Interesting... still it's stupid that he's quitting. Pete ain't no quitter. Sides he'll be back behind the mask after a few months.

"When this is over, you can rest. Someone else can be Spider-Man."

Umm, why? Uncle Ben, you are the same person who said "With great power comes great responsibility." So shouldn't Peter always be Spider-Man if he has the ability to do the right and responsible thing? If Peter survives the end of the story with his powers, why would he quit? It's also odd that Ben would be the one encouraging Peter to quit being Spider-Man. What exactly is it about this situation that would allow Peter to quit if he were to fix it?

This is the reason I'm against Peter being replaced. I wouldn't mind it if Peter was a fully-developed character and had learned something over the course of his journey. Marvel doesn't want the real-life drama of being an adult because they're afraid it will have a huge impact on Peter's life as a crimefighter. That's just hypocritical because Spider-Man is the character who is supposed to face the real-life drama of the world. That is why he has endured over the last 50 years: His ability to relate to the reader.

As if One More Day wasn't treacherous and unnecessary enough, now we have this nonsense. As much as I hate that story, the whole point of it was to preserve the character of Peter Parker for the next 20 to 30 years. Now,just five years later, Peter is being replaced. So that whole recton was completely pointless.

Where OMD went against Spidey's role of being responsible and selfless, Slott's story goes against his perseverance. As much as I talk about Peter never learning from his mistakes, he still has an unwillingness to quit. No matter how much he suffers and no matter how many loved ones die around him, he is always able to bounce back from tragedy and move on with his life. For Uncle Ben to tell Peter he can quit after this particular mission is not only contradicting the character of Peter Parker, it is contradicting to the entire role of Uncle Ben: His death encouraged Peter to never give up and always try to do the right thing.

This isn't a story about how one hero must complete his journey that hasn't been written correctly. It's about Marvel's incompetence of not allowing their characters to grow like actual characters.

@captainovious spot on man. Spider-man has been pigeonholed by marvel into a
Position where writers can't do things with him because marvel doesn't consider it to be "relatable". I put this all down to that prick quesada, the man who thinks comic book fans can't relate to a married man, the most condescending thing I have ever heard came from that man.

If marvel get the marriage back together I might start enjoying spidey again, and it might be a long shot but I hope Peter and mj finally have kids, that's the next step for spider-man to grow as a character
CaptainObvious
CaptainObvious - 11/21/2012, 7:10 PM
@SteveRogersSon- Give Batman some credit. At least he was a character who was fully developed and had a completed arc by the end. I wouldn't mind Spidey quitting if Marvel actually gave him a character-arc and properly developed it. Not recton it because they either don't know how to write a fully-realized Spidey or they don't have enough faith in their target audience.
