COMICS: Paul Levits Discusses DC's EARTH-2 AND WORLD'S FINEST

Arguably the most exciting of the 6 new books announced by DC in the 'Second Wave' of the new 52, the writer of World's Finest sheds some light on the company's parallel Earth concept.

Speaking to Newsarama, writer Paul Levits shares some details about the upcoming Earth-2 and World's Finest titles.

Question: The description of this series is that the characters are stranded on a parallel earth and are trying to get home to Earth 2. How does Earth 2 work in the New 52 universe? Is it still part of 52 Earths?

LEVITS: "Most of that is James Robinson's territory, and I will leave that to him. My turf is to look at these two women who are interestingly complex human beings, reacting to an extraordinarily disruptive situation in very different ways.

And yet they're good friends, and they're surviving — maybe arguably thriving — in an alien world, with each others' help.

But their priorities are very different. Their approach to what's happening to them is very different. And that's cool territory to explore.

These are kids I love playing with, and yet they're in a new form, so I can do a new, more modern take on them.

The joy of any book where you're taking characters who come from our two core character families is to counterpoint between them. And the neat thing, when you're playing that not with Superman and Batman but Huntress and Power Girl, is that they're freer characters, in some ways, than the iconic characters. You can develop more nuances. They stand on their own a little bit more. And you can hopefully make that a more interesting journey, since they don't have to support eight titles each. So you have the room to tell their story.

But we also have plenty of stuff that blows up, plenty of drama and action in the process of introducing a new, modern take on these two great characters."

Question: You mentioned that you were planting seeds in your Huntress mini. Were you setting this book up?

LEVITS: "Pieces of it. The things that are set up in the mini-series are really the ambiguities to make people wonder — and there's been this lovely, fierce online debate about Helena Wayne/Helena Bertinelli. And "is it taking place on Earth 2?" or "is it taking place on the New 52 Earth?" And "oh, she says she's more of a cat person than a dog person, so what does that mean?" You know? Going back and forth.

It's kind of beautiful to see people get involved that much and care that much about the characters just as you're wrapping up the story.

So there are a few things like that being set up."

Question: That name Bertinelli in there is a fun tease, but this is Helena Wayne, right?

LEVITS: "We will ultimately know that she's Helena Wayne of Earth 2, but whether Bruce will know that she's Helena Wayne, or how Bruce or Selina Kyle will come to know that and react to that, we'll see. I'm still working out all the dramatic potential in it. Obviously, there's enormous pent up possibility in those moments, and you want to make all that drama work. And you don't want to do all that in issue #1, panel #1. You want to take people on an interesting ride.

It's going to be very connected both to Earth 2 and to the New 52 Earth. In a sense, it's the bridge book between the two. It should be a very rich, exciting experience, if we do it right."

Question: We've seen Karen Starr in [the now canceled] Mr. Terrific, but only briefly. Is she like the Power Girl we've know in the past, before the relaunch?

LEVITS: "I think she'll be a little bit different from what you've seen in the past. I'm building off the facts that are established about her in Mr. Terrific. I'm trying to pick up on things that happened in those issues and connect them in properly. But there's a lot more to her story.

She's got a very defined sense of mission about going home. She needs to get back there. She feels that world needs her there. And hopefully that will play out in a very interesting fashion.

These two gals got dumped here in a confusing and challenging circumstance, in a world that's a lot like theirs, but not the same. And each of them has different sets of things they want to do as a result."

My question is how do you avoid all the confusion created by multiple earths that resulted in the DCnU in the first place?

Is Earth-2 going to be to DC as Ultimate Universe is to Marvel???

I can't wait to see the return of the REAL Karen Star/Power Girl interacting in this new universe, especially now that the characters are all changed up. I know these two books may be joining my reads. Although Robinson is writing EARTH 2 and he made Cry for Justice which he killed an innocent child for shock value but he also did what I heard was a fantastic run on the Star Man series, so I'm conflicted by that aspect.

I like that DC is allowing for some old school writing and art to make a comeback. That would be like if JRSR came back to Marvel and did some of the books....which would be AWESOME but he's retired. I can't wait for the first teaser images of both titles

The claim that Robinson killed a child for "shock value" is complete and utter nonsense. There was a method to that story. Something had to happen to push Green Arrow over the line, causing him to kill Prometheus, thus distancing himself from the JLA. I don't understand the hate on "Cry for Justice." That book is absolutely solid, and it was one of the first stories that really made me analyze Green Arrow. What they're doing with him now is nothing as complex, and it's just plain boring.

That said, I'm excited to see how James Robinson handles Earth-2, and I'm also pumped to see which characters are actually members of the JSA. I'm crossing my fingers for The Sandman to show up if he isn't already a planned main character.

@NoRegrets: You're thinking of Earth 3, if that still exists. Earth three is the earth with the evil counterparts of everyone.

@ComicCritic

I read the article, and I understand your position. However, I don't agree. It'd be silly to ignore that heroes have loved ones who'd be put into harm's way. By that rationale, Identity Crisis is also a terrible story.

another article but this one is on Identity Crisis

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/blogs/latest/entry/identity-crisis-rape-as-drama

These elements should not be used when it comes to telling a STORY especially since the writers are in control of these Universes, yet they continue to add in these elements that have little to no bearing on the story. THEY ARE placed in their for "shock value" they want readers to spread the word so they could get more readers. A proper way would by like in Kingdom Come, where the death's HAD meaning and affected the story after the events. This isn't an attack against DC, I love DC comics, I just hate it when a mainstream company sinks so low to pull the "kill the kid" or "rape" card like they did in those two stories.

The Bat Family & The Supes Family always team up. Batman/Superman, Batgirl/Supergirl, Robin/Superboy, and Huntress/Powergirl

@Alucard.....true. My favorite moment of all that was Dick Grayson teaming up with Power Girl when Grayson was still Batman. It was a fun nod and wink at the Supes and Bat team-ups. I like it that Power Girl is taller than Grayson. He is at perfect motorboat level

@comiccritic... it seems you missed a lot of the point of Identity Crisis and how the events following the rape were affected by it..

you should probably read it again... Identity Crisis was a fantastic story, not just a 'shock value' plot point.. but rather using a real life trauma to show a much more vulnerable and human side to the DC superheroes

@Blind....its so much about the "shock value" plot point....its that it has NO REASON to be in the story. Sue dies in the end, why bother even showing us those panels. She could have hinted at it with her dying breath. Telling Ray that Dr. Light raped her but not outright saying rape. This plot point is like keying a persons car and then setting the car on fire after.....your only adding insult to injury. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking DC for doing this, if Marvel did a story that involved rape, believe me I would judge them just as harshly. My problem is when something bears NO POINT to the plot. Lian's Death and Sue's rape are two moments that don't need to exist, they don't progress their respected stories, they bring them to a screeching halt. They are trying to get readers to see how "EDGY" they can really get. When it comes to the MAINSTREAM, some lines can be crossed but crossing the line involving the death of a child for no other reason to get readers or allowing a rape scene to be drawn, you are being hardcore....your pathetic
