Marvel Comics has announced that a new era of Fantastic Four will kick off this November from the creative team of writer Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) and artist Iban Coello (Venom). Alex Ross is responsible for the first issue's two jaw-dropping covers, though there will also be a special variant by the legendary writer and artist Frank Miller.
The mind behind The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, his take on the 'Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed' Thing is certainly pretty eye-catching.
The cover marks Miller’s first Marvel Comics work in nearly 30 years, and it's said that fans can look forward to more variant covers from the visionary creator in the near future. That's an exciting prospect, and we're hoping the artist will eventually reunite with Matt Murdock.
In the series, something has gone terribly wrong in New York, sending the Thing and his wife Alicia travelling across America to escape it. But when they stop in a small town for the night and wake up the morning before they arrived, they find themselves caught in a time loop that’s been going on since before they were born!
That may sound like a small-scale story, but North tells Entertainment Weekly that, "I want to do these smaller, self-contained stories in the vein of '60s Star Trek, where they go down to a planet, find a weird thing, fix the weird thing, and move on."
"Having these four weirdos roll into town where there's a mystery or a problem or some sci-fi thing, solve the problem, and then move on struck me as a very interesting way to position the Fantastic Four and tell stories that would feel fresh and not like a retread of what we've seen before."
The first issue focuses on Ben Grimm and Alicia, while issue #2 will shift the spotlight on Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. The Human Torch will then be the main subject of issue #3, though it's said the series will quickly bring Marvel's First Family back together.
