Kevin Feige Reveals His Favorite BLACK PANTHER Moment And It's One Ryan Coogler Thought He'd Have To Cut

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has shared his thoughts on his favourite moment in Black Panther and it turns out that it's one director Ryan Coogler assumed he would be forced to cut by the studio...

Black Panther was a groundbreaking, incredible movie which not only massively exceeded expectations at the box office (especially for a character previously perceived to be "B-List"), but also just became the first superhero movie to be nominated for the "Best Picture" Oscar.

During a recent interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about his favourite scene in Black Panther and it probably won't surprise you that he chose Erik Killmonger's emotional death.

"That amazing line, that he [Coogler] and his co-writer, Joe Robert Cole, wrote for Killmonger as he lay dying outside the vibranium mines looking over Wakanda. T'Challa says, 'I can try to heal you,' and he says, 'Why, so you can lock me up? Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage.' That was in the first draft. It was one of the best lines we ever read. We said, 'There are going to be a lot of revisions, but don't touch that line.' And Ryan said, 'That's the line I thought you'd tell me to cut.' And we said, 'On the contrary, keep it and build more of the movie around it.'"

It's interesting that director Ryan Coogler assumed this was a line which would ultimately be cut, but it's not hard to see why given the meaning behind it. Still, you have to give Feige credit for realising how important it was and his insistence that the filmmaker make it a vital part of the story.

Feige being such a fan of the way Killmonger died may also go some way in debunking those theories that the villain will be somehow resurrected for the planned Black Panther sequel.

Great movie, not sure if it deserves best picture, but still a great film.
For Solo films last year, Kings ruled

@dracula - Damn, the Civil War suit is so much better than the BP one....

@SobecKing - Yeah funny, Black Panther had a great suit in Civil War, then got a way less great suit in Black Panther. Aquaman had an alright suit in Justice League then pretty much got a perfect suit in Aquaman

@dracula - Very fair point on both. Yeah Civil War BP suit was dope in the fight scenes...damn near perfect. They should have evolved on it for the solo outing but it regressed with the cgi element. They'll fix it for BP 2 though...thye'll fix everything....everything? EVERYTHING!

@OptimusGrime - Hopefully Ryan doesnt skip out on the franchise like he did with Creed 2, Creed 2 was still great, but it was a noticeable step down from Creed

@dracula - Completely agree! With me Creed 2 was a nostalgia project- great to see dolph and that big blonde bird back - completely forgot her name lol!! the film was relatively well done. As you say step down from Creed but i enjoyed it nevertheless. Wait ...I thought my man Coogler had signed for BP 2?? Is this not the case...am i misinformed?? Tell me it aint so Drac's...

@OptimusGrime - Pretty sure he is meeting with Marvel, but he hasnt actually signed on yet. Also I think your thinking of Bridget Neilson, now that had to be akward on set between her and Stallone

@dracula - Yeah...awks much lol. TBF i dont remember them having scenes together - in terms of lines anyway?? Maybe a couple of looks across the ring at the end.
Ahh well i hope Coog's signs...as long as he's not asking for a blank check which he can choose an outrageous payday...i dont see why he wouldnt?? Meh movie politics. Heres hoping!

@OptimusGrime - From what ive heard they were civil with each other, for the most part they stayed away from each other.

Hopefully he signs on, wonder who they will use as the villain, they used Killmonger, Klaw and Man Ape in the first film. I guess they could have Man Ape turn against him. Does Black Panther have any other big villains, I know they talk about using Kraven The Hunter in the first film, wonder if they could use him for the second

@OptimusGrime @dracula - Coogler has officially signed on to direct and write I think. Pretty sure it was announced last month or earlier this month. The cast also confirmed that he has. He's not going anywhere lol.

Regarding the two suits, I think what really makes the CW work is the muscle padding (particularly in the shoulders) and the helmet, but the suit was a lot more difficult for Chadwick to wear and move around in because he was always hot and uncomfortable in it. The new suit is a lot more form fitting and actually fits Chadwick's frame a lot easier (you can see him and the stunt double move a whole lot easier in it), and the helmet is also a bit more roomy so he can breathe better.

The CW suit to me looks badass but sometimes it also looks a bit overdone and baggy, while the new one still looks sleek. If there's gonna be a new suit, I say they should take some inspiration from the two suits (change the helmet, add a bit more padding, make the feet smaller etc)

@DnA - hope they get rid of the glowing or at least have it glow less
Kumkani
Kumkani - 2/18/2019, 2:57 AM
@dracula - Yea, I think that's one of the reasons why they relied heavily on a CGI replacement more than they should have. The glowing definitely shouldn't be there all the time (only maybe when the suit takes a hit).
OptimusGrime
OptimusGrime - 2/18/2019, 3:33 AM
@DnA - Yeah i agree with both. Think they sacrificed aesthetics for actor preference lol. Either way if we can get a healthy mix of both ...well that would be just swell...

@dracula - I think they pulled the trigger too soon on a drago fight. Creed 2 should have been against Danny wheeler and then turned into a trilogy focusing on the creed legacy against drago

The first one was brilliant though.

Here's to hoping we get more Michael B. Jordan in the sequel. He was a great villain/antagonist.

I have a feeling he'll be brought back via the ancestral plane.

@L0RDbuckethead - Wonder who they will use as the villain of the next one, they killed off Killmonger and Klaw. I guess Man Ape could turn against him, but other than that not sure what other villains black panther has

@dracula - Personally - i'd like to see Achebe be the next villain. It would be a more cerebral/manipulation type movie..rather than all out action. Obvs we'd need action in there!!- but if they could do a movie like CA Winter Soldier's type vibe then that would be awesome. Something along the lines of Othello - with Achebe being the Iago type character. Thoughts?? Have i just cracked the code??
I swear if they do this..then im asking for royalties...or at least a production credit hahaha..I can see it now "OptimusGrime from CBM"...Producer...

dracula - 2/18/2019, 2:49 AM
@OptimusGrime - never heard of him. Really need a good jumping on point for Marvel comics, I started reading DC on a regular basis around 2013 and started reading new 52 stuff, lots of great stuff there, think people just focused on the bad, before that all my knowledge of characters came from movies and tv, and occasional comics. Tried to find a jumping on point , way too many relaunches and with every one, there was always some change that just did not work for me, the spiderman body swap, all the major heroes being sidelined for new characters who didnt earn those identities. Marvel comics have just been too gimiky for me to jump onto
Kumkani
Kumkani - 2/18/2019, 2:55 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - Achebe based on what was set up in the first film would be perfect and I can see Coogler going with (a less ridiculous version of) the character. And really the next film needs to lean into more of the political drama/thriller and James Bond/Mission Impossible-esque tendencies that were introduced in the first film.

Denzel would be a huge get (especially since Chadwick practically owes his career more or less to him lol) and I can see him absolutely killing the role and elevating a good script. I also want to see more of T'Challa's intellect, chess player, can't-trust-anybody side (leave the high tech stuff to Shuri).

I had this idea that the final battle should be based on a bargaining moment decided by an African board game like the ones in Mancala
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 2/18/2019, 3:18 AM
@dracula - That's Denzel as Achebe, the guy that @OptimusGrime & @DnA are talking about. Achebe would be perfect, even if Denzel said no.
OptimusGrime
OptimusGrime - 2/18/2019, 3:37 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - Would be dope..we know Denzel can do a villian...add a couple of other smaller villains in there like Kraven (not saying he's small but ..do an origin story or some shizz) and someone else lesser...then we got a movie ya'll
