AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #35 Teases The Return Of Peter Parker's Greatest Enemy - SPOILERS

Amazing Spider-Man #35 arrived in comic book stores earlier today and with Peter Parker still possessed by the Green Goblin's sins, one of the wall-crawler's greatest enemies has finally returned...

Zeb Wells' Amazing Spider-Man run certainly appears to have divided opinions, but today's issue #35 was just as huge as Marvel Comics has been teasing.

It was Nick Spencer who resurrected the Sin-Eater and, at the behest of Kindred, we later saw him purge Norman Osborn of his sins, setting the former Green Goblin on a righteous path. Redeemed, he'd go on to rebuild Oscorp and found an unexpected ally in Peter Parker before becoming the heroic Gold Goblin.

His evils didn't just vanish from the world, though, and the sinister Beyond Corporation later got their hands on the concentrated physical manifestation of those sins and injected them into Queen Goblin. Those were later removed by Kraven the Hunter and placed inside a spear - meant for Norman - to restore the Green Goblin to his old self. Instead, it ended up being plunged into Spider-Man's soul.

As a result, we've since seen the web-slinger head down a dark path, burying Kraven alive and targeting Mary Jane Watson and her new boyfriend Paul.

In today's Amazing Spider-Man #35, the darkness overcomes Peter and he heads down an increasingly twisted path before Norman, who has allied with Kraven to create a new spear which will remove and absorb those sins, intervenes.

They're removed from a remorseful web-slinger and Kraven vows to magically seal and bury the spear so the Goblin's sins will forever be lost to the world. However, right at the end of the issue, we learn it didn't work and Norman's sins have returned to him.

He's trying to keep the Goblin at bay, but a laugh escapes, and it's clear now there's only so long before this villain makes his full-blown return. With Marvel Comics saying this sets up the next 24 issues, we're guessing it will culminate in the Amazing Spider-Man #60/#953

The 1000th issue is looming and we're expecting that to be a big one. Whether the Green Goblin will be involved remains to be seen, though most fans are hoping the publisher will take this opportunity to restore Peter and MJ's marriage after years of them being kept apart. We're not going to get our hopes on that front, though.

And with that, the statut-quo returns.

I wonder when was the last time I was sincerely hyped by a daring development with long-lasting implications in The Amazing Spider-man.

Even now, they're trying once again to separate Peter and MJ for good. We know it won't last. She is far too popular to be put under a bus or something. They already tried (she was killed off and they tried to replace her by Gwen's cousin, it didn't work and no one even remembers that Gwen has a cousin. They tried to annul the marriage and to replace her with Carlie, NO ONE cares or even remembers about Carlie while MJ did eventually return as Peter's main love interest...), and everytime they tried to push her out of Spidey's life, destiny brought her back in by overwhelming popular demand.

I'm pretty sure this time this "MJ" will turn out to be an actress, a clone, a water clone or whatever, or this development to be retcon out of existence entirely, and she WILL eventually return again as Spidey's love interest.

@Amuro -

Let me get this straight : I love the MJ character and she is far too important in Spidey's life to be replaced. No other female character has as much bagage as her in Spidey's life, even before they married. She was the first one to discover who he really was and to keep it a secret even from himself (so the first person he could EVER trust). She was also the first person to be truly there for him when Gwen died and to not leave him (the first sign that she was not the airhead she was pretending to be), and ultimately she has the most complete and well-rounded character of the whole Spidey supporting cast, second only to Spidey himself.

I still think there are more stories to tell with this character, once Marvel will stop trying to make her leave the series (something they have tried more than once and that NEVER worked in the past) and accept that she is as important to the Spider-man mythos as May Parker.

Honestly, part of the reason why Spider-man stories are not as successful or impacting anymore has also something to do with Marvel no longer allowing the character to grow up, to evolve, trying to keep him in a statut-quo (the celibate super hero whose relationships never work out because of his double-life) that worked for a time but who ended up making him bland. MJ was the only one with who a relationship DID work despite the many hardships, and that was interesting rather than seeing him in a succession of failed relationships that NO ONE cares about.

The only Sin-Eater I remember was the one who killed Jean DeWolff. I loved that era of Spidey comics.

Remember kids, don't hate villains for being evil. Instead, stab them with a spear in the hopes their evil will come out of their bodies and they'll end up an ordinary member of society.
