In the nearly 3 decades since the launch of Sandman, the series has become a favorite for readers seeking good stories beyond the superhero genre. The primary storyline concluded in 1996, however, there have been a number of prequel comics here and there over the years.

In honor of The Sandman's 30th anniversary and as a tribute to 25 years of Vertigo Comics, Neil Gaiman will spearhead the launch of new Sandman comics with the publication of The Sandman Universe #1 on August 8th. This will introduce spaces beyond the dreaming and new houses such as the House of Whispers.

Following the special, the following spinoff books will be launched: The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Books of Magic and Lucifer. Neil Gaiman will collaborate with Dan Watters, Si Spurrier, Nalo Hopkinson and Kat Howard in plotting these new additions to the Sandman Mythos. Some of the artists involved include Bilqus Everly and Jae Lee on covers.

Check out the video below of Neil Gaiman announcing the project:

More information will be revealed this weekend at the Vertigo Panel at Emerald City Comic Con on Saturday, March 3rd. We'll keep you posted on more details in the days ahead. Meanwhile, share your thoughts on more Sandman comics in the comments section.

What's the status of season two of American Gods??

Saw this earlier. I love Sandman, but it's not REALLY Sandman... I mean neither Morpheus or Daniel are actually involved in any of these series.

@RorMachine - I was a big fan of Morpheus amd his books. Some of the first books I read as an adult. Kind of got me back into reading regular comics as well. I stopped reading them when Daniel took over as Dream. Were those books decent?

@RorMachine - I actually like the fact that neither of those 2 characters are in it. Morpheus is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever read and I'm fine with how they concluded his arc -- the finality of it. To bring him back would, in my opinion, take the attention away from other compelling characters in this universe. I do look forward to seeing familiar faces like Death and Cain and Abel again.

@BR74 - Yeah that's also true... but it's been so long that I really wouldn't mind if they resurrected him.

@TomSolo - There aren't really a lot of stories featuring Daniel. He was only Dream for The Wake arc, and then he's in Overture and something else I think.

@RorMachine - In Endless Nights. Also shows up in JLA and JSA for a bit.

@KIRITO -

Well, his father was Dr. Fate and his grandparents on dad's side were the Hawks.

@RorMachine - He's in Dark Nights: Metal, right now.

I don't think they should ever "resurrect" Dream, though. But it could be cool if he is somehow reborn to live his arc all over again... in a new series of movie adaptations. Or animated DVDs or a TV series.

So the last one's clearly Harry Potter. So Harry Potter takes place in the Sandman universe? That's both ridiculous and makes a lot of sense.

Love his Sandman work and stoked he's bringing it back. The artwork in those is amazing, really brings something different to the table

I'm glad he's getting involved in all this. They would just go ahead and do it with or without him, so at least he's there safeguarding things and making sure that at least some good comes from it all.

And it's no new thing. There's been a million spin-offs of Sandman, outside of Gaiman's main canon.

But "The Sandman Universe"?! Sandman's not a universe! The realm of Dream of The Endless is a Multiversal Vibrational Realm that exists outside of The Bleed, the Speed Force Wall, or the any of the 52 known universes. It's a realm, not a universe. And I'm pretty sure that these books take place all around the multiverse, not just in The Dreaming, so that's a pretty dumb title, but whatever.

@GwenLantern - Semantics. The title is perfectly fine. Since the author himself refers to it as a Universe, I'm certain he has a pretty good idea of what the word means.
GwenLantern

@BR74 - Yeah, I guess he does. He's just using it wrong.
Maybe "The Sandman Creative Fictional Idea-Space" just wasn't catchy enough.

@GwenLantern - Ha ha ha! No, not catchy at all. Regardless of nomenclature, I'm eager to see what stories he and the other writers will come up with. The artwork looks promising too. I can't wait to see Yanick Paquette's work on this.

@BR74 - Me too. Don't know how much of it will be pure Gaiman, though, but even just a little Gaiman is better than none at all.

What no Dave Mckean covers? Those were some great things to behold. I can't believe it's been 30 years already. Still trying to finish off my collection of the Sandman TPBs.

I don't care what he is writing, it's Neil Gaiman, so I'm all in!
His Eternals and Marvel 1602 are pretty underrated/underappreciated imo.
