BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Promo Art Reveals New Look At A Regal Namor And His Cousin Namora

The latest Black Panther: Wakanda Forever promo art has revealed a new look at both Namor the Submariner and his cousin, Namora, a character who has long been rumored to appear in the blockbuster!

Over the weekend, a first look at Namor the Submariner in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was revealed. This early sneak peek came our way courtesy of promo art that will adorn merchandise for the sequel, and we're anticipating a trailer for the film dropping imminently.

Thor: Love and Thunder blasts into theaters on Thursday, and with the Black Panther follow-up set for November 11, the next few days would be the perfect time to release a first look.

Until then, we have more new promo art. The first shows Tenoch Huerta as a reimagined Namor; now hailing from what we're assuming will be an underwater city located somewhere in South America, the Mayan inspiration is clear to see from his headdress. This is a very regal costume and one that promises to jump off the screen in live-action.

For many fans, the fact that Namor still has wings on his ankles, which allow him to take flight, will most certainly be welcomed. They're part of the character that would have been greatly missed had Marvel Studios not found a way to translate them to screen.

In the second piece of promo art, we see Namora, Namor's cousin. Mabel Cadena is supposedly playing the character who, in the comics, is also half-human, half-Atlantean. Based on the hero's blue skin tone, this won't be the case in the MCU, and is likely a result of Marvel Studios looking to differentiate Namor from his fellow Atlanteans.

These designs are undeniably eye-catching, and we've no doubt Namor will be a big part of the first Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer, especially as he's supposedly the film's main antagonist. As for the identity of the new Black Panther, we don't anticipate learning what's happening on that front until the sequel is actually released later this year.

I understand in the comics he had more defined Asian features, but did they ever link it culturally? If so I can understand why some people are against the race swap, if you can even call it that.

But if not, I think it's cool they've given the live action version some cultural significance of the actor to those he ends up representing.

@UnderBelly - Namor was never really culturally asian, and his dad was a white looking dude named Leonard Mackenzie, so I think the seemingly asian features were just a design choice to differentiate him from most other characters (and hard to not assume that there wasn't some borderline racist 'otherism' going on with that design choice given the time).

@UnderBelly - The only thing that linked Namor to Asia is that he fought against Japan in WW2. Namor himself is not linked to being Asian only that in some art pieces he looks vaguely Asian, Dr. Strange has a similar look in a handful of his first appearances as well.

Golden Age Atlanteans looked a lot more fishlike and were actually quite industrialized starting and partaking in a lot of war conflicts, but that's largely ignored in "modern" Marvel. When Marvel as a whole was developed in the 60s Namor was basically reimagined to be similar to be a lot more royal and live in the underwater palace city that is Atlantis. Their culture was based on the roman pantheon with Namor quite often invoking Neptune then anything from the orient. That being said there were also the city of Lemuria aquatic aliens knowns as the Banari which explored the topic of genocide, Zepherylandians from another dimension, and a number of aquatic experiments that usually resulted in enemies for Namor.

None of these are inspired by Asian culture nor Aztec/Mayan. I would have loved if Marvel just expanded Atlanteans to have had branched out early on (they're very old species) to have developed a lot of different cities and cultures without having to rewrite Namor and the Atlanteans completely. Having splintered factions ousted from Atlantis like Attuma (he was a barbarian Nomad) found multiple cities would have been really cool to explore.

@OmegaDaGrodd @FearTheLiving -

Thanks. Sounds like you both know your stuff. I didn't know much more about him other than he was was a love interest for Sue Storm at some point and also on the Illuminati. Both of which I think were recent in the comics... well at least in the last 20 years.

@UnderBelly - I wouldn't consider myself a Namor specialist, just that the race stuff has always been kinda weird (good catch on the Dr. Strange similiarities, @FearTheLiving) and that depending on the artist, he's looked extremely different. As for the Sue stuff, that actually goes back a looooonnnngggg time haha

Yup... might as well have been an original idea that simply referenced Namor and Atlantis, cause this just aint either.

@OldMan - Don't get me wrong. I believe the movie will still be decent even if I disagree with the directions I usually still enjoy them for the most part. It just saddens me the first time we're gonna see one of if not the first Marvel Superhero and they're only using fraction of him and choosing to rewrite the rest. At that point why even call this Namor?

At the very least I don't think it'll be Batman Robin bad XD

I dig it, I really do. The only thing about this that makes me sad is Boseman is no longer with us.
