Kevin Feige Calls CAPTAIN MARVEL A "Unique And Inspiring" Origin; Teases Nick Fury's Status In The Film
While at the premiere for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige provided an update on Captain Marvel, teasing the origin of Carol Danvers and where Nick Fury is at when the film begins...
With Avengers: Infinity War about to hit theaters, which will begin the conclusion of 10 years’ worth of stories, it can be easy to forget that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still set to feature some new faces. Specifically, fans will be seeing Carol Danvers, a.k.a Captain Marvel, make her big screen debut next year.
Though plenty of fans are familiar with the character’s origin story in comics, it’s likely the hero’s story will differ in at least a few ways. Fortunately, Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige says the character’s MCU origin will be quite inspiring.
“You’re going to get the most powerful superhero we’ve ever introduced and what I think is one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories,” Feige told Variety at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere. While we’ve heard Feige comment on the hero’s power, this is the first time the studio head has referred to Danvers’ origin as being unique, which is certainly exciting considering how often superhero origins follow similar tropes.
Aside from commenting on the titular hero, Feige also discussed the movie’s 90’s setting and where Nick Fury is at since the movie takes place near the Cold War:
“Being able to tap into Carol Danvers story for the very first time — to bring that to the screen and tap into an era of the MCU we’ve never been in the ‘90s. To see a version of Nick Fury who has reached a point in his career where he thought the Cold War’s over and the best days are behind him”
That’s all intriguing information as it means the Nick Fury we see at the start of the film will be quite different from the one we see in films like The Avengers — aside from possibly having an extra eye — as he may be trying to settle down a bit after years of service. Of course, Feige also said that what happens to the character in Captain Marvel will set him on the path to where he is “19 films later.”
Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel will hit theaters March 8, 2019
