VENOM Gets A New Creative Team (And Possibly An Updated Look) In Series Launching This November

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom run has reached its end, and Marvel Comics has now shared the title's next creative team along with what appears to be a new look for the iconic symbiote. Check it out!

Following Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's blockbuster Venom run, it's been revealed that Marvel Comics' resident master of horror, Al Ewing, and Ram V will take over the title. It's said that they plan to bring the same style and sensibilities that made Immortal Hulk such a hit, working together to lend a dramatic and dangerous air to this twisted new vision of Venom.

Rounding out this symbiote hivemind will be legendary artist Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), bringing his rich and detailed style to the Venomverse. He's been working at DC Comics in recent years, but a return to Marvel to tackle a fresh take on Venom feels like the biggest thing he's done in some time.

"When my editors reached out about taking on Venom alongside Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch, I was not prepared for the kind of creative thrill it has been ever since," Ram V says. "This story is going to expand and push the symbiote narrative and lore in even more unexpected and fantastic directions. It is also an utter thrill having the sort of call and response mechanic I’ve had with a writer like Al and an artist of Bryan’s caliber. Fans and new readers, strap in - you ain’t seen nothin’ yet."

A first look at what's in store will be revealed in the Spider-Man/Venom Free Comic Book Day special launching on August 14, with the new Venom series kicking off in November.

As you can see in the preview art below, it appears this Venom will have a slightly different look in this relaunch (however, a variant cover puts his classic appearance front and centre).

Maybe Cates can give some much needed love to Ghost Rider since that series got cancelled.

@soberchimera - There is meant to be an announcement from Cates this week about which title he is working on next.

Have you read his Thor run, that's pretty good as well.

@marvel72 - Cates can’t finish a story to save his life. He butchered Knull, Dylan Brock, Codex in one fell swoop. Dylan never got a dick hairs worth of character development, and now he has no
Future in the superhero department due to what happened to him. Black Winter is a fart in the wind. Cates is no James Tynion that much is obvious.

@McMurdo - Yeah I agree he f*cked up the ending of King In Black but I enjoyed the run for the most part.

@marvel72 - I think I started it, I also need to finish Aaron's run, I never even completed the Gorr storyline.

@soberchimera - Gorr was the best story of the Aaron run.I liked Jane Foster Thor to start with but by the time we got to War Of Realms I had enough of her.

@Razorface1 - My store sells new and used graphic novels (we stopped selling single issue comics a few years ago) and Manga, and as of late we've definitely sold more manga.

Signed someone who doesn't even care for Manga.

I mean Cates' Venom run was dominating Marvel Comics along with Immortal Hulk (made by Ewing).

So Ewing bringing more horror to Venom sounds like a win-win.

Also, there's Daredevil, who is TOP.

The entire Knull and King of Symbiotes thing was a disastrous take on the whole symbiotic story.
Why couldn't there just be a planet of symbiotes and done. The fact that they took the spider emblem from being a SPIDER-MAN reference and made it the species' look is a mess.
marvel72
marvel72 - 6/2/2021, 1:45 PM
@KindredMac - The emblem on the front of Knull is a dragon.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 6/2/2021, 3:27 PM
@KindredMac - the Knull story goes full stupidity by the end.
KindredMac
KindredMac - 6/3/2021, 8:46 AM
@marvel72 - Ya do realize that they designed the "dragon"based on the Spider Emblem right?
Retcons are only used for lazy writers to sell shit.
marvel72
marvel72 - 6/4/2021, 5:29 AM
@KindredMac - Yes but it's still a dragon on the front not a spider.

I loved Knull's origin as well.

Cates has done more for Venom over recent years than any previous writer.

@PicolasCage - Ewing is the Donny Cates who is more than hype and can tell an actual story.

If anyone can get the foul taste of Klyntar and Knull out of he collective mouths it's Ewing.

I get it is about sales, but I wish some villains were used like once every 3 years, Venom being one.

A villain that when they appear, you know it is going to be an epic showdown. They can still evolve and grow, but having them every month or having their own series just takes away so much in my opinion

@Knightrider - ahem, ahem....Joker
McMurdo
McMurdo - 6/2/2021, 3:30 PM
@CorndogBurglar - ya but Tynion’s Joker series is awesome Thus far and this is coming from someone who at first thought Bane’s daughter was a cheap/lazy move. I’m really diggin how Commissioner Gordon centric the Joker series is.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/2/2021, 4:55 PM
@McMurdo - Honestly, I don't mind solo series or mini-series like that. What bothers me is when Joker (or any villain in any comic) has to have some part to play in every single Batman story. For a while there it was like every story had to include him. Villains lose a lot of their impact and stop seeming quite so dangerous when that happens too often.

I'm kinda hoping for Let There Be Carnage to dive more into the lore too, but I think I'm just gonna have to make do with the comics
