There's been no very little said regarding the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's
Death: The High Cost of Living since 2008. Back then, during the 20th Anniversary celebration for
The Sandman series, the fan favorite author seemed positive that the wheels were steadily turning on the project:
"New Line is very much interested in making it," Gaiman told MTV News,
"once the dust settles. That will probably happen, unless it doesn’t. The delight in doing ‘Death: The High Cost of Living’ is that it’s already a movie-shaped story. And it’s not even the fact that it’s Death from the Sandman comics. It’s just this lovely little story about a boy who’s depressed and a girl who says she’s Death, and the day they spend together."
The concept behind the story is that once every century, Death is incarnated as a mortal woman for a single day to experience what she takes from others. Since then, there has been little word on
Death and Me, the working title for the film based upon the
Death: The High Cost of Living series.
Just today, Neil Gaiman updated his verified Twitter account with the following:
The WETA he's referring to is the esteemed, visual effects studio that has worked on such films as
Avatar, District 9, The Chronicles of Narnia, Hellboy and
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The 'Guillermo' in question is none other than director Guillermo Del Toro; who is no stranger to comic book adaptations. He has already directed two Hellboy movies and the Blade sequel.
Though the director's slate appears to be full for the next year and a half, with four films currently in pre-production including the two part LOR prequel
The Hobbit, he may be the guiding light that Gaiman is looking for.
This might not be a giant step in bringing one of The Endless to the silver screen, it is definitely a move in a positive direction.
