EDITORIAL: How Marvel Studios Can Kill Two Birds With One Stone

If Phase One and Phase Two are any sort of template for Phase Three, I believe we could see a crossover in the works before Avengers 3. What do I mean by this? Read on for my speculation.

In Phase One, the audience received five movies before Marvel's The Avengers. In Phase Two, much to my disappointment, we are only getting four.

Now, the way Marvel has their schedule set up--releasing two movies a year--logic would tell us that we're probably getting an Avengers 3 in 2018, which would give us 5 movies beforehand. Otherwise, we would probably only be getting three movies before Avengers 3, and I don't think Marvel is going to do that.

Kevin Feige has said that they will probably do one sequel per year and one new character movie per year. I'm sure there will be exceptions to this, of course, but let's use it as a guideline.

What are some rumored movies for Phase 3?

Ant-Man

Ant-Man has been the only movie officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, so it isn't a rumored movie but there are plenty of rumors surrounding it. Despite how amped up we are, we do not know much about it.

Dr. Strange

This movie is all but confirmed, being a favorite of MS President Kevin Feige. Also, with an Iron Man 4 looking less and less likely, Dr. Strange would be a suitable 'replacement' seeing how magic is such a massively popular element of fiction.

As much as I want this movie to happen, I really hope they don't put him in Avengers 3. He's great, but I just can't see him as an Avenger.

Captain America 3

Ah, my favorite superhero. No talks or confirmation yet, but I'm pretty sure this will happen, as Chris Evans has a contract for three solo movies and three Avengers movies. If Robert Redford's character doesn't turn out to be the Red Skull, I'd definitely like to see the Red Skull reappear in this movie.

Black Panther

"Very much in development," I'd say Black Panther is a perfect choice for Phase 3 and a great way to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I can definitely see him in Avengers 3 up against Thanos in some or fashion, and fans have been waiting on a solo film for him way too long. My personal pic for Black Panther would be Chadwich Boseman.

Some others include Hulk 2, Thor 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. As much as I'd like to see a War Machine or Loki film, I don't see that happening, either.

So altogether that would be seven movies before A3, and we know that at the most we are going to have five. Let's review, shall we?

Ant-Man (July 2015)
Cap/Thor/Hulk/Guardians (early 2016)
Dr. Strange/Black Panther (late 2016)
Cap/Thor/Hulk/Guardians (early 2017)
Dr. Strange/Black Panther (late 2017)
Avengers 3 (May 2018)

Now, obviously Marvel Studios can't make every single one of those movies. And if Guardians of the Galaxy is a huge success, I foresee Marvel being torn between a Thor 3 and GOTG sequel (especially since GOTG 2 could be another good tie in for A3).

So what's the solution?

In my opinion, a Thor-and-Guardians team up movie would be awesome and definitely a cash-maker. It's happened before in the comics, and being that they are all space travelers I see no reason why it couldn't work on screen.

"Chris Evans has a contract for three solo movies and three Avengers movies"

Just because he's contracted, doesn't mean it'll will definitely happen, and not a given for Phase 3 either.

As I pointed out in the Alan Taylor article, Ed Norton and Terence Howard were both contracted for more films. The contract is so that Marvel can definitely have them appear in future films, but is in no way a guarantee that more films will be made with that actor.

"at the most we are going to have five"

How is that known? We got six in Phase 1, and will have five in Phase 2. For all we know, Phase 3 will be 20 movies. Nothing is written in stone, and no true pattern has been established.

"obviously Marvel Studios can't make every single one of those movies"

Why not? Again, no pattern has been established. It's a movie studio. They can turn out five movies, ten movies, even 15 movies a year if they wanted to put up the funding for it. There isn't enough data to say anything with any certainty. At one point, they had FOUR release dates reserved next year. 4/4, 5/16, 6/27, and 8/1. They obviously aren't using all of them, but they very well could have. Or perhaps they even have a secret project or two to announce.

Either way, it's pretty wide open. Some years, they may do one, or no films. Some years they may do only two, or even four.

Also, I agree about the Joker picture. If you aren't trying to start a flame war, it's at the very least distracting and adds nothing to the article at all.

"Here is what most likly will happen"

Based on what? It's just a guess. We can all make guesses, and I'm sure yours won't be the last, but they're still simply guesses.

I'm glad you didn't put in IM4. I don't want there to be one. If it's all about Tony creating Ultron in Avengers AU, then there's no need for him to be in the spotlight again.

That's true.

And really, with that in mind, Avengers 2 and Avengers 3 can easily continue Thor and Cap's stories as well.

I'd love to see Nova somewhere in Phase 3, how good would a Nova film not be?

How good would a Nova film not be is a double negative. So you're asking, if a Nova film was made, how not good would that be?

jk, I know what you meant.

It would be a good idea to combine Thor with Guardians, but it all depends on if they appear in AoU. Also, that jab at Affleck at the end is uncalled for and has no point being in this article.

I wonder when Thanos is going after Loki, after Loki failed him.

Yep, Captain America 3 is to be titled Captain America: A Well Deserved Rest. It's a vacation 70 years in the making! No other Avengers, just mixing it up with the locals, and even less eventful than the Magical Mystery Tour.

@fangz

I've been saying it in several places, so you may have heard already my idea for the Marvel Knights stuff was actually for the 4 new series they were talking about. Hopefully on something like FX, but with all the street level stuff, it'd be minimal effects. And then have a big crossover across the series finale for all 4 or how ever many. AOS would be totally separate.

Thats not a double negative...

I think you could kill two birds with one shot better if you do a crossover between the Avengersand Guardians of the Galaxy against Thanos. Combining it with the Ragnarok storyline in Agard. Boom!
