The release of Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a landmark for Marvel Studios. After six years of build up since The Avengers hit theatres, and a full decade since the first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released, a plan of enormous scale is finally about to hit its climax.
Seeing all the heroes we've come to know over the years all in one enormous movie is going to be pretty incredible, and Marvel is still planning on expanding. With Captain Marvel coming out next spring, the Marvel roster is going to get even bigger after Infinity War is released—well, depending on how many characters die in the fight against Thanos.
Infinity War is going to be filled to the brim with characters, and probably don't need any extras added. Even still, there have been rumors about Brie Larson's Captain Marvel showing up in this summer's epic team-up.
While the movie’s directors have denied that the character will show up in Infinity War, a new rumor suggests that Carol Danvers could make an appearance in the film. Some fans think that a True Believers one-shot comic that ties into the release of Infinity War might hint at Captain Marvel being in the film, but this does not seem particularly likely.
As previously mentioned, the movie is already going to include a ton of heroes, so many that it will be very difficult to give all of them a meaningful role. Adding another character into this mix is only going to make it harder to tie the story together.
One of the factors in favor of Captain Marvel appearing in the film is the fact that her own solo movie takes place in the 1990s. By establishing that Danvers was already Captain Marvel when the events of Infinity War unfold, aren’t the filmmakers obligated to include her in the movie? Not necessarily, since there are a ton of reasons that could potentially explain Danvers’ absence.
Captain Marvel could be busy on a mission in outer space during the battle against Thanos, and this is a pretty good excuse for a couple reasons. First off, it establishes that she has been doing things off-world, expanding the cosmic side of the MCU. Also, it explains why she hasn’t shown up during any of the other times when the fate of the world was at stake.
So if Carol Danvers is going to make an appearance in the movie (and she probably won’t), it will likely be a post-credits scene. This is the most reasonable way to include the character in the film, as a post-credits scene doesn’t necessarily have to take place after the events of the film it follows. This could set up not only her own solo film but also her likely appearance in Avengers 4.
