Rank the 5 Best-Looking CBM Visual, Special Effects Characters!

For those returning from the DC and Marvel Editions of the Character-Actor Rankings, the Top 5 Costume Rankings, and the Top 5 Practical, Visual Effects Characters, welcome back!

Your job is to rank what you believe to be the 5 best-looking, visual, special effects characters.

The format is pretty simple. Provide the name of the character and the specific film in which the effects you’re ranking are prominent or the character name and associated actor in the case of a character who has been featured in multiple adaptations by different people.

What you provide in your comment

  1. Hulk (The Incredible Hulk)
  2. Groot (GotG)
  3. Doomsday (BvS)
  4. Silver Surfer (F4: RotSS)
  5. Cyborg (Justice League)

____________________________________________________________________________

That’s it. Make sure to put all of your rankings in one comment.

The Scoring System

The system here is a bit different than previous ranking challenges. As I’m asking you to provide your own results without any guidance on my behalf, I simply cannot tally the votes. Also, under the same reasoning, a simple tally-and-average is not viable. I did originally say the tally-and-average method would be the scoring system in the Costume Rankings, but I discovered while tallying this method would not be effective for the task. For instance, Wonder Woman received 14 varying votes for scoring average of 3 while one user provided the sole vote for Captain America’s Civil War duds and as the top option, thus averaging out to 1. That system is clearly flawed, so I updated the system for the Costume Rankings, and will be using the same, new system here: tally-amount-average. For this system, I will tally all the votes for every character voted upon, pull the 5 characters with the most total votes, average their votes, and rank accordingly. If you can think of a better system, I’m all-ears. As for now, this is what we’ll use.

Now, let’s lay a few ground rules (some are for me, so don’t think I’m being a dick).

  • I will keep this up for two weeks. I may take it down sooner if there is a long enough lapse in recent rankings.

  • I will vote after everyone else. Once I do, polls are closed.

  • There will be no ties. If two characters average out to the same total, the tiebreaker will be determined by my original vote. If for some reason neither of the tied rankings were included in my Top 5, I will simply choose a winner.

  • You may vote for any character in any LIVE-ACTION MOVIE (except porn parody; throwing that out there just in case).

  • Only vote for characters who are always based in CGI, mo-cap, and effects of the like. Every CBM features a character who requires effects touch-ups in certain sequences, so we’re going to leave these rankings to characters who are based in the effects all the time.
  • Ch

  • Characters whose suits are constantly CGI in places do NOT count (Deadpool, Spider-Man, etc.). As of now, Cyborg in Justice League is my only exception. If you feel you have a case, comment and tag me. We’ll figure it out.

  • Your vote is based completely on your opinion.

  • You can provide reasoning as to why you voted the way you did, but you don’t have to.

  • I have no issues with disagreeing with/debating someone else’s rankings, but I’ll report anyone getting too unfriendly about this. I want it to be fun, and I hope you do, too.

HAPPY VOTING!

@Forthas - Electro! I guess he looks good if you turn off the sound and don't hear some of the worst dialogue of any superhero movie.

1.Hulk (The Avengers) Only appearing in a couple of scenes (granted the latter is fairly long), Hulk completely stole the show in The Avengers. What helped him do that was that he appeared to be almost completely lifelike for the first time ever. In that iconic circle around shot of the team that features him front & center, he looks like he's actually physically standing there with the team.

2.Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy) Not only did Groot look incredibly realistic, but he also had a crazy amount of personality, all while only saying 3 (okay 5) words total in the film. The effects artists did an amazing job of creating a bizarre tree creature, that was fearsome, yet completely adorable at the same time.

3.Rocket (Guardians of the Galaxy) The fact that it was believable to see a deranged raccoon shooting guns in an epic space adventure, tells you everything about how great of a job they did with Rocket. Groot & Rocket were an amazing, never-before-seen entirely CGI duo that stole countless viewers' hearts.

4.Silver Surfer (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) These two films get ragged on a lot (tho perhaps a little less ever since 2015's FANT4STIC), but one thing pretty much everyone agrees on is how awesome Silver Surfer was. They got the look spot on, & he was involved in some great action scenes (the Human Torch chase in particular).

5.Ultron (Avengers: Age of Ultron) While people may not have loved the design for him (after his initial scene), I would think most could admit that his CGI was not the issue there. I actually don't mind his look (tho I think it could've been a bit better), & he could have been a very imposing villain if they had toned down the wise-cracking a little bit. Maybe they'll bring him back in the future so he can reach his potential.

Honorable Mention:

Two-Face (The Dark Knight) The first on this list not to be entirely CGI, what they accomplished on just half a face of CGI was incredible. I was blown away by how powerful it was to see his burnt side, & how it somehow added to Aaron Eckhart's already great performance. I still get chills when I watch the scenes with Two-Face.

Colossus (Deadpool) On a tight budget, it's impressive how good of a job they did with Colossus. This version actually seems indestructible & powerful, giving us a much more comic faithful Colossus than the earlier movies.

Baby Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2) Somehow even more adorable than adult Groot, this little guy steals the show in volume 2. The opening scene alone is just ridiculously cute, making it pretty much impossible not to smile while watching it. Not quite as lifelike as the Groot from volume 1, but still pretty freakin great.

Sandman (Spider-Man 3) Not a perfect movie, but the visuals for Sandman were pretty damn good. Thomas Haden Church looked the part, & the scenes where Spider-Man & Sandman face off were dynamic & cool to see unfold.

Lizard (The Amazing Spider-Man) Another case of a not-so-great design, but works pretty well within the context of the movie. I wish we could have had a little more time with him in the white lab coat, but that's okay. Lizard is visually pretty solid.

1. Thanos
He's the most impressive thing out of the MCU, and rightfully so.

2. Hulk (Ruffalo)
Putting his facial features into the model has helped us connect with him.

3. Dr. Manhattan
Appropriately god-like in his visuals, he's the best-realized Watchman.

4. Colossus (Deadpool)
As an X-Men fan, this was the most perfect character I've ever seen.

5. Rocket
The GotG raccoon comes to life in a winning way that can't be denied.

HM
Rocksteady, Bebop, and Krang.
All looked awesome. Arguably the best things from the Ninja Turtles sequel, but they are more a nod to the cartoon than comics.

Sandman
He's not CG all the time, but when Marko goes monster, you can see every grain particle at work.
