CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Rumor: Is Falcon Just Sam Wilson In The Sequel?

Leaked info, a photo and a brief conversation with a production person has things sounding like there's a chance Falcon will just be called Sam Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Read more after the jump...

So far the only main actor seen around the exposed Downtown Cleveland sets of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. The other actors are definitely in Cleveland since they've been spotted at various hangout spots around town the past week or so. Marvel has their lead actors lurking where cameras are not able to see them.

One actor many fans are excited about—besides Cap, Winter Soldier, etc.—is Anthony Mackie's Falcon (Sam Wilson). An introduction to the hero will occur in this sequel and it is assumed Falcon could be a new member of The Avengers, in the ensemble film's sequel in 2015.

A possible issue with Falcon right now, apart from not seeing him on set and in full costume, is what will he be called on the big screen. The Daily SuperHero managed to ask an on location production member about Falcon and the response was, "You mean Sam Wilson?" And nothing more was said.

Was that a hint? It's starting to sound like Falcon might not be called Falcon at all and he will just be Sam Wilson in Cap 2. Yes, this is just a guess right now but even in the leaked script pages from the Washington D.C. filming it listed the character as Sam Wilson. Not as Falcon.

Don't forget that in the new animated series Avengers Assemble Sam Wilson is called by his name and his suit is called a "Falcon suit."

The only piece of evidence that goes against Wilson not being called Falcon is a photo which was taken of a black case on the back of a production truck that read "Falcon." (See that photo below.)

Marvel Studios has used the real names of characters in past movies. Some examples include: Savin who was not called by his comic villain name Coldblood in Iron Man 3 and Ivan Vanko who was not called Whiplash in Iron Man 2, to name a few. So there is a legitimate chance Marvel might not call the hero Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Especially since those leaked script pages did not call him Falcon.

Just a theory, but perhaps a passing joke about a falcon could be in the script as a homage to the hero's name. Sounds like something Marvel would do to add a splash of humor to a scene.

Stay tuned as The Daily SuperHero is your on location source for Captain America 2 in Cleveland.

Probably the same way "Hawkeye" and "Black Widow" were used in The Avengers.

Sam Wilson is the name you'll hear more, but they'll call him Falcon as his code name.

Like the way Erik Selvig calls Clint Barton the "Hawk".

It doesnt really surprise me. They didnt use codenames in Avengers, only last names (besides calling Rogers Cap).

Of course a location production member may not be a comic fan and has only heard Sam Wilson being used on set. So it may be an issue of ignorance on their part.

Based on that statement you came up with them not using the name "Falcon". Boy news must be slow.

But I would assume they will use the name as much as they used Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow or Hawkeye in the Avengers. Even in the comics, most of the heroes use their real name. Captain America is called Steve all the time by many who know him.

Black Widow and Hawkeye were called by their codename only once in The Avengers. It's no big deal. I can live with that. As long as he has the wings and kicks ass.

Yea, i imagine those names as "Press Names" and not how guys/girls who are friend referring to each other..

Even as a kid, i always wondered how Batman and Robin didn't slip...

Since Sam Wilson is a SHIELD agent, then I doubt he'll get to be called Falcon. Neither Clint or Natasha were called Hawkeye or Black Widow in the MCU movies.

TheHeat - Only once. The Russian general guy called her Black Widow at the beginning of The Avengers, and Widow called Clint Hawkeye during the final battle.

He's dressed like some ordinary guy anyways so why not?
His outfit doesn't even look as good as Hawkeye's did.

He looks like some random dude from a local skydiving
club who bought a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D patches at the store
and ironed them on his suit. And then, guns. Because why
not? Black Widow's got 'em and they can kill aliens in battle
armor so uhh let's just give him a pair and call it a day then.

Well let's see. They haven't called most of their supporting characters by name. Here's the ones that come to mind: The Howling Commandos, Iron Monger, Whiplash, Black Widow (accept that one scene in Avengers), Hawkeye, Abomination, War Machine (until mentioning it in IM3), and I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now.

It's kind of the same way most of the minor characters are never named in Star Wars. We only know their names from toy packages.

Does it really matter? I mean, I don't think Hawkeye was ever called by his full codename, and Black Widow only had hers referenced a few times. As long as they stay true to the character from the comics, and he gets some great moments on screen, I don't think it really matters if they address him directly as Falcon.

Not a big deal if they don't use the name. Rhodey wasn't even called warmachine officially on screen until after they changed it to Iron patriot in IM3. Remember in IM2 tony only ask if he wanted to be a warmachine, didn't really call him that.

I liked the first one and I'm still looking foward to this ond too
but I'm approaching this one with cautious optimism.

But if the main villain ends up being Trevor Slattery
again I swear to God...

So it's fine for Marvel Studios to not embrace comic book names but its heresy when Fox and Sony do it?

Bias. Bias everywhere.

Something tells me it'd be a guy called Captain America, and not SHIELD, that might eventually call him Falcon. You know.. despite calling Hawkeye "Barton" and Iron Man "Stark". It's probably a good thing he called Hulk "Hulk" and not Banner, or the movie might have ended right about there...(for Cap anyway).

That's usually how these Marvel movies go. They use the birth name and then work in the character name at some pivotal monologue/dialogue point. Abomination, Iron Monger, and War Machine.

I hope this is just a ridiculous internet rumor to get everyone worked up. I'm not commenting further until this is either confirmed or debunked. I'm hoping for the latter.

@Nomis: Classic movie! A truly underrated comedy for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Not a big deal. They've already done this for Clint Barton (Hawkeye), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and as you mentioned, the Iron Man villains. Also don't forgot, Quicksiler and Scarlet Witch will be called by their real names.

I know people talk about how the MCU "sin't based in the real world." And I'll grant that for the most part. But while it's a fantasy world, it's a fantasy world with the real world as its base. While people have nicknames/code names we don't often use them unless they make sense to. Usinf Captain America and Iron Man make sense cause that's how the [movie] world was introduced to those characters. I don't know. I think there's some purists that will have issue with this, but I don't see a reason to.

IF this is indeed true I hope we hear the nick/codename at least once or twice.

Avengers Roll Call!

Captain America! Iron Man! Thor! The Hulk! Sam!

Yeah I...just don't....

Being that he has no super powers or costume like the original version of Falcon, they might as well call him Sam Wilson. Go figure...

I'm sure he'll be referenced as Falcon in some way or another. They call each other by their names in the comics also.

No big deal really. As has been said they don't use the code names for the 'other' characters in the movies too often- see Black Widow and Hawkeye.

KrazyForKomix - 5/30/2013, 11:20 AM
Look, as long as they go super realistic, I don't care what they call him. He should have a big ol' safety helmet just like Cap. He should have a SHIELD-issue military style uniform (nothing red at all like the comic of course). And no bird crap. In fact, wouldn't be a lot more believable (from a mass audience standpoint) if he didn't fly.
Yeah, yeah!
Special Agent Sam "Snap" Wilson - he's the black guy!
Our SHIELD quotas in action!

just like everyone in the avengers
no once they say iron man, but stark
a guy in russian says "black widow", then its just romanoff
once romanoff says "hawkeye", the rest is barton
etc
