John Krasinski Tells Conan About Testing For CAPTAIN AMERICA

Before Marvel cast Chris Evans to play Steve Rogers aka Captain America, the shortlist for the role included John Krasinski, Ryan Phillippe and Sebastian Stan with Krasinski rumored to be the favorite.

"In my head, I got the part [laughs]," says John Krasinski in response to a question from Conan O'Brien while appearing on the latter's TBS talk show.  The two are talking about just how close Krasinski came to landing the role of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematice Universe.

When asked to describe his screen test, Krasinski reflects, "It was a big deal for me becuase first of all, I love those Marvel movies, I love superheroes, I love imagination.  So when they asked me to test, they actually allowed me to put on the suit, I was on a set, it was all very interesting.  I feel like as I'm talking about this someone from Marvel [mimes shooting a blow dart]....I'm actually not suppoused to talk about this... but the only bummer of it was as I was putting on the suit and thinking this is so amazing; I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself - [keep in mind] I wasn't 13 Hours [John Krasinski] yet.  I felt pretty good.  And all of a sudden, Chris Hemsworth walks by in his Thor suit and went, 'Hey, mate.' And I went, 'I'm good. This is stupid [mimes taking off pants].  I'm not Captain America, it's fine. "

Of course, Chris Evans would go on to land the role back in March 2010 and the rest is history.  A popular fan theory is that Marvel's decision to go with Evans over Krasinski is what prompted Krasinski 's wife, Emily Blunt (Jon Favreau's first choice for the role) to drop out of playing Black Widow in Iron Man 2.

While I like John Krasinski and like that he's shedding the Jim and Pam reputation.... I am sooooo glad this never happened

@Kman - same feeling on Emily Blunt as black widow.... Everything went the way it should've and I couldn't be happier about it

If Evans was never Cap, I'd have been fine with Krasinski, to be honest.

But there's no way in hell I'd want to change who we got. Evans IS Cap.

@MattBellissimo - couldn't agree more... almost all the Marvel castings are dead on.

@MattBellissimo - I still think he needs more authority. Cap in the comics is a badass. MCU cap is more goofy sometimes...

@mutantsoldier2 - Goofy? Can you elaborate on that one?

@mutantsoldier2 - I feel the opposite in that Cap in the MCU is a Badass but in the comics is a bit sanctimonius...except in the Ultimates.

@Kman - yes that is exactly what I mean

@mutantsoldier2 - that's not elaborating... that's just agreeing with yourself.

@mutantsoldier2 - well I mean... while I did post a Goofy Cap picture. I was generally curious why you think MCU Cap is too goofy. I was actually hoping you'd elaborate with some specifics.

@Kman - ..still prefer Edward Norton Banner!!!

@incredibleTalk - something about it seemed off, maybe it was more the movie itself, than the actor... But he is a terrific actor and I would have been fine with it too, especially for continuity reasons. But Ruffalo does a great job, so its not a huge loss.

@MattBellissimo - ....since the first two fuk-ups(Terrance and Norton)...no one has left this MCU...they be SMART!!!!!

@MattBellissimo - Krasinski looks so goofy, which is the last thing Cap needs lol

@Kman - RDJ was not dead on really IMHO. Iron Man became RDJ rather than the other way around, but I wouldn't ask for anything different.
Kman
Kman - 8/24/2016, 9:07 AM
@RolandD - Well to be honest... neither is Cap. Cap is a little more serious and sanctimonious in the comics than the MCU version. But I will admit, RDJ has a lot more snark to him than his comic counter part. But like you said... I wouldn't change anything

@mutantsoldier2 - My only criticism with Evans is that his voice can be very nasally when he's giving his inspiring speeches, but other than that: he's perfect in the role.
