Captain America: Civil War is about to make box office history by flying its way into the fifth biggest opening weekend of all-time in North America with $180 million. After an impressive $25 million haul on Thursday evening, the Marvel Studios movie earned an estimated $75.3 million yesterday, and it now looks set to top Iron Man 3's $174.1 million haul to take that highly sought after #5 spot.
In terms of how good of a result those Friday numbers are, Captain America: Civil War has the eighth highest opening day of all-time behind the likes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and yes, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, this movie will easily top that one's opening weekend, making Marvel the victor when it comes to 2016's biggest superhero vs superhero release.
The biggest difference between them is the fact that Captain America: Civil War has legs and should effortlessly reach $1 billion within a matter of weeks. Audiences have grown used to these characters now, and after The Abysmal, sorry, Amazing Spider-Man 2, it's hardly a shock that the wall-crawler's presence hasn't sent this movie rocketing past The Avengers' opening haul of $208 million from 2012.
Regardless, this is a fantastic result for Marvel and no doubt ensures that they're already talking about a Captain America 4! Have you see the movie this weekend? As always, let us know in the usual place.
