Why BATMAN/SUPERMAN Should Be Cancelled

Why BATMAN/SUPERMAN Should Be Cancelled

Tonight, as Christmas looms and all is cheerful, I sign my death warrant as I tell you just why I think DC's potential classic shouldn't even make it past the drawing board. Hit the jump to see just what the problem is...

Editorial Opinion

Disclaimer: This editorial is not hating/trolling DC fans, as a comic book fan I can't wait for World's Finest/BvS. Man of Steel was a great film that has given WBDC a platform to build on, that's what I want to see. Seeing the two put there differences aside and teaming up is going to be one of those cinematic moments I'll remember for life. This editorial is simply why I think DC should take a step back and prioritise. With all that said and done, you can now go and throw abuse at me.

Batman and Superman; the world's two most iconic heroes, undoubtedly responsible for the fame comic books have encountered over the years. And after 30 years of waiting, in 2015 the pair will finally meet on screen. But why will WB's finest hour not be the World's Finest? It's simple really and it all starts here...

Timing

DC's big field day takes place in 2015, or as it's also known, two thousand and Disney. Unless you haven't heard there are two other blockbuster films on their way in Disney's year. One is the follow up to the most successful comic book movie in history, The Avengers: Age of Ultron; the other? It's the follow up to the most successful and influential film franchise cinema has ever known, Star Wars: Episode VII, and unless Disney are taken over by some pacifists, it's going to be a pretty violent whirlwind promotional campaign for both films. Realistically, no one can beat the power of Disney, their our world's SkyNet, you can't beat it. On top of that there's always brand recognition, Marvel are hot right now and people will watch anything with the Marvel name attached to it (Even Agents of SHIELD). Which conveniently takes us around to our next point...

The Brand

For 5 years now the world has been bombarded by Disney, the red background and block white capitals are engraved in every 8 to 25 year old's brain in the western world. The fact of it is Marvel sells. DC? Sure the Nolan Trilogy was a success and Man of Steel made a lot, but they don't have the Avengers windfall or the RDJ boost.
DC have two options on this one. They can:
Take a shot in the dark and hope that the general audience just want more comic book action and ride on Marvel and Nolan's success; or they can,
Wait. Simple as that, they wait. Iron Man and Thor didn't team up in Iron Man 2, they had two solo films and doubled their profit. The same goes for DC, are people ever going to stop watching Batman films? No, never. The modern age of CBMs will go and come but Batman is eternal. Throw in Ben Affleck and you have a gold mine.
DC need to wait, it isn't about beating Marvel now, it should be about surpassing them in a number of years. Give crowds a Batfleck film first, then a Wonder Woman or Flash (Maybe even a Martian Manhunter or Aquaman) because we do have to remember...

This is a Superman film

So far we know that, we have Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, we're probably going to get Metallo, Flash and maybe even Nightwing and Aquaman. But stop! This is Man of Steel 2, not Man of Steel and Various Assorted Others. How about we just get Metallo, the man made of steel, against Kal El, the Man of Steel? In the last few years we fans have continually wanted the bar raised. Don't you remember Spider-Man 2? Rami's masterpiece, with just ONE villain? Or Nolan's Dark Knight, perfection in every sense of the word, with one (truely brilliant) villain and a sub-plot with a minor villain?
Nowadays we want the Justice League right now, or the Infinity Gauntlet waved in front of us every other film.

In conclusion, I just want a great film, I don't want it now, I want it when Zach Snyder is sure that he has squeezed every last possible outcome to this film and picked the story to entertain the gods. Who knows what MoS2 will be like? It might be the best damn thing we've ever seen, maybe it'll achieve world peace.
All I know for sure is this, Marvel fan or DC fan, on opening night 99% percent of this site will be there come 2015, and whether it's a masterclass or a Green Lantern-esque escapade, we're gonna talk about it for years and analyse the crap out of it.
So whether it comes out in 2015 or 2050, just give us a great film Zach.

Batman and Superman finally sharing the big screen,Wonder Woman finally making her big screen debut and you want it cancelled before you have seen ANY footage or have ANY idea where they are going with the story. Yeah, okay dude whatever.

Captain America- No sequel before Avengers
Hulk- No sequel before Avengers
Thor- No sequel before Avengers

And who is saying this is not a Superman focused movie?! Why would they be using his villains?!

DC has to do it in 2015, if they wait any longer, Disney/Marvel will completely take over the world of cinema.

Um.....no. Batman/Superman will still make a shitload of cash. Just having those two names in the title will guarantee a {frick}ing huge amount in opening day. Not to mention its an event movie, like Avengers.

I think Luthor will turn out to be the villain, maybe Metallo or someone else as his henchmen. I think the Wonder Woman/Nightwing stuff will most likely be a cameo or minor role. WB isn't stupid...

"Captain America- No sequel before Avengers

Thor- No sequel before Avengers"

You've just backed up my point, Hulk, Thor and Cap don't need sequels. The MCU took Stark as their main character, he did get a sequel.
DC haven't even given WW, Flash, Aquaman or anyone for that matter an origin
DEVLIN712
DEVLIN712 - 12/22/2013, 7:36 PM
For those of you who are complaining, I want this movie to be made. The whole point of this editorial is due to me believing that DC are jumping the gun, you can't fit 4 origins in the one film, then it's going to become a mess.
Moohika
Moohika - 12/22/2013, 7:46 PM
@Devlin712
Just because Marvel did it that way and DC is not, doesn't mean they are doing it wrong. They are trying to do something different, and I think its a good thing they are not copying Marvel's route to Justice League.

I'm fine with DC doing it their way but I still think you need an origin first, Spider-Man 3 was a good example of trying to give too many origins in one film, it doesn't work
Moohika
Moohika - 12/22/2013, 7:55 PM
@Devlin712
People don't need an origin, Everyone knows Batman's origin by now and WW's role is going to be very minimal considering it was announced as a Batman/Superman movie.

People still aren't getting what I'm saying. I don't want BvS to come out in 2015, here's why:

Marvel have a proven working method, I trust them for AoU
Star Wars has to start somewhere
As for DC, I want more time spent on the film. I don't want the trump card up front if it isn't going to be as good as I want it to be. DC should take a few years to make more films in that universe. Then they can have the tone and pacing set, with origins out of the way you can do Justice League
BenjiWest
BenjiWest - 12/22/2013, 8:15 PM
Cancel??? Not everything has to emulate Marvel. Plus Star Wars is coming out in winter. That year may showcase the continuation to one of cinema's most successful and influential film series, a sequel to the most financially successful comic book movie, but with BvS we're talking about a film featuring two of the most influential and iconic characters in comic book history.

@ DEVLIN712, Thank you for writing this!! This echoes pretty much exactly how I've been feeling since the news broke on a Superman/Batman team up movie. Every point you made is strong and totally right.

On a side note, don't you love the angry, bitter replies you get thrown at you that are proof positive those people read the title, stopped right there, and proceeded to go to the comments in order to curse and call you out? How about reading the entire article, people? It's not even that long! He explicitly states how much he would love for this movie to work...it's just the timing is wrong and the fact that this is a Superman sequel, not Justice League Lite. People can't read anymore, and it bothers me to no end. Whatever. Great article, dude!
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/22/2013, 9:06 PM
Pretty much half of the entire Justice League is confirmed for this so-called Man of Steel sequel, with another 2 or 3 of them heavily rumored to appear in it. That's on top of Bruce Wayne's love interest appearing in it, Lois Lane, the rest of the Daily Planet crew, rumors of Nightwing/Robin...doesn't this seem a bit crowded?

Oh, and at least 2 Superman villains, which I guess helps the filmmakers rationalize and make believe that this is still a movie about Superman and NOT a desperate reaction to the fact that Man of Steel made much less money and much worse reviews than they hoped for. Which, well, is exactly what this is. And so what's the best way to remedy that? Throw in the character who's standalone trilogy easily grossed a couple billion dollars, as well as the first live-action portrayal of a famous, empowered female superhero in several years.

IMO, it's a bit delusional to think that they made this decision because it would make for the best plot. They aren't doing this because it's a natural progression from the events of Man of Steel, or because it will give proper service to the characters. It's a cash grab, plain and simple.

@Jollem, Talk about over-generalizing. I suppose you liked Spider-Man 3, even though that was "overcrowded." Just know that there's a difference between overcrowded and just an abundance of main characters. Spider-Man 3 falls into the former category, and movies like The Avengers and Ocean's 11 (obviously not a cbm, but it definitely proves this point) fall into the latter. The difference comes from how the filmmakers are able to juggle so many different characters while giving each of them their moment to shine, as well as providing good reasons to have so many characters there in the 1st place.

And comic books don't work as straight adaptions into movies, this has been proven time and again. They are two completely different mediums. There's a reason The Avengers was considered to be such a huge risk. And even then, they had to leave out a ton of characters from the source material. Having a million characters in the comics is different once you translate that to the big screen. Overcrowded movies almost never turn out good at all.

I am just finding all these editorials hilarious to start with. One we have not idea what the movie is about only that Supes and Bats will have a full role and WW may have a small role.

Second how much longer do we want to wait for DC/WB to kick off the DCCU? I mean what keep pushing it back and nothing happens........ At this point putting Supes and Bats on the screen together is the best chance on getting his off the ground.

Also last note, guess what DC and Marvel fans Warner Brothers does not give two $hits about DC characters or the fans. They do not put these movies out for us they do it to make money for themselves and the shareholders. And do not fool yourself into thinking that Marvel/Disney gives two $hits about their fans as well. At this point Marvel/Disney will keep pushing out Marvel movies till no more money can be made. This is clear as day after seeing Disney pushing out more SW movies, they will milk all their cows dry. Sooner or later the mass audience will be bored with all the saturation of comic book based movies from Marvel and DC.
DeathstrokeTerminator
DeathstrokeTerminator - 12/22/2013, 9:29 PM
@SauronBane
I still fail to see how this movie is overcrowded. It's Batman and Superman with Wonder Woman involved, everything else is rumor.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/22/2013, 9:31 PM
@SotoJuiceMan, It's confirmed that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Wayne's love interest, Superman's love interest, and the Daily Planet crew are all going to be in it. Sure, the rest are rumors and it's up to us if we choose to believe them. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see those other characters pop up too. But I get what you're saying, so fair enough.

And I disagree about how throwing in Superman villains automatically makes it a Superman movie. Was Avengers a Thor movie just because Loki was in it? And the point you make about it being "their movie" is exactly what I'm criticizing. Say that you're right. Say it IS a Superman movie, and a Batman movie, and a Wonder Woman movie. The studio announced this as a Man of Steel sequel, which means it should be a Superman movie. I don't see how you can reconcile those facts.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you, the Hobbit is so obviously a cash grab. And it's definitely true other studios have been doing that too. But look at the quality of those types of obvious cash-grab movies. Are they very good? For the majority, it's a resounding no. Who wants to settle for that? I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd rather have high-quality, non-cash grab movies made out of respect for the characters. IMO, this movie isn't shaping up to be one of those.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 12/22/2013, 9:42 PM
@Jollem, I enjoyed a few things about Spider-Man 3 as well...but by no means is that a good movie. It doesn't hold a candle to the 2nd or even the 1st movie in that trilogy.

And IMO, the way the story went was 100% dictated by having so many villains/characters, having to devote precious screentime to their origins and motivations, and having less time for other more important things. You can't really separate the villains from how the story went. They are intrinsically linked together.

And sure, of course there are plenty of good movies that happen to have good characters. X-Men is probably a good example of this. The Last Stand definitely proves my point, though. It's a very thin line to walk across, I'll readily admit that. But history proves that most "overcrowded" movies really don't end up that good at all.

And Avengers was most definitely a risk. Combining those characters into 1 movie, and giving each of them room to breathe, interact with each other, develop their respective characters, and give them each a moment to shine isn't something to sneeze at. That movie could've been one of the worst disasters in recent memory. I don't see how anyone can say it wasn't a huge risk.

MoonDoggyX - 12/22/2013, 9:49 PM
The movie should be canceled??? Read the whole article, but ur points are just silly and ungrounded.

Too many characters for a proper story? Avengers much... FALSE!

DC/WB should take a step back and give evry character an origin film bacause that's what Marvel did. DC is not Marvel, WB is not Disney. Not every character needs an origin film. TIH bombed, he was still awesome in the Avengers... FALSE!

With all of marvel's big releases, there's no room for the MoS sequel in 2015. Summer 2011 Harry Potter 8 and Transformers:DotM released only 2 weeks apart, both grossed over $1 billion. Summer 2012 both Avenger and TDKR grosed over $1 billion... FALSE!

Disney is too powerful to be beaten. Tell that Cameron! FALSE
