COMICS: Axel Alonso Talks Post AVENGERS VS. X-MEN Marvel "Reboot" Speculation

After the announcement that the Phoenix's return to Earth would bring about a clash between The Avengers and X-Men, speculation that Marvel may be planning a DC style reboot have run rampant. Here's what the Editor-in-Chief has to say.

Talking to Comic Book Resources in their regular "Axel-In-Charge" interview, Marvel's E-i-C commented on the success of the DC reboot and refused to confirm or deny the rampant fan speculation that Avengers Vs. X-Men will result in some sort of similar relaunch. It is of course highly unlikely that this will happen (Marvel's sales are already closing in on the post "New 52" numbers DC are achieving) but check out what Alonso had to say here.

"Look, if the DC reboot had tanked, it would have been bad for everybody. With the talent associated with that reboot, the unprecedented investment they made in promoting it and the incentives they provided to retailers to order deep, they had to hit big. They got a strong launch and I give them credit. I enjoyed several of their titles -- especially the Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo "Batman" and Jeff Lemire & Travel Foreman's "Animal Man."

"Our industry needs Marvel and DC to be healthy and competitive. While DC's recent moves won't inspire us to veer off course with our publishing plan, they do inspire us to bring our A-game. I'm not only excited about "AvX," but where it leaves the Marvel Universe -- the creative opportunities it creates. There's been a lot of speculation online as to whether this will lead to a reboot, and I'm not going to fuel that one way or another! [Laughter], but I will say that, just like "Civil War" transformed the Marvel Universe, so too will "AvX."

While the convoluted DC Universe benefited from a reboot, it's hard to imagine the necessity for such a move by Marvel. To read the rest of the interview, be sure to click on the link below to head on over to the site and sound off with your thoughts below.

Glad Marvel's not doing that stupid shit that gave DC a half point margin sales more its first month. LOL.

Its kinda entertaining to see heroes fight themselves, much different than always going after the bad guys.

I still think DC bungled Superman in the new 52, and there are a lot of less-than-inspiring books, but overall it was a good move. I just wish they would have gotten rid of all of the every-color-of-the-rainbow lanterns. It's clutter.( It's like a Dan Brown novel: "I'll just make up a new Macguffin every page!") Marvel has that same problem right now. They don't need a reboot, though, they just need the patience to tell a good story. The Marvel Universe didn't use to be a Michael Bay film. Actually, they'd do good to take it in the direction of the MCU. That's what's made the Daredevil relaunch so refreshing and the best Marvel book of the year.

Interesting he didn't say yay or nay though... lol... Personally while in a few years I'd say that Marvel could use a reboot, I'd at least let them finish AvX, and maybe the Age of Ultron before I even thought about a reboot. The biggest thing that why I'd like a reboot is because the messed up Spider-man soooo bad and there is no way to go back really. Which is sad because Marvel was doing most everything right till "One More Day" happened. It's sad.

a reboot is not needed, maybe in a few years.marvel really has to sort out the spider-man titles & everything would be cool.

I don't know. I'm not too keen on the thought of "rebooting" many of Marvel's comics and characters. I mean, I grew up with some of Marvel greatest characters and comic books, and the idea of "rebooting" them isn't something that I'm a big fan of. But, if there comes a time where Marvel needs to reboot, then, well, they have to.

Stay EPIC, my friends!

They sorta kinda need to tone down the "...And Nothing Will Ever Be The Same!" kind-of speak. They always seem to be promoting something that's gonna be a real game-changer.... and then it seems like it kinda fizzles.

From the Skrull Invasion to the Civil War... did anything really change? Aren't Cap, IM, and Thor still kinda buddies? Thor is only gonna be dead for a few minutes, as we all know. Hell, when he killed the Thing in Fear Itself that DID look kinda cool.... but then they brought Thing back in the very same issue!

They say these things "transform" the Marvel Universe, but all they do is 'transform' Wolverine from one magazine to another. Kinda shameless marketing. And like some have noted here earlier, it would be really nice if they just got back to good storytelling & dropped all the bells & whistles & gimmicks.

more like dc has copied marvel, the new dc reboot is what marvel did years ago with the ultimate universe.the only difference is marvel has two universes while dc has the one.

Thank GOD reboot the X-Men... No other comic movie needs a reboot as much as that one. I don’t even care if this last movie was ok, they Fu%*ed up that series so bad a reboot is in order. I would rather have an ok movie with everything comic correct than some sh*t director’s visionary art piece of dog crap like we always get with X-men movies!

I like his enthusiasm, but this is predictable, has been done, and feels desperate/ forced. They battle, no one stays dead (if anyone dies), some evil (new or old)lurks in the midst- watching and waiting while they fight, and they realize it's stupid and come together while one of them jumps ship.... Oh, and I also see Prof X returning as a great evil villain... or not. Does anyone really care? This is unimportant eye candy. Marvel is the new comic-strip club...

Well said, in every yearly event they always say the same thing, "and things will never be the same again"

Events build and build in each issue of these world changing mini series but just fizzle out at the end, Secret Invasion is a perfect example of that.

And when the dust settles things pretty much go back to status qou. No wonder the comics industry is doing so bad with all of these superficial and pointless gimmicks, people are not as stupid as these comic execs think.

They should respect the readers more and not be so lazy and try to grab an easy, quick buck. Sit down, put some effort in, give us good quality stories and only then will they actually make some money.

Thats a real win win for both the readers and the comic industry, we get comics that we enjoy and they get the money. People have no problem dishing out money if tehy feel its worth it.

I like his enthusiasm, but this is very predictable. They battle, someone dies (or returns from death), a villain watches in the shadows and plots his takeover, they realize the fight is stupid and come together against a greater threat. Or not. I can even see Professor X returning as an elite villain. Does anyone even care anymore? These stories have become a group of irrelevant pages of dialog full of eye candy. Marvel is the new comic-strip club...

Wasn't Marvel's Ultimates line a sort of DC reboot before DC ever rebooted?

Still give the promotional and financial success DC has had with the reboot, it will be hard for Marvel not to follow suit in some way. And the comic book game has always been a copycat league.

If any books from Marvel needed to be, maybe not rebooted, but at least pared down, it's the Avengers and X-men titles. Way too many to try and keep up with, at least in single issue form. Trades are cool and all, but I'm still old school and like to collect single issues. Too many crossovers usually means I skip the story entirely if they cross over into titles I don't currently collect. The only books from Marvel I'm collecting right now are Daredevil (which is phenomenal, btw), Moon Knight, and Avenging Spider-Man. All self contained stories, no more than 3 or 4 issue arcs, and all quality stuff.

I think the writers are just too young or perhaps haven't really read & absorbed the older stories --- you know: the stories that made us actually care about these characters in the first place.

I go back to how badly they've ruined the X-Men in recent years. Colossus USED to be solid organic steel... yet now he only has "steel skin". Bleeds all the time. Fail.

Wolverine USED to be this cool character with a dark past & uncontrollable rages.... now he acts like he can't remember that he used to kill at the drop of a dime. Schizm was crap. Wolvie forgot that the X-Men started out as teenagers fighting for their lives; he forgot that he taught Shadowcat [and Jubilee] how to be killers if need be... and comes off as this naive wanna-be peacenik & splits up the team? Fail. Garbage.

Cyclops used to be able to kick the entire team's ass, INCLUDING Wolverine's, but nowdays it's like the writers don't know that he's a tactical genius & has depth/angular perception as part of his power set, so the Cyc/Wolvie fight lasted way too friggin long.

And why the hell is Wolverine in every issue & on every team? SHAMELESS bullshit.

They rarely show Storm as powerful as she is.
They've got convoluted X-Titles falling out of everyone's butt.... Really, what is X-Men Legacy supposed to be about?? Just another title that they can throw "X-Men" on?

Marvel needs some mature, old-school writers to come back & do this sh*t right. They're all about extreme-this and extreme-that, and the stories suffer.

And they cancelled The Hidden Years?? That was one of the best X-titles they'd had in years.
Guess it was too good and they had to dumb down the reading pool a bit.

@noRegrets: ikr?

I know it's a business for these guys, and they're pretty much just interested in selling millions of copies. I don't fault them for being entrepreneurs & making money at their craft. It's just that there's a percentage of collectors out here who do actually enjoy a good story and the reason we come back for more is on the hopes that there'll be another gem in the works. Unfortunately, it seems like the really good jaw-dropping stories come out only around 25% of the time, if that.

There have been moments during the Whedon/Cassaday run on Astonishing that made me holler out loud with delight. Same thing with Bebdis' Daredevil run years ago.

The current OMAC series that DC is doing is friggin awesome, imo ---- very, very large tip o the hat to the Kirbyesque stylings and the "comic booky" storytelling.

Different books can be appreciated for different reasons, and you hit the jackpot when you've got the right artist teamed up with the right writer.

Unfortunately, most of it on the stands is kinda sub-par. I'm just glad they let us leaf through the books at the comic shop ---- I've dodged many a money-wasting bullet by previewing 'em first.
