Wakanda Forever: Remembering Chadwick Boseman, Our BLACK PANTHER And A Real-Life Warrior

Following the heartbreaking news that Chadwick Boseman has passed away after a four-year battle with cancer, we're paying our respects to the actor and looking back on the impact he had as Black Panther.

42 and Captain America: Civil War put Chadwick Boseman on the map, but 2018's Black Panther established the actor as one of Hollywood's brightest stars. While cries of "Wakanda Forever" were certain to follow him wherever he went next in his career, Boseman becoming a huge action movie star or the lead in the type of films that earn widespread acclaim and countless honours come awards season seemed inevitable. Sadly, we'll never get to find out as his life ended yesterday after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Since 2016, Boseman - who never went public with his diagnosis - continued to work, all while undergoing treatment and surgeries which even the strongest among us would be unable to bounce back from, never mind report to countless movie sets to bring a superhero to life on screen.

To call Chadwick Boseman brave and a warrior simply doesn't do the man justice, and while his time here came to an end far too soon, his legacy is one that will never be forgotten.

While he made an undeniable impact outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with hard-hitting features like 42 and Get On Up, his time as T'Challa in that comic book world was a game-changer for the genre and cinema as a whole. Grossing $1.34 billion worldwide, Black Panther dispelled the notion that movies with a Black lead could not perform well overseas (or in the U.S.), and helped open the door to superheroes being taken seriously by the Academy. Since then, there's been a notable uptick of Black leads in both film and television, but the cultural impact the movie had is even more important than the business one.

A whole generation of young people (of all races, but particularly those who are Black) were given the opportunity to see themselves reflected on screen. Black Panther is a hero to everyone, but to those who had spent years seeing Black actors pushed to the sidelines as sidekicks or supporting characters, the 2018 release changed everything. "Wakanda Forever" became a rallying cry, while the way the movie celebrated Black culture marked a huge turning point for this genre, in particular. In the wake of Black Panther's release, everything from initiatives to teach children more about African culture in schools to the #WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe hashtag, which saw people open about their own Black identities, were launched. There are those who might argue that the movie would have had the same impact regardless of who donned the costume, but without Boseman, T'Challa would simply not be the same hero who created this swell of pride and unity.

His performances across the four Marvel movies he appeared in were flawless, and the sense of honour, fearlessness, and gravitas he brought to the role will inspire people for generations to come. There was something special about Boseman, and while everyone who worked on Black Panther behind and in front of the camera helped create the beautiful, exciting, and often awe-inspiring first superhero film to be nominated for "Best Picture," he was the heart at the centre of that.

Looking ahead to the future, there will be fans who can't help but wonder whether the role will be recast in time for 2022's Black Panther II or whether Marvel Studios might go back to the drawing board and perhaps have Letitia Wright's Shuri inherit the mantle as she did in the comic books. Right now, it's unfathomable to debate what comes next, but Black Panther should live on, and we should forever be grateful to Boseman for bringing him to the big screen in such an effective, memorable way. What he went through these past four years proves that he was every bit the warrior T'Challa was on screen, and shows why there was no one better to play this character.

Wakanda has lost its King. Hollywood has lost one of its brightest stars. Chadwick Boseman's friends and family have lost someone who meant more to them than we'll ever know. However, the impact he had on this world won't be forgotten.

Wakanda Forever.

I honestly cannot deal with this today. I'm not okay.

When Black Panther was coming out my mum had lung cancer and she really wanted to see it with me. But she couldn't because she was too ill. Seeing the film was really only one of the few moments of joy I had during that time. She passed before we could see it together.

To think that all that time, Chadwick was fighting his own battle is both truly inspirational and heartbreaking. I've seen what cancer does to people and to know he was going through that, while seeing just how much of an impact he was having on millions.

I will never forget what Chadwick gave us. I don't think anyone else will. Black Panther aside, he was really making a name for himself too. He was an icon before this and now is a legend. Rest in Power, my king.

And for everyone else, please listen to your bodies. Please take care of yourself in anyway you can. And support cancer research.

This is so unforseen. I checked my phone to see it was full of messages. I could tell someone had died even before I opened them but never would have guessed it was Chadwick.

This is so awful. He filmed Black Panther, Infinity War and Endgame in between battling visits to hospitals but he was so dedicated that he persisted anyway.

What a hero.

He was an incredible Black Panther. So lucky he got as much time in the MCU as he did.

RIP and Wakanda Forever.

@IronMandarin - ikr? It was so sudden. Im guessing that had we not gone through the pandemic his cancer diagnosis would've been more noticed by the public. But yeah, this is usually how it goes. We can never tell when its coming. He was a great man.

Black Panther is my personal favorite MCU movie and honestly one of the best superhero movies ever made period. Planning to rewatch it today in Chadwick's memory.

I am staggered by this lost. Rest in Peace, Chadwick Boseman.

I don't personally stay plugged in to actor's social media presence on twitter/instagram etc. But I'm just reading now about how people noticed his dramatic weight lost in the past six months. The signs were there and I didn't realise.

To imagine what he committed to his roles, battling what he went through, resonates hugely for the hardships of 2020.

@GothamSon - it was talked about even on here a few times mainly in passing but some assumed it was for a role, but others were genuinely concerned about his health. It wasn’t a big deal but a concerning one for probably a few days. But this is just so surreal..

Can honestly say that he’s of my heroes. I remember going with my family to watch “42” in theaters and being inspired as a young black teenager wanting to pursue acting to see someone that looked like me that was new on the scene just killing it. Then proceed to kill it as Jackie Robinson in “Get On Up”, and of course his role as King T’Challa as Black Panther. His SAG Awards speech on being “young gifted and black”, has kept me going against so much.

With legends like Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier still being alive as living legends as black actors, this comes as such a shock when someone so young but did so much while battling with colon cancer for 4 years... is just gone. Thankful for the inspiration he has been on not just me but millions of others.

Rest In Peace to the Legend, Chadwick Boseman 🙏🏾👑

His passing still hasn’t hit me yet. I never in a thousand years thought he’d die so soon. R.I.P Chadwick.

I...I actually don't think i can deal with this.

We all have actors or players etc... that we lost and have been following for years and this is not even the case for me with Chadwick.
I am ashamed to admit that i actually discovered this GREAT man, this GREAT actor thanks to those Marvel movies.

A man lost his life and as human beings, because we have compassion, news like this was always going to hit us hard.
But i never expected that it would hit me...THIS hard.

I'm not exactly crying but i'm in legit tears right now.
Without even realizing it, even now that i'm typing this, i catch myself wiping them off.
Didn't felt like this not even when Paul Walker, Heath Ledger, Kobe or MJ died.

People are saying that this came out of nowhere and while i understand that, considering he left things private, i actually remember seeing a bunch of pics where he...didn't look so good.

In my heart i hoped -like i'm sure many other did- that he was losing weight because of some role, cause actors tend to do that.
But i rememeber thinking that he actually looked ill.
It's 2020 and yeah, i'm not gonna lie, for all i knew, it could've been covid and although it can be deadly, he could've recovered from it, that thought crossed my mind, and as bad as this may sound, i lowkey even hoped that at WORST it was covid.
Anything else would've been too serious, i think he was even in a wheelchair.

But no, it was [frick]ing cancer and not just any cancer but colon cancer.
I think this is why it hit me so hard. Colon cancer.
[frick] YOU CANCER [frick] YOU [frick] YOU [frick] YOU FUUUUUUCK YOU!!!!!
ESPECIALLY COLON CANCER, BURN TO THE [frick]ING GROUND, [frick] THIS GODFORSAKEN YEAR!!!!

And...i mean, he was battling it for 4 years???? Like WHILE he was filming all those big movies??????

MY [frick]ING RESPECT.

You were loved and you will always be remembered.

P.S. Sorry if this becomes a copy-pasta, i tried to post it in the other thread but i think it's glitched.

@Doomsday8888 - It kind of shocked me in terms of how we process these things. I lost someone close two months ago due to cancer and it was a rough ordeal for my family and I for the two years leading up to it and the night it happened isn't something I can get out of my head. When I woke up and read about this it just brought me back to that night and it really hurts knowing what his family are going through, and no doubt what many people unfortunately have to go through. I sincerely hope for the best for his family and all those who were close to him both directly or indirectly.

And to whoever is reading this, if you feel something odd with your body, it could and most likely is nothing, but it never hurts to get it checked up (I understand for Americans this might be more difficult financially). Especially Colon Cancer, there's plenty who may have been embarrassed to get a check up when experiencing symptoms, but there's nothing embarrassing about it. Please be safe and look after yourselves <3
