While the Sorcerer Supreme looks set to take centre stage in Spider-Man: No Way Home this December, his comic book counterpart's days are numbered. The last moments in the life of Stephen Strange are upon us in Death of Doctor Strange, a five-issue series that promises to reveal the tragic fate of the sorcerer supreme and the consequences his demise will unleash on the Marvel Universe.

Writer Jed MacKay and artist Lee Gabrett unite for this terrifying tale filled with deadly new villains, mystical feats, and complex mysteries that all the Marvel Universe's heroes will be desperate to solve! Now, a trailer has been released offering a much better idea of what we can expect.

"'What happens to the world if Doctor Strange isn't in it?' It's a question that I'm excited to show people the answer to in Death of Doctor Strange," MacKay says. "Strange has been a Marvel fixture from the early days, but now, his time has run out and as a Strange fan, it's been my bittersweet privilege to shepherd him through his last day and the effects that snowball out of it. We've cooked up a whale of a story to send Strange off with, and I can't wait for people to join us on it!"

"Doctor Strange has long been top of my 'most coveted character' list. To finally get chance to draw him in such a momentous series is...well, magic," Garbett adds. "I couldn’t be more excited for the project and for everyone to see what we’ve got in store for Stephen and those closest to him. Jed’s conjured the perfect finale for Doctor Strange - and it’s a real third eye-opener!"

Death of Doctor Strange #1 is set to be released on September 22!

Is this in continuity with the Marvel Universe or is it an elseworlds/what if kind of thing like Silver Surfer: Requiem was.

That's the reason I don't really care about regular comics anymore.

Strange will need to train a new Supreme Sorcerer in the MCU. Maybe not now, but I don't think Benedict Cumberbatch always plays Doctor Strange. So...

I think the comics should at least try to make death permanent. Like, in this case kill Dr. Strange and have him replaced and see how that goes. It worked for Miles Morales.

Granted if sales slump or new character isn’t working… then fine bring them back as audience is craving them, but if it like the usual kill and bring back it means nothing

@Knightrider - Ultimate Peter Parker was actually resurrected. Twice.

Even aftsr Catacylsm, the event that wiped out the Ultimate universe, it was shown in the final pages of Spider-Men II that the Ultimate universe had been resurrected somehow, with a new team of Ultimates consisting of an adult Riri as Iron Heart and college age Ultimate Peter Parker. It's a real shame that never became a series...

We gotta introduce a new Doctor Strange for when Benedict Cabbage-patch is done with the movies…. Em we mean…. For story purposes

these gimmick events have ruined comics

It's hilarious that as they hit their strides in the films both Scarlet Witch and Dr. Strange are dead and dying in the comics.

@Battabing - exactly, killing characters means nothing anymore

Are they just going down the checklist of heroes who haven't had a "Death of" arc yet? Ever since Death of Deadpool and Death of Wolverine, I roll my eyes at these. Every comic book reader can see through this gimmicky nonsense, so stop.

In some ways, Watchmen, Secret Wars, and The Death of Superman are the worst things to happen to the comic book industry. Mainly because the publishers learned all of the wrong lessons from them.

@Darkknight2149 - also dark knight returns (Denny O’Neal brought back dark Batman not Miller)

@dracula -
I think All Star Batman & Robin is a brilliant (unintentional?) parody of everything wrong with many of the comics that were "inspired" by The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen.

@Darkknight2149 - based on miller's other work, doubt it was intended as parody. Seriously he has probably put out more bad than good at this point.

That book killed the All Star line, after that great start with All Star Superman. Luckily now we have Earth One

If they are struggling so much in doing new stories with existing characters, why not focus in creating new characters altogether? And no, I don't mean alternate versions of existing ones. But maybe that would be even harder for them.

So when no way home comes out both Peter Parker and Doctor Strange will be dead? That's smart marketing

There is no shock value in killing characters any more, not like when they killed off Gwen Stacey or Jean Grey.

The first comic book character to die was in 1940, and was resurrected in 1960. Some of you "now it's horrible" people are some goddamn drama queens.
