As part of their series of interview with "The New 52" creative teams, IGN Comics had the chance to catch up with Geoff Johns about his work on Green Lantern, one of DC's flagship titles. Below are a few excerpts from their chat, but be sure to head on over to the site by clicking the link below to read the interview in full, and click HERE to check out my review of Green Lantern #1.

On The Decision To Make Sinestro A Member Of The Green Lantern Corps:

Actually this was always the long-term plan. If you look back, I forget which issue it is, but I did a little bit of a flash forward and showed some events in the future. One of them is Sinestro with the ring. It's actually in the book. It was one of the earlier issues where I planted it. It was really subtle so it's hard to see.

On What The Future Holds For Hal Jordan And Sinestro:

I want them both to take a really good look at themselves. Because when Sinestro has that green ring on he's forced to look at himself. What he used to be, what he became, what that ring means -- does it mean anything? And the fact that the arc explores Sinestro having to go back to Korugar to take care of the mess he made. Will he admit that he made a mess? How does Korugar react to him as a Green Lantern again? I think as Sinestro says, he doesn't need redemption. Redemption is too simple for him. He's much more complex than that. And Hal's going to find out that he's much more complex than he lets on. Hal just doesn't like to stop. Hal's biggest problem is that if he stops to think about who he is and what he is doing, it's going to mess him up pretty good. He's always moved and jumped and gone into the fray just because there is so much stuff that he doesn't deal with, that he doesn't want to deal with, and so long as he keeps moving he thinks he can avoid it all. And that's all subconscious to him but that's really what the story is about; taking a good look at yourself. What is good? What is bad? How relative is it? Is redemption even real? What does it even mean?

On How Hal's Relationships Will Differ With The Guardians If He Gets His Ring Back:

Nothing will be the same between Hal and anybody from here on out.

On How Much Longer Geoff Johns Plans To Write The Book For:

I was just talking to Brian Cunningham, he's my editor on Green Lantern, and right now I have enough stories to fill up probably another 2 to 3 years at least.

On What We Can Expect To See In The Coming Months In Green Lantern:

Just that we are taking the characters to places they've never been before. That we'll shed a light on a side of them that maybe some of us never knew they had, and at the same time we'll still have that great cosmic action and cosmic conspiracies and mysteries. One of the future arcs is called The Secret of the Indigo Tribe, where we learn all about who founded them and what they're really about. We'll be exploring a lot of different aspects of the Green Lantern mythology, but the whole time there will be a far more focused beam in on Sinestro and Hal as characters before anything else.

@mbembet Neither is Batman, INC. Hence Batwing.

He's so good at comic writing... this is my only regret about not getting Green Lantern. Not being able to read what he writes.

Oh well! At least I have his Justice League work to look forward to.

Mark Strong no matter how bad the movie was he was great in the role of Sinestro. feel sorry for him tho.

The movie got screwed over by too much studio interference. It's why Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are so great: Nolan asked for complete creative control.

If WB hadn't interfered, we'd have gotten a great Green Lantern movie.

@CaptainTall

u do realise Geoff Johns was also involved in Green Lantern movie aswell.

also Green Lantern powers to the general public is just silly. a guy with a power ring that make anything out of green seems to silly. Green Lantern needs to be reinvented on the big screen.
CaptainTall
CaptainTall - 9/17/2011, 7:28 AM
@Jazzman

Yes I do realize that. Studio. Interference. Kills even the best of possible movies.

It isn't silly, it's actually really cool. It just wasn't handled right.

But I'm not gonna lie, the movie did turn me off on all things Green Lantern.

Geoff Johns is a genius, and the reason why I started reading DC (besides the Batman comics).
But, yeah, the movie sucked big time...

Fiiiinally an explanation about the Indigo tribe. All I know so far is that the leader was a prisoner at one point.

@N

actually instead of having him make silly stupid objects like a toy car and etc. just having him shoot lasers or create a force field.

@Nephillim

Iron Man and Thor is so much easier to work on film and the concept of these characters aint silly compare to Green Lantern. Green Lantern create silly green objects he sound like a comedy character.

@Intruder

it is outdated. Green Lantern needed to reinvented on film.

@ EarthToOlu

i just think it would be better if he just concentrated on one book & not three.

@ mrnofear

did i upset you,geoff johns is a good writer he peaked with the sinestro corp war if you ask me & he is slowly getting worse.

as for ed brubaker you'd love him working on dc books,he is the best writer in comics & his made captain america one of the must read titles every month.

I am sick and [frick]ing tired of you Gl-hating marvel loving asswipes. I get it, the Gl movie sucked. Dont blame Dc or the character. If you blame the character for the movie, then most of the x-men suck, spiderman sucks cuz of spiderman 3, fantastic 4 sucks, and hulk sucks because of his first movie. And GL needs to be reinvented for film? Liek what? Make it "realistic"? This isnt [frick]ing Batman! The movie sucking isnt the fault of the character or the mythos, it sucked cuz of a poor script and worse editing! Same could be said about a lot of movies about Marvel characters. Does Spidey need to be reinvented? What about Phoenix? You guys all complained about the changes to those characters, but we need to go out of our way to change GL cuz he "some dumb dc character"? To hell with all of you

The only silly part about Green Lanterns powers is the old vulnerability to yellow thing. I believe the comics dropped that. His powers can come off as sillys looking depending on how they are used. ie creating a giant matchbox race track to stop an out of control car for example. But really Lanterns "powers" are among the coolest and most original of all the comic heroes.

Haha. Of course all the marvel fanboys hate Johns, he made DC all kinds of money with his Green Lantern run!

@Intruder- sorry, im just so sick and [frick]ing tired of marvelites. "waaah dc characters are hard to do on screen" bullshit. thats an excuse
jazzman
jazzman - 9/17/2011, 11:20 AM
@Dev7

a Wonder Woman movie can work on film if done right. also a Shazam film would be great if they take not of films like Big meets a Superhero movies.

@jointron33

no fricking excuse Green Lantern was going to be hard to translate on film. thats a fact this is nothing to do with marvel vs dc crap. geez i found it hard that Marvel is trying to make a Ant-Man movie.

@Intruder

it make me laugh at some of these people. when we dislike a DC character or a DC film we a branded as marvelites LOL. i like both DC and Marvel and other comic book companies. but if i dont like how a DC character is people cry we are haters lol.

jointron33 - 9/17/2011, 11:25 AM
@jazzman theres nothing hard about adapting gl. its as simple as writing a good story and gigivng decent screen time to characters and developing them, things that if implemented would have made the gl movie the movie it needed to be. its basically a cop movie in space with thought based weapons. not hard at all.
and im sorry for playin the marvelite card, but if you dont like the character, why are you even on the article? that to me defies simple logic

Oh, huh. I changed my mind at the comic store today and I picked up Green Lantern #1. It wasn't anything spectacular or anything, but it also wasn't terrible. It was pretty good, I'll be getting #2 when it comes out.
jazzman
jazzman - 9/17/2011, 12:17 PM
@Intruder

I KNOW RIGHT (in ryan reynold voice lol) :P

@jointron33

i can have a opinion on the article since DC cant do sh!t outside Batman and Superman. also i already know Green Lantern is basically a cop movie in space. thats cool and all but his powers is still abit corny on screen. its cool in the comics but i said from day one his powers will look silly on the big screen. he can create anything out of a ring really to me it should be limited to shooting out cool lasers, creating a power shield and certain weapons. Green Lantern should of been like Tron Legacy style imo.

oh another thing the suit should of been a actually suit and add cgi on top later.
jointron33
jointron33 - 9/17/2011, 12:26 PM
@jazzman so gl shud b a lame "realistic" character?
and btw, this article isnt even about the damn movie
jazzman
jazzman - 9/17/2011, 12:38 PM
@jointron33

did i fricking said he should be realistic character. if he was a realisitic character he would not fly to space and sh!t. dont try and pull that "realistic" cr*p on me. but gl powers do need to stay away from the corny element on film. well true its not about the movie but ign interview Geoff Johns about the comic but i wish they asked him about the movie cause he was involved with the process.
