Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a divisive movie and the response to that changed the DC Films Universe in a major way. Regardless of whether you loved or hated it, though, the Zack Snyder helmed release definitely left us with plenty of big moments to discuss and many of those are spotlighted in this incredible batch of concept art from the critically panned DC Comics adaptation.

From the fight between the titular heroes to various designs for Doomsday, Man-Bat, and what The Joker left behind
of Robin's costume after murdering the youngster, these are all a must-see!

Like Justice League, Batman v Superman could have been a very different movie and that's clear from looking at some of the pieces here. So, to check out the entire list of concept art, all you need to do is
click below. Once you're done, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

The Dark Knight Returns Inspiration

Well, you don't need me to tell you which comic book inspired this gorgeous piece of artwork! The Dark Knight Returns heavily influenced all of Batman v Superman and this shot is amazing.

Superman Drops From The Sky

Say what you will about Zack Snyder but the visuals in his movies are always extraordinary and this concept art shows off a moment it's easy to imagine the filmmaker bringing to the big screen.

A Very Different Take On The Caped Crusader

This is...weird. Not only is the Dark Knight wielding a gun (something which became a regular sight in Batman v Superman) but he's wearing a stylised cowl seemingly based on the Batman Beyond comics.

Robin's Suit

This gorgeous piece of artwork shows the tattered remains of Robin's costume and it's clear that the Boy Wonder went through something truly horrific after crossing paths with The Joker.

An Iconic Comic Book Moment

This early sketch from Batman v Superman shows the Man of Steel rushing into action and it perfectly recreates the cover of Action Comics #1 as the hero lifts a car above his head as he saves the day.

Doomsday

Doomsday's appearance in Batman v Superman was controversial but it appears as if Zack Snyder always had a very specific idea in mind for the villain and we see here how that was conceptualised.

Batman Surveys Gotham City

This atmospheric shot of the Caped Crusader did sort of make it into Batman v Superman but the hero was holding a rifle which he used to fire a tracker at Lex Luthor's truck full of Kryptonite.

Man-Bat

While this creature was a figment of Bruce Wayne's imagination in another of the movie's weird dream sequences, it's probably the closest thing we're ever going to get to Man-Bat on the big screen.

Nice Ears, Batman

Following The Dark Knight Trilogy, Warner Bros. had to come up with a new look for Batman and that clearly included a cowl which included some massive ears. It's not a very practical look really!

Superman Calls Out Batman

This very cool piece of concept art shows the moment Superman used the Bat-Signal to summon the Dark Knight to a fight. It's pretty cool but was likely used to just set the tone for the movie.

Coming Up With The Costume

This detailed sculpt shows the amount of work which went into bringing Batman to the big screen and that awesome utility belt definitely pays homage to the character's adventures in the comics.

The Batman Makes His Arrival

I'm not sure if that's the Bat-Signal behind the hero or just his shadow but this shot of the hero making a very dramatic entrance is very cool and (sort of) ended up in the final cut of the movie.

Batman v Superman

These pieces shed a little more light on how the fight between Batman and Superman was imagined by Warner Bros.' team of concept artists and that shot of the two heroes doing battle is epic.

One of the worst things about BvS is all the inspiration they took from Dark Knight Returns. You don't base your new cinematic universe on an elseworlds dystopian story!

Agreed. At least not this soon.

@Nightwing1015 - Really, who could have imagined that utilizing a great story that is predicated on understanding the pre-existing relationship between two characters would be a good idea for a nascent film universe? I mean other than the "hurr, batman fights superman, hurr" fans (Snyder)

@Nightwing1015 - But if you do make sure to throw in the iconic death of a character, and take away basically everything that made it somewhat impactful in the source material.

@Nightwing1015 - That's what ALL Batman stories are doing nowadays.

@Nightwing1015 - Not to mention the fact that they wasted ideas and elements from TDKR to create their shitty movie. Batman v Superman [frick]ed up almost any possibility of a future film adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns.

They crapped in the room and smeared it all over the walls.

@Dotanuki - I really wish the would’ve just focused “The Worlds Finest”. See Batman and Superman investigating each other, introduce Wonder Woman. I would’ve preferred it.

The Doomsday we got in the movie is so sub par to actual concept designs. It was so basic.

For all the talk of Snyder being a visual guy, these concept designs are a millions times better than anything in the movie. I mean, any shot of Gotham in BVS was so bland and devoid of any of the culture found in The Dark Knight returns.
