COMICS: Expect The Marvel Universe To Look A Lot More Like Its Old Self By The Fall

To longtime readers, the Marvel Universe is pretty much unrecognisable these days. Well, following the success of DC Rebirth, it appears as if they'll be taking a back to basics approach later in 2017.

With the political climate so, well, controversial right now, it appears as if Marvel will be taking a step back from that sort of storytelling. While Secret Empire - a very political title thanks to the involvement of writer Nick Spencer and a character like Captain America - is too far along to be changed, Bleeding Cool reports that the company will be taking a different direction with stories moving forward.

Why should you care? Well, if you're fed up of seeing a teenage girl and villain as Iron Man or an "Unworthy" Thor, you'll be glad to know that a recent Marvel creative summit reportedly led to the decision to follow DC Rebirth by returning to the Marvel Universe to a place fans actually recognise.

According to the site, "as Marvel brings back the X-Men line with a bang, to expect a return to more of a status quo for titles such as Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and more. A more familiar looking Marvel Universe by the autumn – although, just as with Captain America, as
classic-look-characters return, expect new characters to keep a number of their books." That's definitely some welcome news.

However, it barely scratches the surface of Marvel's problems. Sales are plummeting, retailers are furious with them, and they're still launching new titles which confuse the hell out of new and old readers alike (after five issues of Rocket Raccoon, Rocket launches in May with a #1 issue). Will this back to basics approach make a difference? Time will tell, but it may be a good start for them.

@Equivocal - I Hope The Diverse heroes coexist with the old heroes when Marvel turns The Marvel Universe back to the place we knew once.

How hard it is to be creative?

Will to get back on regular comics is below zero here.

@MasterMix - I know. Great artwork there, though.
I'd love to see them come back, but kept separate from the rest of the MU for a while. Maybe keep them in space or in a different dimension. Maybe even have them stuck in a different timeline. Do a Back to the Future 2 and have them running around in the 60's Stan and Jack era, whilst trying to make sure they don't bump into any of the other characters.

@IronDean2099 - Anything to get that Fant4stic taste out of my mouth.

@IronDean2099 - I like that idea a lot! Imagine reed knowing the future but not being able to do anything about it. Make it the 70's and Johnny being torn over not being able to help spidey save gwen.

@leethario - See, you're getting it. So much potential. I also have a pitch for a FF movie, but I'm holding that one close to my chest.

Sounds good to me.

Although, I've enjoyed a number of great current titles that don;t get the attention they deserve like there Power Man and Iron Fist run, Black Panther, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight and Old Man Logan.

Both Moon Knight and Old Man Logan have been STELLAR beyond belief

@ComicsBornAndBred - I read Doctor Strange, but I wasn't too sure on Old Man Logan as it seemed to me as they were doing it for the sake of it. If you dont mind me asking, could you elaborate on how good it is, cause I feel there are good marvel titles, but just the main ones are hiding them.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Good not "stellar beyond belief." But compared to the rest of their crappy it might as well be.

DC still Killin it from all directions tho.

@Nightmare - I love those those two series, thats just me. And BP has been great. I wll say, my favorite series between both companies has been Deathstroke at DC. Shit is addicting.

@ComicsBornAndBred - It's unreal what they're doing and at the pace they're shelling them out. I took a chance on Lanterns and it's been a surprise. Love me some Jessica Cruz.

Cyborg has been excellent, Justice League, Batman, Deathstroke, Superman, etc. JL vs SS wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

Ready for new titles.

@Nightmare - Batman has been too good. Cyborg I've been loving. Need to hop on Superman and JL. Gl too apparently.

@ComicsBornAndBred - The level of pure creative skill being displayed in Deathstroke is where BP should be (and was under Christopher Priest).

BP is currently a shadow of its former self. Here's hoping Coates gets the boot.

@Battabing - I still like BP, despite how talky it can get. I respect the intelligence he's brought to it.

Deathstroke is UNFAIRLY good right now. I'm addicted to reading it lol.

@DarthGrizzly - I think its VERY good. Its a brutal character study of Wolverine. It digs deep into who he is and what torture his life has been.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Crap art! I miss the old days when it was clear concise and realistic. Where have you gone George Perez, John Byrne, Terry Austin, Bob Layton???
EnigmaticMan
EnigmaticMan - 2/9/2017, 11:57 AM
@Nightmare - I am disappointed in both companies. It seems like with each new direction I like different books from both companies. As soon as I get into a book they change it all up, and I don't like it.
I wish they would let the readers vote for which artists and writer works on which book and we get to pick which incarnation.

Hmmm... your politically correct vision of Marvel didn't satisfy the masses and now you're forced to go back to white male leads, Disney?

Fogs
Fogs - 2/6/2017, 12:55 PM
@xcan - As I use to say, my problem isn't even with the changes. It's the simple fact that it doesn't take a genius to know they'll revert every single [frick]ing thing back. They simply have no balls to keep a timeline. [frick] them.
