BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Breaks BATMAN v SUPERMAN's Advance Ticket Sale Record

Batman v Superman broke many records before plummeting during its second and third weeks, and we now know that Captain America: Civil War has already effortlessly beaten one of them...

Captain America: Civil War kicks off the summer blockbuster season this Thursday, and while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have opened during the spring, expect box office analysts to spend a lot of time looking at how the two movies compare over the next few weeks as the figures for Marvel's first Phase 3 release start rolling in. In fact, that's already begun, as Deadline brings word that Civil War has topped the advance ticket sale record which was set by Dawn of Justice for a superhero movie a few months back.

With both critics and moviegoers on their side based on how well Captain America: Civil War has been received overseas, Marvel and Disney are no doubt expecting big things during May, something which should start this weekend when it opens with upwards of $190 million. Initially predicted to come in slightly lower than Avengers: Age of Ultron, it instead seems as if the movie will have no trouble surpassing that. Either way, the trade believes the studio would be extremely happy with a debut as low as $175 million, so whatever happens, it's going to be a good result for them.

Captain America: Civil War has already earned $224.3 million from overseas, and is accounting for 90% of Fandango's ticket sales this coming weekend in North America. Tracking is notoriously unreliable, so it will be Friday morning when those Thursday evening numbers come in that we start getting a better idea of how big the movie's opening will end up being. Right now, it's said that Marvel are expecting something around the $20 million range, but these releases always seem to exceed expectations (remember The Winter Soldier?), so we'll have to wait and see how high it goes...
