After a lot of build-up and hype about changing the "hierarchy of power in the DC Universe," Black Adam arrived in theaters to (mostly) negative reviews and underwhelming box office numbers.
Shortly after, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as DC Studios co-heads, and we'd soon find out that Dwayne Johnson's take on the Man in Black wasn't going to be part of their plans for the new DCU.
Johnson has previously weighed-in on the movie's disappointing BO performance, but while being interviewed by Variety on the Academy Awards red carpet, the actor responded to the critical reaction and the fact that he brought Henry Cavill back as Superman only for Gunn and Safran to announce that a new actor would be taking over as the Man of Steel.
“Our audience score was in the 90s," Johnson said of the reviews. "Critics took a couple of shots. That’s just the business of it, though.”
As for Cavill, Johnson compared the situation to a football team that gets a new manager who decides to replace the coach and the quarterback.
The chances of a direct sequel to Black Adam are practically non-existent, but Johnson could get the opportunity to suit-up as the titular anti-hero again down the line if the Shazam! franchise does continue after this month's Fury of the Gods.
