Working Title For CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Revealed, But What Does It Mean?
Make the jump to find out the production title that Marvel Studios is using for Captain America: Civil War while in development, and also how the title might indicate what may happen in the threequel!
While Captain America: Civil War is currently in pre-production and scheduled to start shooting in early spring in Atlanta, Georgia, the Marvel "Phase Three" initiator is following suit with using a fake title to keep fans off its trail during development. According to Production Weekly, as of late October, that working title is Sputnik. These title ruses are usually nothing more than subtle references to certain minor aspects of the movies - like how The Avengers had "Group Hug" and Captain America: The Winter Soldier had "Freezer Burn" - but it's always fun to speculate on where Marvel Studios might have drawn inspiration from, and what it may indicate about the movie.
With Captain America: Civil War, "Sputnik" is of Russian origin and is associated with the first Soviet space mission (among other things) in real-life. However, in Marvel Comics, the name did not only belong to an obscure character, who first appeared in Captain America #352, and later became known as Vostok. In the Death of Captain America storyline, "Sputnik" was also used as a "one-time only shutdown code" against the Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes, which was implanted by his Soviet Masters. This particular issue had Winter Soldier taking on Crossbones, S.H.I.E.L.D., as well Tony Stark's Mighty Avengers operative following the death of Steve Rogers. Considering actor Sebastian Stan is set to return as Bucky Barnes/ the Winter Soldier in Captain America: Civil War, and the character will have some regard to who he really is, could the working title "Sputnik" indicate another comic book inspiration for directors Joe and Anthony Russo, besides the Civil War?
Directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, Captain America: Civil War stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Frank Grillo, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie & Daniel Brühl, with appearances by Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson expected. The film opens May 6, 2016
