GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ANTMAN: Abandoning FANTASTIC FOUR & SPIDERMAN

Marvel is developing these properties into replacements for these classic characters, and the originals will suffer as a result.

Just my 2 cents.

I love SPIDERMAN... I love the FANTASTIC FOUR... These are irreplaceable characters and franchises.

I'm (cough cough) a little older than most fans, but I grew up with the original stories for these characters in my brain. Though some elements seem dated now, the essential charm of each book and each character has stayed with me my whole life.

For COSMIC superhero stories, there is no alternative: the FANTASTIC FOUR is the original. Stan Lee and Kirby at the height of their powers. It was, and is, great stuff. Galactus. The Negative Zone. Doctor Doom. The Mole Man. Sub Mariner's reawakening. This Man, This Monster. Fantastic concepts, worthy of the name.

And SPIDERMAN... Lee and Ditko, Romita and Conway. The earnest, original nerd, the loser, the non-stop soap opera drama, the internal narrative we all had, in a way, in our heads as teens... And the stories... Green Goblin. Vulture. Doc Ock. The Lizard. The deaths of the Staceys. The Osbornes... On and on. The debt of modern superhero comics to these stories is impossible to calculate. It's why we're here!

And I'll be honest. I've read almost nothing of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. I've read some of the very early ANTMAN, and a little of irredeemable ANTMAN.... But I can't help but feel that MARVEL is turning their back on SPIDERMAN and the FANTASTIC FOUR... The very characters that BUILT Marvel.

Now, I know getting the movie rights to these characters back would be expensive. I understand that this will NEVER happen.... But to develop these *other* characters cinematically as their seeming replacements does the originals a great disservice!

Look at IRON MAN. We love that first movie! It's great, and Robert Downey Jr. and the script made that whole franchise fresh and fun in a way that most of us would never have expected. But does someone want to tell me what kind of a world we're living in where the movie IRON MAN is funnier and more likeable than the movie SPIDERMAN?

And this gets to the heart of the matter. The movies matter. They are seen by far more people than read the comics. Their success shapes the future of the comics themselves. And both SPIDERMAN and the FANTASTIC FOUR *deserve* *better*!

And again, I know that the movie rights will not be regained...

But what about TV?

Nobody really cares about a SHIELD series. Not as much as they would for a live-action SPIDERMAN series set in the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.

And the FANTASTIC FOUR.... If the Marvel cinematic universe should have begun with ANY movie... If the cinematic universe honoured the cornerstone of the comics empire at all... In lieu of the lost movie rights, there would be *NO* SHIELD TV series, with characters 99.9 % of the public doesn't care about....

There would be a FANTASTIC FOUR live-action series... A series that fills in the missing history of the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE by honouring the comic that made it all possible!

And SPIDERMAN.... I want a modern-day, episodic, 'not waiting 2 years to see the next episode treatment' of that character! Spiderman, swinging through the streets of New York alongside the heroes in the SHARED Marvel universe!

We all want that... And it's possible - isn't it? Maybe I'm uninformed. I've searched the web, trying to find out with clarity... But from what I can tell, MARVEL could make these live-action shows, tied to their shared universe, and there's nothing to stop them....

MARVEL, if this is true - if you have the rights - give us the geektastic, ongoing, week-to-week phenomenon that Marvel had back in the early sixties and seventies - give us *that* *on our television screens!* Push the epic event of creating a shared cinematic universe even further by extending the empire to television with characters that people will *really* care about... Not some nameless 'BUFFY meets ALIAS' non-event, but the heroes we know - and love! - on our screens, culminating and concluding in movie events the like of which we've never imagined!

I know it can be done! These characters have paid for the mortgages, the cars, the vacation homes and groceries of Marvel employees for decades.... Please give them their due!

Sincerely, a Marvel fan.

Chill out, bro.

Ant-Man will NEVER get as big as Spidey. No matter how hard they try.

Now the two FF movies weren't exactly the biggest blockbusters of all time, but I don't expect GOTG to even reach those levels.

So yeah, no worries. These two shit franchises will never be as big as the ones that they are expected to replace.

Don't see why you're whining about Spider-Man. Yes, the Fantastic Four really need some luurrv, but has Ant-Man or Guardians ever, EVER gotten some luuurrrrv before? Give them some luuuuuurrrrrrvvvv.

So you should probably read some Guardians of the Galaxy. I would suggest starting with Annihilation and working through the War of Kings. Honestly having read a lot of comics in my life Guardians of the Galaxy was far more entertaining than Fantastic Four. In fact I can only take Fantastic Four in small doses. I love it when they make a cameo in something else but their own titles, even the Ultimate version, leaves something to be desired.

Ant Man will NEVER be Spider-man. Very different characters and to bring him to the big screen as a Spider-man clone would loose Marvel money because no one would be interested.

So chill out, read some Guardians of the Galaxy and get back to us when you finish.

It's not about the quality of the GOTG or ANTMAN books. I'm sure they're great....

My main point is this - It's Marvel's *only* angle to get these core characters on screen, as developed by their own studio... which clearly can make a big difference in terms of the quality of what we get!

And BTW, I intend on reading the GOTG stuff.... The modern takes on the team look cool and fun....

Nobody's going to forget about Fan Four or Spidey, don't worry. GOTG and Ant Man are going to be awesomely done by Marvel studios and be great flims. They have to use some different characters cause Fox and Sony would charge a fortune for Marvel to have these properties back. They have to work with what they have.

Remember, the more things change the more they stay the same. Have faith in Marvel and what they're doing. They took risks back in the 60's just like they are now and like always everything will turn out EPIC!!

You answered your own questions. Marvel more than likely will not get back the right to Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. Sony and FOX value those franchises too much to let them go, and Marvel knows this, so they have chosen to exploit other characters that they do own. And you know what? They seem to be doing well witht them. I'm no fan of Ant Man in the comics unless we are talking Irradeemable, but I'll check out the movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy could be awesome.

chill out. marvel doesnt have the rights. plain and simple. spiderman just got rebooted. fan four is about to be . xmen was rebooted. marvel is doing great with what they have. sheild is the only plausible live action show i could handle. i dont really like superhero tv shows. too dramatic for me.

- - Honest question - does anyone have a link to an official source, or a recognized source (like Variety, Marvel, Fox, etc) that describes who has the *TV* rights to these characters at this point?

The TV rights - that's my total point... Marvel doesn't have the rights to include these characters in their films, BUT they can still do what they want on television IF the rights are separate, i.e. if Marvel still has live-action TV rights. They still clearly have *animated* rights... I suspect the same is true of live action.

And by replacing, clearly the characters are still being promoted and used and are very successful.

I just mean that they will *never* exist in the official shared universe of Marvel movies... EVER. Disney/Marvel will *never* pay to get them back, and they make too much money for Fox etc.

And that's a shame. So they're using GOTG and ANTMAN in their absence as substitutes.

That's why TV is the best hope for Marvel to still keep those characters in the movie universe....

I agree with the watered down point. It would be a worry, but I just don't see what the alternative is if we ever want live-action Spidey and live-action FF teaming up with *anyone* from the Marvel universe....

Otherwise, they'll always be one offs. Same with the X MEN. They will always be in self contained, isolated movie universes, which is too bad. It would be fun to see a whole universe of these classic characters on-screen together...

i just started finished guardians of the galaxy legacy and about to start annihilation. i like the comic but i dont know about a movie yet. id love to see the adventures in space and stuff but im not sure about rocket. ant man is going to be awesome just because of edgar wright so people need to stop worrying. and a tv series of fan four or spidey or x men would be awful. sheild is the only way to go because its about the agency that deals with all the crazy super hero and alien stuff kinda like x files. way more relatable on a week to week basis then having to watch a crappy cgi tv show with spiderman.

I want Marvel to develop FF as a TV series, connected to the Marvel cinematic universe.

A TV series is the only way it will happen, now, in light of the awesome financial box-office of the Avengers. FOX will never let the rights lapse if they believe they are sitting on an Avengers-like movie property, whose value has just been proven. So if we ever want to see this happen, TV is the best option.

I agree that GOTG will be a big hit. That's kind of the problem.

When it becomes a hit movie, it is doing for GOTG what Marvel *should* be doing with FF.

Once GOTG is a hit movie, it will become Marvel's new go-to franchise for cosmic adventure.... Which is what the FF is all about. Marvel wouldn't even *exist* today without the early success of the FF, and FF put *cosmic* on the map.

So that's how the GOTG will 'replace' FF....
