Black Panther continues to surpass milestone after milestone at the box office. King T’Challa was dethroned from its No. 1 spot atop the box office - where it has resided for the past five weeks - by
Pacific Rim: Uprising weekend; however, the Marvel blockbuster hit some impressive milestones this weekend.
Not only did
Black Panther surpass Marvel’s The Avengers to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time in the United States, it’s now officially the third highest-grossing superhero film of all time globally!
With this weekend’s box office haul,
Black Panther sits at a worldwide total of $1.237 billion, officially passing
Iron Man 3 ($1.214 billion). Having passed
Iron Man 3, it’s now the Marvel’s highest solo film, as it trails only
Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 billion) and
Marvel’s The Avengers ($1.518 billion).
The movie industry owes a lot to Marvel, director Ryan Coogler, and the cast, as
Black Panther has single-handedly kept revenues on par with last year. In fact,
Black Panther accounts for nearly a quarter of the film industry’s domestic box office revenues for 2018 so far. It’s currently the 5th highest grossing movie of all time domestically. With
Ready Player One opening this week, it'll be interesting to see if
Black Panther continues to have strong legs.
