UPDATED: Captain America Put On Hold?

Just a rumor for now, but apparently after Joe Johnston's Wolfman flopped, his next project, The First Avenger: Captain America has been put on hold indefinitely..

Source: Remingtons

This comes from movie blog site Remingtons...

"A source at John Landis’ Burke and Hare film shoot informed me that due to The Wolfman’s poor performance, the Captain American film (set to be released 2011 according to imdb) has been pushed back.

Considering a look at boxofficemojo.com reveals the $150 million dollar werewolf flick has grossed under $100 million worldwide, this doesn’t seem too unlikely. The delay in shooting could indicate a change in directors."

Interesting stuff..and pretty believable given The Wolfman's poor performance and the fact that they have yet to cast Cap with production due to begin within a couple of months. The again, they can't exactly make The Avengers without Cap so if Marvel still have plans to get that movie together the delay can't be too long. How does this tie in with the recent "wish list" contenders? I have no idea, but I'm willing to bet they were complete bull! Another interesting thing is that the source of the rumor came from the set of Burke And Hare..the same place that the recent Batman 3 rumors came from. So either they have an insider thats willing to spill the beans..or an asshole that enjoys making stuff up! We should find out soon one way or another.

Anyway, if it is true its a shame in one way..but then again it could well be a blessing in disguise.

Update 1: Superherohype now claim that Marvel have been in touch and the rumor's are false. But..we shall see!

Update 2: Marvel have also contacted C.H.U.D with this...

I just heard back from some folks at Marvel at they categorically, up and down, completely and without hesitation deny that there is any delay on The First Avenger: Captain America or that the production is any trouble. Everything is moving forward right now, they tell me.

Of course thats what the studio would say regardless of the actual situation..but its looking like this is bull so far. Johnston is our man!...along with that pathetic short list of actors:(

Seems like all we have been getting is rumors and info that we can't trust for quite some time on Captain America. I may take a break from Cap threads until we have some concrete news.

ahh well i didnt really like wolfman and i was excited to see it. I hope they arent pushing it back because i want Cap soon. But if they think a new director will make the film better then i guess do it soon. A bad Cap movie would be really shitty

Yeah, it sounds terrible on paper, and it is disappointing in that we may not see Cap in all his glory for even longer than expected, it very well could be for the best, like you said.

A delay could mean adding some extra time for production to really get this movie right, because this is one Marvel movie you can not screw up. They can focus more on casting the right people, getting the right story, creating the right atmosphere/vision, etc.

Oh, and if Johnston leaves, I won't lose sleep over it. Provided the guy they get to replace him is competent of course.

I guess we'll just wait and see if it's bullshit or true.

If this is true, it may not be a bad thing. I don't no how the rest of you feel, but I wasn't too thrilled about Joe Johnston directing in the first place.

Man, that cookiepuss kid did this same article last night and got laughed right off of CBM with the same source but I don't think he put the rumor stamp on it.

I don't think I can trust any Cap news for some time now unless it is straight from Marvel

Unless, Johnston is adapting one of Mark Gruenwald's Cap-Wolf stories for the movie, I dont see the point in this being pushed back.

Wolfman was going to fail anyway the budget was too big for a horror movie.

first Saw movie did better it only had a budget of 1 million and it made $103 million lol

I hope it's true. But even if it is that doesn't necessarily mean there will be any massive delay or anything. It could just be a month or something.

Maybe they already have someone else in mind already. Somebody who ISNT going to rest on his laurels for four months before getting started. Somebody who doesn't disrespect the American flag.

I don't care about Rocketman. I just have a really bad feeling about this director. I don't think he's the right man for this job

@ Flames: Unless he isn't.

I saw The Wolfman a few days ago and walked out pretty unimpressed...after the recent short list, I'd actually be fine with a small delay if it meant a new director! I really dont think, and never have, that Johnston is the right man for the job!
TheGrinch
TheGrinch - 2/26/2010, 1:49 PM
I dunno, out of all the CBM's in production right now I worry about this one the most. The idea is great (period Piece) it breathes fresh air into the genre, but I just don't know if the director can handle it i mean he's decent with action (Rocketeer, Jumanji,Hidalgo) but Dialoge and movement not so much (Jurassic park III) and Wolf-man was only decent, I get that they were going for "old horror movie" styling but it was just too cheesey for me, and the CGI was pretty terrible.. Cap has alot of story, alot of character, and Dialoge is even more important considering that it's a period-war-soldiers-CBM movie...So yeah i think i'm okay if Johnston walks/gets-booted...

How can they compare the wolfman flopping to Captain america? Two totally different genres.

@ Tea, March 1st would be awesome, thats my bday and I'm going to be out partying anyway.

I don't even understand the hype with Ackles. He's shown absolutely zero interest in the role and yet some people are still so persistent making rumors to make themselves believe he's even still a contender.
Phinehas
Phinehas - 2/26/2010, 1:58 PM
The studio didn't help Wolfman by opening it up in...Febuary?!?! They would have done much better by shelving it until October of this year. I don't think its floppiness reflects entirely to Johnston's direction, or even del Toro's perpetual drugged-looking gape and lackluster performance.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/26/2010, 1:58 PM
Yeah they are totally different, but a flop is a flop. I mean how do you mess up The Wolfman?? You don't. Not that Johnston did completely..but it was very mediocre. And any studio would worry when they look at that receipt.

Why I felt this may be credible was the where the leak came from. Seem,s to be quite a bit of rumor coming from the set of this Burke And Hare.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/26/2010, 2:00 PM
Pym- If he had "zero interest" in the role, he wouldn't have said that it would be "cool" in the supernatural video panel with Jared AND he wouldn't have read for the part. And of all the actors on the rumored list, which guy actually whent on the record as saying he'd kill to play Cap??? Only Vogel has his "fingers crossed" as of the moment. Even McPartlin isn't campaigning that hard! It IS logical to think that Marvel is requesting the least amount of press out of their hopefuls until their choice is made official. Christ, even Vogel wanted to keep his mouth shut.

JENSEN ACKLES IS CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!

I have no faith in Joe Johnston whatsoever. So, I hope this is true. Get someone who has a serious interest in not just making a good movie, but the character as well. Joe Johnston has already said he has no interest in Comic Books. The reason Jon Favreau made an AMAZING Iron Man movie is because he's a genuine fan of the character. Joe Johnston just isn't the right fit for any of these movies. Drop him, and get someone who is.
