DAREDEVIL And SIN CITY Artist Frank Miller Returns To Marvel Comics For FANTASTIC FOUR Variant Cover

Marvel Comics is relaunching Fantastic Four this November with a new creative team, and legendary artist Frank Miller has made his Marvel Universe return to illustrate a variant cover featuring The Thing.

Marvel Comics has announced that a new era of Fantastic Four will kick off this November from the creative team of writer Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) and artist Iban Coello (Venom). Alex Ross is responsible for the first issue's two jaw-dropping covers, though there will also be a special variant by the legendary writer and artist Frank Miller.

The mind behind The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, his take on the 'Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed' Thing is certainly pretty eye-catching.

The cover marks Miller’s first Marvel Comics work in nearly 30 years, and it's said that fans can look forward to more variant covers from the visionary creator in the near future. That's an exciting prospect, and we're hoping the artist will eventually reunite with Matt Murdock.

In the series, something has gone terribly wrong in New York, sending the Thing and his wife Alicia travelling across America to escape it. But when they stop in a small town for the night and wake up the morning before they arrived, they find themselves caught in a time loop that’s been going on since before they were born!

That may sound like a small-scale story, but North tells Entertainment Weekly that, "I want to do these smaller, self-contained stories in the vein of '60s Star Trek, where they go down to a planet, find a weird thing, fix the weird thing, and move on."

"Having these four weirdos roll into town where there's a mystery or a problem or some sci-fi thing, solve the problem, and then move on struck me as a very interesting way to position the Fantastic Four and tell stories that would feel fresh and not like a retread of what we've seen before."

The first issue focuses on Ben Grimm and Alicia, while issue #2 will shift the spotlight on Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. The Human Torch will then be the main subject of issue #3, though it's said the series will quickly bring Marvel's First Family back together.

The Reed Richards on those covers make me think of Anson Mount, who I think would be a pretty good choice for Mr. Fantastic

Never really been a big fan of his art aside from TDKR and 300. Doesn't look good though...IMO at least.

@UniqNo - I'm going to say it's pretty bad. People tolerate it cause it's him, if it was a rookie everybody would bash it.

I'm with you. In TDK (1, let's be clear), Sin City, 300 and specially older regular comics (Wolverine comes to mind) it appears he was trying.

His more recent art (not that recent actually) seems lazy, just like it happened with John Romita Jr, whose art I used to really like back then.

@Fogs - Romita's art hasn't changed i don't think, i'd probably say it's the colours.

Frank Millar's art back in the day suited the tone of the stories but i can't imagine it fits in with F4.

I think he's been unwell though. Never confirmed as far as i know, but physically there was a drastic change in his appearance in a very short space of time a few years ago. Maybe it's affected him.

@Fogs - I think it was Romita’s work on Superman that made me really dislike his art. What a God awful run.

@UniqNo - ahhh... if you look at his art in og daredevil then in superman... there's no way saying he isn't half assing it in the latest.

@OldMan - totally, I just don't get it.

My theory is deadline pressure cause the man knows how to draw.

Yeah I’ve always thought his art wasn’t that good. I figured he got a pass from everybody because the story was good.

@WruceBayne - he was competent in his wolverine work.

I get the stylized work but there's a limit for that being good comicbook art IMO.

Setting aside the nightmare that is the Thing's face here, I'm oddly drawn to the conspicuous black hole where his dick should be. You've done it again, Frank!

Alex Ross is a God amongst mortals, also She-Hulk was pretty good! Other than the lazy way of giving her powers, it was pretty pretty prettay good

I'm so confused looking at this, it kinda looks like a very interesting, abstract rendition of The Thing, almost like a Picasso-esque piece. But I get the feeling that probably wasn't the intention.

I'm tempted to say something about this...but I'm gonna give Frank a pass cause he created some good comics back in the day.

@Thing94 - Yeah he did good, when Ryan Stegman was busy with King In Black.
Shame about the writer of this title, he wrote f*ckin Squirrel Girl.

Frank Miller is one of the most overrated Comicbook artists in the business.

It really seems like he's gotten progressively worse as the years went on. That Ben Grimm cover looks like dog shit.
his TDK run was better, and 300 had that more cartoony styles but the coloring and paint work made it a work of art.

This just looks like shit.

Thank god they have Alex Ross to offset some of the garbage that Frank Miller turned into.

Also, Unpopular opinion but even Miller's writing is pretty garbage. He writes one character over and over. His Daredevil, Batman, Frank, all of them are the same character. They're the outlaw that knows what needs to get done, despite the straights telling him he's wrong. And he's just way to gritty to even bother fighting at their level. He fights dirty.
EVERY. SINGLE. HERO. HE. WRITES.

Dude is kind of ass. He was cool in the beginning because it was different. Now it's stale bread.

THING looks like poop. He shouldn't be drawn with permanent painful poop faces. I don't want him to look like a turd person on screen. He has to be the lovable lug and the Frankensteins monster of the group, not a peice of poop.

Miller was great on the early Daredevil run, then he went downhill all the way, and yes I include the Dark Knight in that. For all the critical aclaim the art in the Dark Knight comics was ridiculous

Not a big fan of Miller’s pencils since his early work, such as his first run on DD. I would say the same thing about JR, JR since someone else mentioned him. Loved his work on Iron Man in the late ‘70’s but not any longer. It’s one thing to develop your own stylized way of drawing bit if it’s an ugly style, hard pass.

I like some of millers work, but this isn’t doing it for me. He really only excels when using heavy shadows and dramatic lighting. This looks like a bad cartoon
