Kevin Smith has had a few chances to play in the world of superheroes, from writing comic books to directing television shows based on them. However, the writer and director maintains that he is a fan first and foremost, something that was on full display during his New York Comic Con panel yesterday when he raved about Marvel's Luke Cage.

“It was f*cking good,” Smith said (via ComicBook.com). “I had no expectations of that and they told a much better story than I thought they would. I mean we live in a world were they are making a f*cking Ant-Man sequel. We didn't have this sh*t when I was growing up.”

Smith went on to tell the audience that fans of comic book films should be appreciative of all of them, bad or good, given that he, as a fan, is now able to see his own childhood dreams come to life. “Creation path is wide open, man. We should appreciate it. It is easy to pay to see a movie, sh*t on it, and be negative - but I am on the other side of this... As you sit around taking a sh*t on things, the world is passing you by. There is no good reason to do it. You try to ascend in life and people try to drag you down. I guess misery loves company. There will be always people to sh*t on things. I just think about being that 10 year-old dreaming that people would make these films and now they are so be happy."

Smith also addressed the critical negativity surrounding the DCEU, all three films of which have been received poorly by critics. "They are never going to be Marvel movies... and as a long time fan of this sh*t I don't care, you are either a DC guy or a Marvel guy and really DC isn't ever going to do what Marvel does... but really, when I was a kid and wish they had all this sh*t... so for years we have wanted this and now we got it...I've watched Batman versus Superman extended edition 25 times since I got it, my wife has said 'You've watched this sh*t 25 times, you know what happens... f*cking Martha.' ... and I just say, 'I know, I'm just going to keep watching it until I love it.'"

I think that's off the mark. We're talking about a movie here not some life or death situation.

Movies are products created by billion dollar studios to be bought by the public. Products can either be good or bad. They can either work for the people or fail miserably. Consumers have a right to disregard a shoddy product if it fails to meet expectations.

Especially if that failure is near-universally agreed upon.

I don't have a right to make a sub-standard vehicle, sell it to you, then chastise you for being a purely negative person for telling me it sucks.

The lesson for me would be to make better cars, not just buy and enjoy the bad ones with your mouth shut.

A famous millionaire Hollywood director isn't exactly someone I'd call unbiased so basically saying 'it's not us, it's you' seems absurd.
