Recently, we had the chance to talk to Tonderai about his work on Spell and where he hopes to take his filmmaking career next. No stranger to the world of horror or comic books after taking the helm of shows like Castle Rock and Black Lightning, stepping into the director's chair for a blockbuster seems like a natural next step. As a British director, James Bond is understandably near the top of his list.
"[I] also want to do Bond. You want to do something as big as that just because it's something I was brought up on as a kid," he explained. "It's always been part of my family life. You want to do a Marvel film because it's a very different discipline. When you do a project like that, it's not really a Mark Tonderai film, it's a Marvel film. So, how do you get your DNA into a film like that?"
Talking of Marvel, there's one character, in particular, who jumps out at him.
"I'd love to do Blade. Blade, for me, is right up my street in terms of my sensibilities. I also think Stephen Norrington did a brilliant job with the first incarnation of it, and I'd argue that it was the first, other than Tim Burton's Batman, superhero film that really revolutionised movies to where we are now. So, Blade, I would absolutely love to do."
Interestingly, it sounds like some sort of comic book TV show or movie could already be on Tonderai's radar, as he later told us: "There's another project I'm working on at the moment which I can't discuss that's really exciting and I hope I get it."
We'll have to wait and see what that is, of course, but with the hunt now on for Blade's writer/s, the filmmaker definitely seems like a solid pick to board the Marvel Studios reboot.
