Maybe she'll go to Egypt and kick the asses of the Muslim males that threatened to rape my wife and my wife's mother, and also kill her father unless they converted from Christianity to Islam. Maybe she could go to Pakistan and free Asia Bibi.

Hah! Hilarious!
One thing though, the art-style and the real "slice-of-life" feel i get from these panels really make it seem as though it would rock as an Indie comic more than a mainstream Marvel superhero title. BUT, it gets to use Marvel references, so there's that.

Also, for a Caucasian lady, G.Willow Wilson knows what's up with Pakistani families. She's got it down to a T! :D

I can't get over her Powers though. They're kinda lame lol

I don't think all Muslims are terrorists, but I'm not interested in the details of Muslim life, either. I don't relate to these characters at all. I'm not a Muslim or a girl. I hope the Muslim chick market is enough to keep this book alive. Not really, I couldn't care less if it gets cancelled or not.

Like so many current entertainment/media products; it does not have to be good it just has to be P.C.

Mmmm... I dunno why this kinda rubs me the wrong way. It's not a race thing, it's more making a religion so prominent and "In you face!" as a marketing tool for a character as this is. I mean I've seen Catholic guilt with Murdock but that was more as drapery. This is like gimmick, ploy, gimmick.

Rpendo - 2/2/2014, 6:07 AM
It's no more a ploy than making Batwoman lesbian, or having Northstar get married. It's a representation of what life is like for a certain section of the American community.

You know what? You're right.

All new superheroes should be white, Christian, and Republican.

Because we don't want to pander to the liberals...

@Ckal: OF COURSE they make it the focal point and the most important thing about the character.
I mean, if you wanted to represent a certain group of people that had not received representation in that manner before, you'd want it to be the first thing people saw and understood before moving on to bigger things.

It makes complete and total sense for them to do this, and the fact that she's a legacy character adds even more name recognition and exposure. I supported Simon Baz and i support this, because let's face it, even though i said it feels more like an Indie comic, NOBODY would give two shits about this character if she was launched as her own hero with absolutely nothing to do with any other character in her own solo series.
Nobody.

I mean, look at black characters like John Stewart or The Falcon or Luke Cage. Look at some of the gay characters too, like Northstar.
RIGHT NOW, they're just characters, bad-asses doing superhero things and nobody mentions their color or sexual orientations.

BUT BACK WHEN THEY WERE FIRST INTRODUCED, That's EXACTLY what they were billed as, the new Negro or Homosexual novelty. This is the same thing here.
Before we move onto Kamala's Miss Marvel, we have to see Kamala the young, muslim American teen of Pakistani heritage growing up.

I really hope that this title takes off. Muslims are people too. There is no point in pretending that they are not a part of society, so why shouldn't they be part of the MU too?

I have mixed feelings- i don't really care about the Muslim thing, it doesn't interest me at all. I think her powers are crap and don't understand why she isn't just her own character especially as her powers are in no way Kree related by the looks of it....

Wow guess my feelings aren't mixed at all, i won't be buying this
StarkAnthony
StarkAnthony - 2/2/2014, 7:57 AM
The Muslim content shown here isn't the character, it's the character's situation. I think it's great that they are trying something different, even if it does seem a little heavy handed. It would be cool if she didn't have to be a legacy character, but unfortunately if she wasn't she probably wouldn't get any publicity.

Eh, it got better as it went. Many comic authors, for some reason, tend to "oversell" the cultural minority segment if they're asked to write one, especially in the first few issues. This can come across as a bit unctuous at the beginning.

Good news is that, 9 times out of 10, the author is done with this phase after a few issues and, growing more comfortable in his or her position, starts focusing more on character and less on trappings.

jimoakley666 - Good for you, read on. I still don't give a rat's ass about the adventures of a Female Muslim teen. Don't get too worked up about it, tho. In a few months, this book will be cancelled because there aren't enough people who ARE interested in reading about a female Muslim teen.

In the meantime, you'll get to feel good about your progressive stance, Marvel will get to feel all diverse n' stuff and the rest of us will wait for a character we care about. No big.

So funny to hear the whiners complain every time a character isn't white. Like they somehow have been inconvenienced by a comic they weren't buying anyway. The very fact that people are complaining is proof that it was the right thing to do.

@dethpillow Perhaps your argument would be be more impactful if you used proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Logic also makes a good foundation with which to ground your point.

@GLprime2814 I completely agree. The simple fact is that this book isn't cramming anything down our throats but instead has a specific target audience that many of the posters on this site aren't part of. Several commenters on this article are just too closed-minded or obtuse to grasp that concept.

"Xenophobia," not racism, I guess. Though, the argument could be made that people are reacting negatively not just because of the characters' religion, but because of their ethnicity. "Bigotry," might be a more encapsulating term to apply in this case.

"Does she have the power to walk into a crowd of innocents and blow them all up? Or perhaps the ability to fly into buildings killing thousands?" That was a gem from Magnus66, no doubt an intellectual-powerhouse and scholar.

"Bigotry."
