DC Comics Ditches Superman's "Truth, Justice, And The American Way" For A New 21st Century Motto

Several years ago, DC Comics came under fire when Superman seemingly turned his back on "the American way." Now, though, the Man of Steel is ditching his classic mantra for one that's a little more modern.

The news continues rolling in from DC FanDome, but this could be among the most "controversial" announcements. DC Comics Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee have revealed that both the company and Superman are getting a new mission statement deemed to be suitable for the 21st Century.

In place of "Truth, Justice and the American Way" is "Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow."

The company says that this is meant "to better reflect the storylines that we are telling across DC and to honor Superman’s incredible legacy of over 80 years of building a better world."

It's worth noting that this "catchphrase" didn't actually originate in the comic books; instead, it was introduced in the "Superman" radio serial in the 1940s. From there, the motto - used at the time to support the American troops fighting during World War II - found its way into film, television, and the source material. However, it hasn't really been used in a significant way for quite some time.

Superman Returns poked fun at it way back in 2006, while recent comic books have also moved away from it in recent years. Whether that's because it just doesn't work in this day and age is up for debate, though it's worth noting that the Man of Steel is a superhero who now watches over the entire universe, never mind just America or even the world. Still, this is bound to upset some fans.

The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Clark Kent's son, Jon Kent, is going to be portrayed as openly bisexual moving forward (he's serving as the current Superman on Earth).
