - it should be in "editorials" in a few.

I've been thinking about Williams, and was considering writing something about him in my article.

I don't think there's anyway in hell he's going to get The Riddler, but considering he has close ties to Nolan, and Nolan's directed him before (Insomnia), there's a good chance he'll pop up as some other character.

He basically helped kick Nolan's career into high gear, and he's stated "if there's anything left he wants to do, it's Batman"... he'll be in it to some capacity - watch.

Levitt would be a much better choice.

Williams is a good actor (even if he contiues to choose shitty films), but I can't imagine him playing anything less than one of those campy villains like Ventriloquist or something.

And honestly, I don't see most of those cheesy villains working in a Nolan film.

Yep, good call. He'd be better as The Ventriloquist. Then again, Steve Buscemi would nail it harder & cost less IMO.

Batmanknight - 8/31/2010, 1:01 PM
I think many years ago he would've been right for the part but he is just too old now. Maybe for the Ventriloquist he would work though.

If you want to read my take on how to end the Nolanverse then click on the pic below. You wont be disappointed

Here's what they need to do:

Have the Riddler have his face covered or obscured when he appears in costume. Cast three or four great actors (Depp, DiCaprio, etc.) as people suspected of being the Riddler. Don't reveal who the real Riddler is until the final act.

Come on, Nolan! This is the kind of edge stuff that made you famous! You know you want to!

Brashlight: Lol, nicely said and I completely agree! :) If the Levitt/DiCaprio/Hardy rumour was true, I think we win whoever Nolan picks, but Levitt would be my top choice for the Riddler despite the fact I'd love to see DiCaprio play a villain as well!

Now give us a Biel bomb already would you? ;D

After Insomnia, I don't see any reason why Williams couldn't play Riddler. Why is he too old? Too old for what? He can be whatever age the writer wants him to be. What does Riddler need to do that he needs to be young for?
@Gusto please keep posting comments suggesting David Spade, Rob Schneider, Adam Sandler etc. as casting choices. If you just stick with it, I'm sure eventually someone will laugh at it. I think it gets funnier every time you do it.
