BLACK ADAM Star Dwayne Johnson Is Confident He'll Face Superman On Screen No Matter Who Plays Him

Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has admitted that he's aware of the desire from fans to see him clash with Superman on screen, confirming it will likely happen regardless of who is wearing the red and blue.

There's a lot of excitement surrounding Black Adam, but for many fans, seeing Dwayne Johnson's anti-hero clash with the likes of Shazam and Superman is what they're really waiting for. While those meetings are bound to happen eventually, the origin story comes first as Warner Bros. and the actor look set to establish that new hierarchy of power in the DCEU we keep hearing so much about.

Talking to Total Film, Johnson made it clear the team working on Black Adam knew exactly what they did and didn't want to do heading into the character's big screen debut.

"You get one shot out of the gates to build these characters properly," the actor admits. "We paid attention to some of the pitfalls that other films had experienced in the past, in the world of DC, and what, rightfully, got a lot of fans unhappy and pissed – and, as a fan, I was one of them."

"So, let’s make sure we respect tradition and mythology, but let’s not be handcuffed creatively," Johnson added when asked about the dream clash with the Man of Steel fans are so anxious to see. "We can do anything if we keep the audience first. So to me, there’s a battle that’s going to go down one day, between Black Adam and Superman."

"I don’t know who that Superman is going to be, and I don’t know who’s going to play him," he admitted, referring to the uncertainty surrounding Henry Cavill's future as Kal-El as Warner Bros. continues to develop multiple reboots. "That’s OK. I don’t need to know right now. But I’m confident in knowing that. And that’s based out of what fans want. We worked backwards from there."

A huge crossover is clearly planned for somewhere down the line, though it will be interesting to find out which version of Superman Johnson's Black Adam winds up facing. Cavill will be the top choice for many fans, though the hunt is believed to be on for a Black actor to play Kal-El in a reimagining of the franchise from producer J.J. Abrams and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Black Adam will thunder into theatres on July 29, 2022.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - came to write more or less this. Thanks for making it pointless!

In all seriousness, he seems to keep forgetting he’s playing that characters nemesis

@SpideyPuffsMJ - This made me laugh too hard. at work. lol.

i agree.

however, in fairness, he probably keeps getting asked about Black Adam going up against Superman. It's like the press only cares about Batman and Superman. And again, to be fair, WB hasn't given them much else to care about. Yes, I liked WW, but WW84 sucked, and yes Shazam was good, but it was overshadowed. Aquaman was just okay IMHO. Now, what Rock could and probably should do is correct them and say "I'm excited for that but i'm just as excited for him to face Zach Levi's Shazam. That's going to be so unique and great." or something like that. It seems it would be more advantageous for the Rock to be hyping Shazam, Levi, and that sequel.

The dichotomy between the 2 works better when they both aren't killers. Right now, Cavill's Supes is just another side to the same coin, so they'd almost certainly need to use another iteration.

Seeing The Rock say "Yea, a lot of those Phase 1 DCEU movies were pretty ass" was not something I had on the bingo card, but this man has never missed a "good marketing" beat so I shouldn't be surprised

I just found out that Arnold Vosloo voiced Adam in Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam and it's so fitting it hurts.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - @Superspecialawesomeguy - This could be how/why Superman fights Black Adam: Helping Shazam. Imagine, if you will, a Shazam movie that starts off with the post credits scene from the first Shazam, of Superman joining Billy at school for lunch. Afterwards the kids are all geeking out. Fast forward. "Bro, you're still talking about that one time Supes had lunch with you at school. You weren't even Shazam, you were billy. He hasn't been by since."

Later in the movie, Superman helps Shazam fight Black Adam.

What a douche. Cavill was an excellent Superman. I think Johnson is intimidated by Cavill. Johnson should support Cavill returning. But he doesn’t want to be overshadowed.

musicsuperhero1 - 12/7/2021, 12:31 PM
@TheEon - In fairness, the Rock is a huge star. Cavill's been in one descent Superman movie and arguably 2 bad ones. He's got the Witcher, sure, but that's niche. And he's got Man from UNCLE. The Rock, like him or not, is a bigger star. So i sincerely doubt he's intimidated by Cavill at all. I think he's likely just saying, "we don't know who that superman is going to be"...because we don't.

Can we just have a new (hopefully good) Superman movie before we talk about all this?

He should've said Cavill's Superman. Even though I rather see him square off against Shazam, Superman (or both) would be fun too. If someone can make Hollywood do his will, it's The Rock. And if he wants is aware of what (part of) the fans wants, it's Cavill's return as Superman

He seems a lot obsessed with Superman but Shazam is Black adams number one enemy. Superman is the top dog there’s no hierarchy change coming. Lol he loves that too. But he shouldn’t be looking past Shazam so much is my point.

Dwayne wouldnt have taken the role if they had Zachary Levi defeat him. He wants Superman recast with a lessor known actor so he can defeat him. And WB will probably do it.

Wait if your movie turns out good then you plan ahead, all this chest beating interviews will conclude in nothing if the movie ends up being a mess.
