Marvel Comics Will Make A HUGE Change To Thor's Origin In This Week's AVENGERS #42 - SPOILERS

Some spoilers for tomorrow's Avengers #42 have leaked online, and it appears Marvel Comics is getting set to make a major change to Thor's origin story. This could be controversial, that's for sure...

In the pages of Jason Aaron's Avengers run, we've learned that Odin was once romantically involved with the Phoenix Force. The All-Father has spent countless lifetimes mourning his lost love, and it sounds like tomorrow's Avengers #42 will finally elaborate on what made their relationship so special.

Bleeding Cool is reporting that the comic will reveal that the Phoenix Force is, in fact, Thor's mother.

Yeah.

This is quite a game-changer for the God of Thunder; in the 1980s, Marvel Comics revealed that Frigga is only Thor's step-mother, with it later coming to light that Gaea, Goddess of the Earth, is Thor's biological mother. That was a relatively minor twist at the time, but this is a big retcon to the character's story, and one which could have major ramifications for the Asgardians for many years to come.

The Phoenix Force is, of course, most commonly associated with its host, Jean Grey. However, in recent years, the entity has factored heavily into stories featuring Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and it will be interesting to see what sort of impact this has on Thor and how he's portrayed in that title moving forward.

With the X-Men coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, could a similar twist be in store for the big screen version of Thor? It's certainly possible, but time is obviously going to tell on that front.

Avengers #42 is on sale tomorrow.

It also looks like Mephisto is the big bad of the whole Multiverse, right now. There are multiple alternate reality versions of the character all working in tandem to achieve nefarious ends.

Couple that with the fact that Mephisto looks to be the big bad of Wandavision, Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: Home for the Holidays and remembering that Kevin Feige is now in charge of ALL of Marvel now, not just movies and I think we could have a pretty huge multiversal crossover on our hands involving all of Marvel's cinematic, comics and television history, with an army of Mephistos as the main peril.

Possibly resulting in The Russos coming back for Secret Wars in 10 years time.

@GwenLantern - wow go read any book right now. Knull is the big bad and he does not answer to Mephisto. In fact I'm p re Getty sure Mephisto is "dead" after that last Avengers story.

@Makiveli21 - Yeah Knull is the clear and present danger for the current big event, but I'm talking about a major danger that they seem to be setting up.

And yes, Mephisto is "dead", but read Avengers #38. It ain't over. And it seems that ol' Fisto has been a much bigger bad this whole time, than we've previously given him credit for.

@knocturnalzen10 -

Yes and no. I 've been enjoying the new Black Widow run which hasn't had a new issue in like 2 months. The Thunderbolts King in Black tie-in was pretty fun. Some Future State DC stuff has been ok.

Been reading a lot more indie books or books not from the big two lately.

@TheBlueMorpho - I'm actually loving Future State. Especially Dark Detective and Wonder Woman (Yara Flor). And The Next Batman is essential reading too.

So wait, if Phoenix is his mommy and Jane Foster is Phoenix, then...

You gotta love Marvel's dedication to incest throughout the years.

@GwenLantern - Wait. Jane Foster is Phoenix?

@CorndogBurglar - Possibly. Strong fan theory. In the upcoming Avengers #44 The Phoenix Force will find a new host. Smart money's on Jane Foster.

@GwenLantern - it's not gonna be Jane its Maya Lopez. She's about to fight Namor its definitely her.

Yeah....Reason Number 567 of why I left collecting comics regularly. Crap like this.

Comics died when the concept of a cinematic universe was born. This is just embarrassing.

@rebellion - I don't understand the comparison to comics dying when the concept of a cinematic universe was born.

There are a few big problems with mainstream comics today.

1. They are too convoluted. And I don't even say that because of all the many decades of history. They are too convoluted because every writer wants to come on board and make drastic changes. Every time a new writer gets assigned a book they have to completely change a team up, so there's no consistency. Or make huge changes to a character's origin. Or shake up the status quo. There's just no long term consistency anymore.

2. Deaths not mattering a single bit.

3. Yearly events.

4. The price. Comics have gotten ridiculous. If you want to read everything that interests you every month its basically another car payment.

But comics and a cinematic universe can definitely coexist. Unless I'm missing what you mean, in that case, my bad lol.

@CorndogBurglar - I can't speak for rebellion, but all of those points you made are down to bad management.
For the last twenty years comics publishers and EICs have put the whims of writers before any kind of consistency or even continuity, citing the idea that creativity will be stifled if limitations are placed on it.
Personally I've often found the reverse to be true; That limitations inspire greater creative forces.

Kevin Feige does not do this. He has a strong, guiding hand. He knows when to let the creators run wild with ideas and when to step in and say "No, it can't be like that because we're doing this over here".

As such, what rebellion might mean is that the cinematic universe gives us something that we can invest in, whereas comics no longer can.

At least the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WB don't know what the hell they're doing, still to this day. Walter Hamada has only doubled down on the confusion and the "too much all at once" with his multiverse "plans".

@rebellion - so you're not reading what Donny Cates or Jonathan Hickman have been doing at Marvel recently? Wow you're missing out. Go read "Silver Surfer Black" and tell me again that comics aren't better than ever.
