Marvel's The Avengers opened to a massive $207 million back in 2012, and that was thought to be the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of domestic openings. However, the box office experts now have
Captain America: Civil War opening to a whopping
$213 million, which would make it the second biggest domestic opener just behind
Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247 million).
This is great news for Marvel and Disney! In comparison,
Captain America: The First Avenger opened to $65 million and
Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened to $95 million. In an even better comparison,
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to a disappointing $166 million. If this projection is indeed true, that would put it at almost $50 million more than the critically panned Zack Snyder film.
Captain America: Civil War has already opened in international territories and is breaking records. On top of that, the film is the most critically-acclaimed Marvel film yet.
