COMICS: J.H Williams III Announces Departure From BATWOMAN Over Editorial Decisions

J.H Williams III will be departing the fantastic Batwoman series after issue 26 and gave a heartfelt goodbye on his blog explaining that DC made last-minute changes that derailed important plans for the character and more...

In another interesting case of a comic company not allowing a scribe to go where they planned, J.H Williams III has decided to drop out of writing Batwoman after Issue 26 due to editorial's interesting decisions. They told the team to scrap the original ending to their current arc, which would have drastically defined the future of the character and also decided that Kate and Maggie can not be shown getting married. The book's team feels that due to these decisions, the stories will not be as good as they could be. An excerpt from the blog post states: "We were told to ditch plans for Killer Croc’s origins; forced to drastically alter the original ending of our current arc, which would have defined Batwoman’s heroic future in bold new ways; and, most crushingly, prohibited from ever showing Kate and Maggie actually getting married." said Williams.

Batwoman: Vol 3 World's Finest is out September 18th in all comic book stores.

hmm... so DC are not only bossy but they're also homophobic. good to know. Frick DC I'm not really either DC or Marvel fan so i'm not swayed to either team. But knowing that they won't allow gay marriage is fricking stupid.

So they would allow her to ask Maggie to marry her, would allow them to arrange the marriage but..not show them getting married? And then they tell them that long arc you been working on, scrap it and ignore it because we don't like it now that its ending.

Huh. That's a lot of what.

I bet over at Marvel they have an "It's been -- Days Since DC Comics Frakked Up" counter hanging somewhere.

And it just got set back to zero.

Nice move DC...piss off your good people & keep giving work to Rob "dipshit" Liefeld.

Wow this sucks. Sad to see him leave the book. I hope he'll do a series for other publishers to have some freedom when writing his stuff.

On the other hand.. Looking forward to Sandman Overture! He'll be sharing art duties with Dave McKean. Can't wait!

I love DC but their editors are [frick]ing assholes. I was pissed when they [frick]ed over Rucka but still read Batwoman cause JHW, and cause I love the character.

Now they've canned Williams and I feel no need to read Batwoman any more. They need to get their act together. I try not to be biased but DC by far has the best writers and artists (Marvel's guys are good here and there but it's not even on the same level) and based on how they're treating them I don't think that'll last long.

Pretty soon all they'll have left are Snyder Lemire and Johns, and while they're phenominal, there's so many other great writers that deserve the respect those three get.

The art was gorgeous, but the story was really dragging and going nowhere. The series needs a Green Arrow level kick in the ass.
And DC's not homophobic. Batwoman is one of the most publicly gay superheroes in comics. Having a Bat character be openly gay was a huge risk for DC and it paid off. She had a relationship with Renee Montoya aka The Question previous to her current relationship. To say they haven't had good LGBT characters is a bullshit accusation.
If they don't want Batwoman to get married, then fine. If Superman and Batman can't be married why should Batwoman be married? Superhero marriages rarely work, anyway. You run out of road with that kind relationship. Maggie would end up getting killed or they'd just separate somewhere down the road because Kate refuses to give up the vigilante lifestyle. You can see where that road is leading.

All the best to Williams, though.

Psht, look at SnapperCarr as he tries to pick on something that's actually good. You know what they say, don't insult something if you haven't tried it yourself.

Ah tad disappointed that they won't allow Kate and Maggie to be married, I mean, why can't one Bat character have something good in their life? But I was more upset that they were told to ditch plans for Killer Croc’s origins, if there was one character in the New 52 I wanted to see the origin of, it was Killer Croc.
I can't tell if the Editors at DC are discriminative or just late to everything. The second part seems far more realistic with everything that goes down at DC anyway. As 2gold pointed out, So they would allow her to ask Maggie to marry her, would allow them to arrange the marriage but..not show them getting married? And then they tell them that long arc you been working on, scrap it and ignore it because we don't like it now that its ending. , I can just feel the editors loading out things when they're a month and a bit behind in their comic reading. I mean, it's not as if it's their job at all… lucky bastards.

what the fck dc comics, what the actual fck
they're not only not allowing them to show the marriage, one of jh's twitter replies reads: "Not wanting to be inflammatory, only factual- We fought to get them engaged, but were told emphatically no marriage can result"
which is bullshit, i'm so disappointed

also @PenditaMarah you're an homophobe i hope you feel proud of being such a dick :D

There was actually lesbian sex in Batwoman, but I agree that she shouldn't be getting married, especially to a woman that wants her to hang up the cape.

These marriages always end up in break ups or death.

Bad move DC editorial!! You've alienated one the best creators in the business. Not to mention what happened with Greg Rucka on the same title. Batwoman WAS one of the classiest acts in comics.

Guys, most of the time marrying a Character leads to people loosing interest. It has nothing to do with DC being "Homophobic" geez, lighten up people... not everything is about politics. If DC was "homophobic" they wouldn't have Batwoman be gay or allow her to have a relationship and they wouldn't have turned Alan Scott guy (which I was against because I love the character, I love the Golden Age... that does not mean I hate that they changed him because I hate gays.) Lighten up people... go ahead and be upset at the editors, yeah, they may want too much control. Yeah they may be stifling their writers creativity. but this is not a display of homophobia!

I can see the marriage thing only in the sense that as stated earlier that these rarely work in the vigilante world; yet still they could have pulled it together someway. Plus this book needs to find a way to shorten some of their story lines or stream line them or they will lose readership.

And so it ends. Last remaining DC title on my pull list. More money for something else now. Don't really care whether there was a marriage or not, but rather that it was not the creative team's decision.

Honestly I thought it was silly to have Bat woman be gay but if you're scared to follow through then you should never have gone that direction to begin with. I'm also not a big fan of staying the Bat to an ever extending group of characters. I say kill the Batwoman and the Batwing and anyone else outside Batman, Nightwing and Batgirl and call it a day. These three should be a team unto their own and that's that. New batcave and car and all sorts of gadgets. A kick ass and take no prisoners attitude. ......

I can't help feeling that DC might be against marriages, period. It's pretty rare that a married hero works in a popular solo title. Especially within the Batman Family, ongoing relationships are difficult enough let alone a marriage. Sadly, a marriage between two long-standing lovers is often seen as jumping the shark.

I'm hoping that it wasn't because of the fact that they're lesbians. JH Williams said himself that DC isn't anti-gay.

It really sucks to see him go, but hopefully he'll move onto something with the freedom he deserves!

What is it with these morons running Marvel and DC? Why do they think that marriage can't make for good drama? They just want their characters to stay in a perpetual state of adolescence and never have to worry about what real adults deal with in the real world.

Did Joe Quesada kidnap the executives at DC and brainwash them into believing in his stance against comic book characters getting married?

It's cool of him to ask people not to drop the book over this but, honestly, JHW III has always been the only reason to read Batwoman. I hope he takes his talents to Marvel.
SWelch

@ Battabing If marraiges don't work in comic it is because of bad or lazy writing along with bad editing. Every writer seems to think that in order to have character development with a married superhero the spouse has to die or at least leave the hero. And that is just lazy thinking.

If you want an example of a marriage that works in comics just look and Reed and Sue Richards. Yes I know both of them are heroes but the marriage is one if not the best one in comics. But Marvel could have had them divorce years ago for conflict(though they have seperated a couple of times) and still work together. But Marvel has decided to make it work and stick. I think DC could do the same and should.

Or all you have to do is look at real life at any person who is a Law Officer and there plenty of them who have great solid marriages. Yes law enforcers do have a higher percentage of divorces but that doesn't take away for them the ones that work. And if it works in real life then editors and writers can make it work in the comic world.

It would be nice if they let them do their ending in a one-shot, OGN or mini set on another Earth. I hate it when classic, finite runs are denied something as essential to storytelling as an organic resolution.

see, it may be that dc is against the marriage storyline opposed to them being homophobic in general, sure. but would they have given the marriage sl a chance if batwoman wasn't gay? probably. it just feels like they're against the entire thing, which is ridiculous. batwoman isn't a character that would change drastically whether she's married or not, kate's story has nothing to do with that so it wouldn't change a thing nor it would've made people lose interest, it's not like they were pushing to get bruce married who's womanizing ways are so characteristic of him. if anything, most fans that i've seen around were loving that kate was going to get married and they were waiting to see it, besides it would've been a great move for dc, have a big issue where two lesbians get married. but no. i always felt like dc hated batwoman tbh, she's such a great character, the book is so fcking good, but they never promote her. it's sad.
