This past week, Dc comics issued a mildly controversial press release - After more than 70 years, Superman and Wonder Woman will finally become a couple.
There is a certain logic to that; aside from being compatible on a power level (they both can, fly, fight, and bench press a tank), it’s also a fantasy that’s been turned over in the brains of “fanboys” forever. So there’s definitely logic in giving the masses what they want. I have to wonder though, which character benefits more from the exposure of such a fictitious tryst: Superman’s recent adventures have been critically panned in his Self titled comic book, despite starting from scratch with DC’s “New 52” (the company wide “reboot” of ALL their comic titles.)
Apparently, DC editorial can’t seem to decide what they want to do with him even though they have superstar writer Grant Morrison on his other title Action comics. Apparently, according to George Perez former writer of the new 52 Superman title – there was no coordination between what the two Superman titles are doing. A desperate house cleaning is in order especially if the company hopes to benefit from “Man of Steel”, the new Superman movie that will premiere next summer.
On the other hand , Wonder Woman is having a controversial but critically acclaimed run of stories since the New 52 revamp. However her mass media presence has been virtually non- existent for years –save for the occasional appearance in a Justice League cartoon or failed television pilot (I’m looking at YOU David E Kelly.) Could this corporate sanctioned union be exactly the press she needs? How can this possibly affect the status quo /DC universe in an permanent way? Will this mean we'll get a 'Man of Steel' cameo for Princess Diana? Or is this all a cynical cash grab with the illusion of actual change?
Chime is with your thoughts...
